Job 38:1-7,34-41
From out of a storm, the LORD said to Job: 2Why do you talk so much when you know so little?
Now get ready to face me! Can you answer the questions I ask?
4How did I lay the foundation for the earth? Were you there? 5Doubtless you know who decided its length and width. 6What supports the foundation? Who placed the cornerstone.
31
Job 38:1-7,34-4134Can you order the clouds to send a
downpour, or will lightning flash at your command? 36Did you teach birds to know that rain or floods are on their way? 37Can you count the clouds or pour out their water on the dry, lumpy soil? 39When lions are hungry, do you help them hunt? 40Do you send an animal into their den?
32
Job 38:1-7,34-4141And when starving young ravens cry
out to me for food, do you satisfy their hunger?
This is the Word of the Lord.C: Thanks be to God.

35
psalm 104:1-9,24,35c CEV
R: 5You built foundations for the earth, and it will never be shaken.
C:6You covered the earth with the ocean that rose above the mountains.
36
psalm 104:1-9,24,35c CEV

Second reading
The second reading is written in Chapter 5 of Hebrews beginning at verse 1.
Hebrews 5:1-10 CEV
Jesus our great high priest
40
Hebrews 5:1-10
Every high priest is appointed to help others by offering gifts and sacrifices to God because of their sins.
2A high priest has weaknesses of his own, and he feels sorry for foolish and sinful people. 3That is why he must offer sacrifices for his own sins and for the sins of others.
41
Hebrews 5:1-104But no one can have the honour of
being a high priest simply by wanting to be one. Only God can choose a priest, and God is the one who chose Aaron.
5That is how it was with Christ. He became a high priest, but not just because he wanted the honour of being one.
42
Hebrews 5:1-10
It was God who told him, "You are my Son, because today I have become your Father!"
6In another place, God says, "You are a priest forever just like Melchizedek.”
43
Hebrews 5:1-107God had the power to save Jesus from
death. And while Jesus was on earth, he begged God with loud crying and tears to save him. He truly worshiped God, and God listened to his prayers. 8Jesus is God's own Son, but still he had to suffer before he could learn what it really means to obey God.
44
Hebrews 5:1-109Suffering made Jesus perfect, and now
he can save forever all who obey him. 10This is because God chose him to be a high priest like Melchizedek.
This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.
GOSPEL
M: The Holy Gospel is Written in Chapter 10 of the Gospel according to St Mark beginning at Verse 35.
C: Glory to you O Lord.
Mark 10:35-45 CEV
The request of James and John
45
Mark 10:35-45 35James and John, the sons of
Zebedee, came up to Jesus and asked, "Teacher, will you do us a favour?"
36Jesus asked them what they wanted, 37and they answered, "When you come into your glory, please let one of us sit at your right side and the other at your left.”
46
Mark 10:35-45 38Jesus told them, "You don't really
know what you're asking! Are you able to drink from the cup that I must soon drink from or be baptized as I must be baptized?
39"Yes, we are!" James and John answered.
47
Mark 10:35-45
Then Jesus replied, "You certainly will drink from the cup from which I must drink. And you will be baptized just as I must! 40But it isn't for me to say who will sit at my right side and at my left. That is for God to decide.”
48
Mark 10:35-45 41When the ten other disciples heard
this, they were angry with James and John. 42But Jesus called the disciples together and said:
You know that those foreigners who call themselves kings like to order their people around. And their great leaders have full power over the people they rule.
49
Mark 10:35-45 43But don't act like them. If you want
to be great, you must be the servant of all the others. 44And if you want to be first, you must be everyone's slave. 45The Son of Man did not come to be a slave master, but a slave who will give his life to rescue many people.
This is the Gospel of the Lord,C: Praise to you O Christ. 50
Thank you, Lord Jesus, for giving up everything for us. Make us ready to serve others.
C: Amen.

Hymn
We sing :
How sweet the name of Jesus sounds
LH 161 CAL293
John Newton (1725-1807), alt
53
How sweet the name of Jesus sounds
1. How sweet the name of Jesus sounds
In a believer’s ear!
It soothes his sorrows, heals his wounds,
And drives away his fear.
54
How sweet the name of Jesus sounds
2. It makes the wounded spirit whole,
And calms the troubled breast;
It’s manna to the hungry soul,
And to the weary, rest.
55
How sweet the name of Jesus sounds
3. Dear name, the rock on which I build,
My shield and hiding-place;
My never-failing treasury, filled
With boundless stores of grace.
56
How sweet the name of Jesus sounds
4. By You my prayers acceptance gain,
Although with sin defiled;
Satan accuses me in vain,
And I am owned a child.
57
How sweet the name of Jesus sounds
5. Jesus, my shepherd, guardian, friend,
My prophet, priest, and king,
My Lord, my life, my way, my end,
Accept the praise I bring.
58
How sweet the name of Jesus sounds
6. Weak is the effort of my heart,
And cold my warmest thought;
But when I see You as You are,
I’ll praise You as I ought.
59
How sweet the name of Jesus sounds
7. Till then I would Your love proclaim
With every fleeting breath;
And may the music of Your name
Refresh my soul in death.

3. I will hold the Christ-light for you
in the night time of your fear.
I will hold my hand out to you,
speak the peace you long to hear.

Brother, let me be your servant
4. I will weep when you are weeping,
when you laugh I’ll laugh with you.
I will share your joy and sorrow
till we’ve seen this journey through.

Brother, let me be your servant
5. When we sing to God in heaven,
we shall find such harmony
born of all we’ve known together
of Christ’s love and agony.
67

Hymn
We sing :
Low, the way is low
LH 857 CAL293
Robin Mann 1949- (1980)
83
Low, the way is low
1. Low, the way is low,
with the man whom angels praise;
he who spoke the sky
was a baby dressed in hay:
84
Low, the way is low
We are companions of
the one whose name is love,
we share his life as we grow.
We carry Jesus’ death
with each and every breath -
our hope is high, the way is low.
85
Low, the way is low
2. See the glory road -
he was tempted by it too.
But he set his course
with Jerusalem in view:
86
Low, the way is low
We are companions of
the one whose name is love,
we share his life as we grow.
We carry Jesus’ death
with each and every breath -
our hope is high, the way is low.
87
Low, the way is low
3. When our time is gone
we will see the great new day.
Till that day appears,
all we know is Jesus’ way:
88
Low, the way is low
We are companions of
the one whose name is love,
we share his life as we grow.
We carry Jesus’ death
with each and every breath -
our hope is high, the way is low.
†
Go in peace, as the servants of our Lord.
Please stay a while
and have a cuppa
and chat with us.
