March 14, 2014 Dear Families, The staff of Prairieview School believes that schools can only be successful when they help children grow academically, socially and emotionally. In order for this to happen, it is important that we establish a safe environment that allows students to grow. It is our goal to create an atmosphere for learning by setting clear expectations and directly teaching students about our expectations. We strive to have an atmosphere in our building that encourages positive behaviors and interactions. Our plan is based on Positive Behavior Intervention System (PBIS). The foundations of the approach emphasizes teaching students the behaviors we expect to see, reminding them to use those behaviors, acknowledging them when they do, and correcting them when they do not. We have a PBIS team which meets monthly to look at our behavior data and, when necessary, adjust our system so that it best meets the needs of our students. Our system has many components that you may already be familiar with: PALSP each month students learn about a different life skill and are encouraged to exhibit the behavior. PALS are given when a staff member in the building sees a student exhibiting the behavior. Every Friday, two students from each classroom are chosen to receive a PALS charm. Lifelong GuidelinesPschool pledge that teaches students the expectations of all Prairieview citizens. Procedure BannersP these are posted around the building to remind students of appropriate behaviors. PALing AroundP as a celebration of following behavior expectations, the students participate in a structured free time. School CelebrationsP times when we celebrate as a whole school for being positive citizens of our Prairieview community. Donated prizes are raffled off. Cool ToolsP lessons we use to teach and model expectations Attached you will find a Cool Tool that you can use at home as a family. This is another way to build a connection between home and school. More Cool Tools will be sent home through the school newsletter periodically throughout the year. We hope you find them to be helpful! • The PV PTO would l ike to invite you to our

    FREE Family Movie Night

    Where: PV Multi Purpose Room

When: Friday, Apri l 11th Door and Concession Stand @

    6:00

    Movie Starts @ 6:30 PM

Wear your pj’s and bring your blankets and pillows too! You are welcome to

bring your own snacks/dinner. Concessions will have baked goods, drinks,

and popcorn. Prices vary from $0.50 to a $1.00

The goal of our PTO Movie Night is to provide a fun, school-appropriate evening for our students and their families. We try and find the newest movies that will be most appealing to the majority of our students. For this event we have chosen Monsters University, which has a rating of G. It is our belief that parents are the best judge of the content of movies

they feel are appropriate for their family as it would be impossible for the PTO or staff to know the individual preferences, fears, or interests of each of the students. We hope you

will be able to join us, but understand if for any reason you choose not to attend. A complete review of the movie can be found at parentpreviews.com.

  • Home Cool Tool : Effort and Pride

The character traits for March are Effort and Pride. In March, third

and fourth grade participated in the statewide ISAT test and demonstrated great effort and pride on their hard work! Use some of the ideas below to introduce the concepts to your child, and help them

practice what it means to show effort and pride. Discuss the concepts of Effort and Pride with your chi ld . “Today we are going to talk about what it means to use our personal best and be proud of our work.” 1. Share with your child a time that something was difficult for you and what you did to overcome the difficulty. Encourage them to share something that was difficult for them that they had to work at to accomplish. 2. Discuss with your child what they perceive their strengths to be. Also, share with your child what you feel your strengths are. Brainstorm posit ive Effort and Pride characterist ics . How do you show your best effort :

    1. Don’t give up when things are hard 2. Try different ways to solve problems

How do you show you’re proud of yourself : 1. Say “Thank-You” when someone gives you a compliment 2. Take time to celebrate your achievements

Activit ies to practice and promote Effort and Pride: 1. Create a “compliment board” at home. Every time your child gives a compliment to someone or receives a compliment, add a sticker to the compliment board. 2. Display student-work at home and celebrate each other’s achievements. 3. Choose three household chores that everyone agrees on and promises to put more effort into at home.

  • YOU ARE NEEDED! Dear PV Parent, Does your child love Discovery Day? Bookfair? Movie Night? Field trips? Birthday Breakfast? These are just a few of the programs your Pairieview PTO provides. But we are in trouble. Because of a lack of volunteers (not a lack of funding!), we are considering dropping these programs for next year and scaling them down this year. Many hands make light work; so if we all give a little our children will gain A LOT! If you are interested in keeping these programs in place for your Pairieview students, we need YOUR help. Please contact Tina Coleman at tinaxcoleman@ yahoo.com or 847-641-0473 TODAY. SIGN UP NOW! Give this to your child’s teacher or leave it in the office. ______________ _______________ ________________ Your Name Your Phone Your Email
