3Tng Dy Lu, Gh n(Tautline, Bowline)ObjectiveLearn how to tie the Tautline Knot, Bowline Knot,
and understand their uses.
Fact Finding
Tautline KnotThe tautline knot is very useful for setting up tents,
flagpoles, and camp gates. A rope is wrapped around
a tent stake, which is hammer to the ground. Then
the tautline knot is tied on the remainder of the rope.
The result is a loop that will easily get bigger and
bigger. By sliding the knot toward the free end of the
rope, then loop gets bigger and tightens the pull on
the tent. Even with pressure, the loop will not get
smaller the tight pull between the tent and stake will
remain, keeping the tent upright.
1. wrap the rope around the anchor
2. Make a loop
3.Wrap the end of the rope around the standing part
4. Wrap the end around the standing part a second
time
5. Bring the end of the rope back toward the free
end, creating a second loop
6. Make a hitch, by placing the end of the rope
through the second loop.
7. Tighten the loops. Be careful to keep the knot
neat while doing this, and tighten it enough so that it
will grip the standing part reliably, but not so tightthat it can't easily slide.

The Bowline Knot
The bowline knot is a type of fixed knot. It creates a
loop with does slide or change its size under pressure.
It is especially useful in rescue situations because it
can make a loop around a person to lift him/her out of
a dangerous situation. Because the loop is fixed, thereis not worry about it strangling the person. Due to
this common used, the bowline knot is also referred
to as the rescue knot.
A good way to remember how to tie a bowline knot is
the rabbit comes out of his hole, around the tree, and
back down his hole
The finished knot
As an added security, a stopper knot (a simple
overhand knot would work) can be used with the
bowline knot to assure that it wont slip.
Lesson Presentation
Supplies:
Prepare enough pieces of rope for everyone.
Some tent stakes for the tautline knot.
Lesson:
Do a quick demonstration of each knot.
Give the students step-by-step instruction foreach knot.
Avoid showing the students all the knots at
once because this will confuse them.
The Activity:
Give each team a pole (about 10 feet), three tent
stakes and three long pieces of rope. Have the team
compete to see with team and can their pole standing
upright first. This is a good practice for the tautline
knot.Since the bowline knot is often used in rescue
situations, speed is key. Have the students compete
to see who can do it the fastest. Sometimes in rescue
situations, we may not have the use of both arms.
Have students practice tying the bowline knot around
themselves one-handed.
