Soundscape and Name Projections

Two major First World War centenary projects have been made available for visitors to experience: the Roll of Honour Soundscape and the Roll of Honour Name Projections projects. The Soundscape will enhance the iconic Roll of Honour in the Memorial’s Commemorative Area with the voices of primary school students speaking the names and ages of the 62,000 servicemen and women who died during the First World War.

The Roll of Honour projections will see the names of each of the 62,000 Australians who gave their lives during the First World War projected onto the exterior of the Memorial’s Hall of Memory, immediately below the Dome. Names will be projected from sunset to sunrise between 2014 and November 2018.

For more information on these projects please visit www.awm.gov.au/1914-1918/centenary-projects

Here is their spirit, in the heart of the land they loved; and

here we guard the record which they themselves made.

“AUSTRALIA HAS GOT TO PLAY HER PART”: AUSTRALIA’S LATE PACIFIC CAMPAIGNS 1944–45Tuesday 2 December 12 pm BAE Systems Theatre, free

In 2007 the best-selling historian Sir Max Hastings alleged that Australian forces spent 1944 and 1945 “bludging” in “mopping-up” campaigns in the Pacific, the Australian army having effectively disappeared from the war. He could not have been further from the truth. In addition to the thousands of Australians (mainly airmen) fighting in the European war, Australian forces actively participated in the liberation of the Philippines and the Netherlands East Indies, as well as Australia’s own territory of New Guinea. Australian forces were more heavily engaged in the final year of the war than at any other time.

The year 1944 was one of frustration and disappointment for Australia. Faced with a manpower crisis, the government had to balance the country’s war effort

between the pressures of the domestic economy and the need to establish the infrastructure required to support the anticipated arrival of a sizeable British force, while still maintaining a military large enough to continue an active role in the war. Mid-year, the Australian prime minister and the army’s commander-in-chief travelled to Washington and London, in part to seek a greater role in the war for the Australian Imperial Force (AIF), the army’s all-volunteer expeditionary force. They were disappointed. At the end of the year, General Douglas MacArthur deliberately excluded the AIF from the Philippines, despite longstanding assurances to the contrary; instead, he allocated the AIF to a series of amphibious operations on Borneo in 1945, and ongoing campaigns in New Guinea and Bougainville. Dismissed as unnecessary mopping-up operations, each was, as one veteran commented, a “hard long bloody slog”. This talk will discuss Australia’s role in the final year of the war, challenging Hastings’s controversial assertions. Far from “bludging”, Australia suffered from the limitations of being a minor partner in a coalition war, with its army ultimately marginalised from the final battles to defeat Japan.

Dr Karl James is a Senior Historian in the Military History Section at the Australian War Memorial. His first book, The hard slog: Australians in the Bougainville campaign, 1944–45 (2012) was published by Cambridge University Press as part of the Australian Army History Series. Karl is also a Departmental Visitor with the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre in the School of International, Political and Strategic Studies at the Australian National University.

COPING WITH CAPTIVITY: AUSTRALIAN PRISONERS OF THE TURKS DURING THE FIRST WORLD WARMonday 12 January12 pmBAE Systems Theatre, free

Almost 200 Australians became prisoners of the Turks during the First World War. These men from the infantry, light horse, camel corps, the navy, and the flying corps were captured during the Gallipoli campaign, across the Sinai–Palestine front, and in Mesopotamia. At the time of the Armistice in November 1918, 54 Australians lay in graves scattered across Turkey. The capture and imprisonment of Australian servicemen at the hands of such a radically different enemy was an unprecedented issue that generated specific challenges not only for the prisoners themselves but also for military and government

18 19

authorities, for patriotic and charitable organisations, and for the prisoners’ families. This presentation offers an overview of the experience of captivity in Turkey and explores how Australians intimately affected by imprisonment, as well as those it concerned more broadly, responded to this unique wartime reality.

Dr Kate Ariotti recently completed her PhD at the University of Queensland. Kate has several forthcoming publications drawn from her research into the prisoners of the Turks, and worked as a lecturer and tutor before joining the Military History Section in August 2014.

20Film screening series

LA GRANDE ILLUSION (1937) GDirector: Jean Renoir (114 minutes)Sunday 11 JanuaryBAE Systems Theatre, free

Renoir’s anti-war masterpiece tells the story of two French pilots, one an aristocrat and the other working class, who are shot down during the First World War and taken prisoner by the Germans. The story that follows weaves a narrative that is poignant, funny, and deeply affecting. The film offers an unsentimental vision of our common humanity and had a profound influence on all the prisoner-of-war films that followed.

THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI (1957) PGDirector: David Lean (161 minutes)Sunday 18 JanuaryBAE Systems Theatre, free

During the Second World War a group of British prisoners of the Japanese in Burma were forced to construct a railway bridge as part of a massive effort to build the Burma–Thailand Railway. Lean’s classic film explores themes of madness, duty, and pride, played out by larger-than-life characters and with impeccable cinematography. Controversial for its largely fictional portrayal of a true event, this tense war epic is best viewed today as a parable on the fallacies of human beings and the brutality – and inhumanity – of war.

THE COLDITZ STORY (1955) GDirector: Guy Hamilton (94 minutes)Sunday 25 JanuaryBAE Systems Theatre, free

No prisoner-of-war series would be complete without an adaptation of P.R. Reid’s memoir of his time in Colditz castle during the Second World War. This film is brimming with old fashioned patriotism and the British stiff upper lip, playing out at a cracking pace with infectious and charming performances from the cast. Never afraid to wear its heart on its sleeve, this is a Boys’ own adventure that is worth experiencing on the big screen.

“PUT A FENCE IN FRONT OF THESE MEN … AND THEY’LL CLIMB IT!”The summer holidays are upon us again and with them comes the annual Australian War Memorial Sunday film screenings. RESCUE DAWN (2006) MADirector: Werner Herzog (126 minutes)Sunday 1 FebruaryBAE Systems Theatre, free

Completely different in tone from the rest of our series, this grizzly and authentic adaptation of Dieter Dengler’s escape from a Viet Cong prisoner-of-war camp is enthralling viewing. Drawing on Herzog’s own 1997 documentary on Dengler, this film is an unrelenting window into the prisoner-of-war experience that does not let up. Anchored by Christian Bale’s passionate performance, it is not for the faint hearted.

THE GREAT ESCAPE (1963) PGDirector: John Sturges (172 minutes)Sunday 8 FebruaryBAE Systems Theatre, free

We finish our series with another iconic film of the genre, the score to which is almost as memorable as the story it tells. Based on Paul Brickhill’s true account of a mass escape from the “escape-proof” Stalag Luft III prison camp, Sturges’ film is a classic from beginning to end. With its star-studded cast, meticulous attention to detail, and thrilling final action sequence, the chance to revisit this film is not to be missed.
