Around Campus Cont…

Library News… The Magazine Subscription Reading Rally in the Li-brary begins on Wednesday, January 26th! It only runs for 3 days - through Friday, January 28th. Please look for a flyer and the booklet in your child’s folder. Magazine subscriptions can be purchased through the booklets or online at

http://www.gaschoolstore.com and enter the code: 559930.

The Library hosted 2 author visits this past week. Margie Palatini, picture book author, visited with the third graders via SKYPE! Sey-mour Simon, non-fiction author, visited with grades 3-5 and discussed his books on space and animal behavior. Both presentations were a HIT with the students! Be sure to check out the ESE website for a video from Mr. Simon’s presentation.

This week in the Library the students will be checking out and learning about how animals survive in the winter.

Finally, in honor of the Super Bowl, the Library’s 2nd Annual Super Bowl of Reading will begin on Monday, January 31st. Classes will pick a team and read their way across the foot-ball field toward their own end zone. The first class to cross the goal line, or whoever gets the closest, wins! Look for parent signature papers in folders soon.

SPANISH IMMERSION

Please come to an informational meeting for current Kindergarten students regarding the Spanish Immersion Program (SIP) in Humble ISD. SIP teaches Spanish through the content area classes beginning in grade 1. The first graders will have 90% of their day in Spanish, transitioning to 50% in fifth grade. Entrance criteria do apply for this program. Current Kindergarten students may register for the program beginning Tuesday, March 1st.

The informational meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 1st, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., at Pine Forest Elementary School, 19702 Lake Houston Parkway. Applications for the program will be available at this meeting. SIP begins in first grade at either BBE: Bear Branch Elementary (if students are from schools in the Kingwood attendance area) or PFE: Pine Forest Elementary (if students are in the Atascocita, Humble, Fall Creek or Summerwood attendance areas). Applications are due on Thursday, April 3rd by 4pm and must be turned in to either BBE or PFE, depending upon the area of attendance as de-scribed above. A Message from Mrs. Whigham…

I would like to express my sincere gratitude for the generous toy dona-tions that the ESE family made to Jordan’s Toy Drive in memory of my son, Austin, who passed away on Octo-ber 17, 2009 from Ewing’s Sarcoma. All of the toys were delivered to Texas Children’s Hospital, and the children with cancer who spent their holidays in the hospital were all happy recipients of those toys! The smiles on their faces as the toys were distributed will forever be a picture in my mind. Our ESE students and families made this all possible. You all are amazing!!

Patriot’s Day Thank You

Thank you to all our volunteers who helped make this year’s Patriot’s Day successful! I have received a lot of positive feedback from our students, who not only learned a great deal about Colonial life, but had fun while learning! At this time I would like to recognize the many people who were involved in making this event possible:

♦ Parents - for your time and effort in setting up and helping out in the various rotations.

♦ 5th grade teachers – Mrs. Drew, Mrs. Miller, Mr. Cannon, and Mr. Dufrene.

♦ Ms. Arceneaux and Mrs. Gower –for allowing us to use their classrooms.

♦ Ms. Smalley - for allowing us to use the library.

♦ Chef Mark and the cafeteria staff – for storing and cleaning needed items and for preparing our Patriot’s Day luncheon.

♦ Mrs. Maugans – for taking care of announcements in the Eagle Eye.

♦ Our photographers – Kathy Watts, Paul Braun and Carmelita Forero.

♦ Mr. Wharton – for graciously leading our Patriot’s Day parade, working with our 5th graders to prepare them for their singing performance, and for cafeteria set up.

♦ Larry and Betty Stevens, members of the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution – for their informative and entertaining presentation on daily Colonial life.

♦ Betty Peters and the Celtaire String Band – for their enjoyable and interactive performance on Colonial music.

♦ Julia Allison – for her educational demonstration on spinning and weaving.

♦ Panera Bread - for generously donating the pumpkin muffins used for the Tavern!

A BIG THANK YOU to the ESE PTO for appropriating the funds necessary for Patriot’s Day! It certainly made the task of organizing Patriot’s Day easier! Thank you to our Principal, April Maldonado and ESE’s Administrative staff for their help and support! Last, but not least, I want to express a sincere note of appreciation to the following people who were involved in planning and organizing from the very start: Debbie Doxey, Roxanne Brown, Debbie Braddy, Lori Venegas, Crystal Kirtikar, Courtney Richmond, and Mandy DeCola. I want to extend a special thanks to Theresa Drew who helped coordinate the 5th grade students’ and teachers’ involvement and to Denise Cobb for her invaluable in-sight and direction. We could not have done it without you! With Patriot’s Day behind us, we now have Manners Banquet to look forward to! Please mark your calendars for Friday, May 6th! Be on the lookout for flyers that will be sent home regarding Manners Banquet details in the near future.

Thank you again!

Sincerely,

Pele M. Tate
