I had another topic scheduled for this month, but several client situations raised the issue I am about to review, so I thought it a good time to discuss expert estate planning. I know, I know, not the most exciting or happy topic. However, just this month I had numerous clients come to me to probate estates and am now watching the families suffer with confusion and tax liability that could have been avoided. So, I think it’s time we had a little discussion.

Most people know they need a will (although most do not have one…which is an entirely different discussion) and those who have a will typically retain an attorney to draft one. However, although any attorney can draft a will, most attorneys do not know or understand the probate law, the Medicaid rules and the tax code.

As you know, an “estate” is the property owned by the decedent at the time of his or her death. In the state of New Jersey, estates are potentially liable for three types of taxes: (1) Estate Tax; (2) Inheritance Tax and (3) Income Tax.

The Estate Tax is charged by both the Federal and State governments against the value of the estate. In New Jersey, if the value is over $675,000, the estate will owe Estate Tax. This is VERY easy to reach as most homes in the state are $300,000 or more. This can also be VERY easily avoided.

Planning for Powerby Christy Schmidt, Esq.

The Inheritance Tax is a charge against assets passed to “distant” relations (lawyers say “degree of sanguinity.”) While no Inheritance Tax will be due to assets passed to a spouse or children, assets passed to siblings, cousins, nieces and nephews, friends, et cetera, will incur an Inheritance Tax liability. This, too, can also be VERY easily avoided (typically using “gifting”).

Estate Income Tax is incurred against the assets that ap-preciate or other income earned while the estate is being resolved (sales of appreciated stock or property, interest earned, income from outstanding contracts…). This can be minimized or avoided with careful probate management.

This month, as I stated, several clients came to me to probate family members’ wills. Each of the estates had wills – which is a great start. However, all but one were prepared by local attorneys who, although experts in their fields, had no idea how to properly plan an estate. The result:1. The first estate will owe over $60,000 in Estate Tax;2. The second will owe over $125,000 in Inheritance Tax;3. The third will was missing necessary provisions to properly probate the estate;4. The fourth had a poorly drafted “codicil” (amendment) which actually resulted in one granddaughter being left nothing;5. The fifth is passing significant assets to a family member on disability. He will now lose his disability eligibility.

Each of these families is stressed and upset their deceased loved one did not get a properly prepared estate plan. Not only that, but also the decedents’ intentions to pass assets to family members is being diluted though taxes, costs and fees. What a shame and what a waste. Why should the government get MORE of your money???? The post-death costs are significant when an estate plan is typically a few thousand dollars or less!

Notice I keep saying “expert estate planning attorney?” Yeah…let’s talk about estate number six. That estate has no tax liability at all. Zero. The assets are going to exactly who the decedent intended. Probate and closing the estate is easy and painless – and the family is thrilled all the assets are preserved.

A column that simplifies areas of the legal industry for every day consumption. This month’s topic...

Cell Phone Use While Driving by Christopher J. Grenda, Esq.

New Jersey identifies “driver inattention” as the leading contributor to fatalities in motor vehicle accidents. In 2013, driver inattention was the cause for 164 motor vehicle accidents involving deaths. According to the New Jersey State Police fatality statistics, distracted driving has been the leading cause of motor vehicle deaths since 2008. In 2013, New Jersey recorded 508 accidents resulting in 542 fatalities.

New Jersey’s cell phone law is provided for in the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Act under N.J.S.A. 39:4-97.3 “Use of Hands-Free Wireless Telephone in Moving Vehicle.” Cell phone laws in New Jersey are constantly changing. In 2004, New Jersey became only the second state in the nation to make it illegal to operate a motor vehicle while using a cell phone. In 2008, the New Jersey cell phone law was amended from a secondary offense to a primary offense; meaning, that police officers may stop and ticket a driver solely for using their cell phone while driving. Law enforcement no longer needs to establish an independent reason for conducting a motor vehicle stop.

The current law, enacted on July 1, 2014, increased the penalties dramatically. The new law provides for the toughest hands-free cell phone law in the nation. The current penalties are as follows: First Offense – a fine between $200 and $400; Second Offense – a fine between $400 and $600; Third or Subsequent Offense – a find between $600 and $800, three motor-vehicle points, and the court may impose a 90-day period of driver’s license suspension.

There are a number of exceptions provided for in the statute where a person may use their cell phone while operating a motor vehicle: (1) the operator has reason to fear for his [or her] life or safety, or believes that a criminal act may be perpetrated against himself [or herself] or another person; (2) the operator is using the [cell phone] to report to appropriate authorities a fire, a traffic accident, a serious road hazard or medical or hazardous materials emergency, or to report the operator of another motor vehicle who is driving in a reckless, careless or otherwise unsafe manner or who appears to be driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. N.J.S.A. 39:4-97.3(b)(1), (2).

With all this said, what is permissible? The leading case in New Jersey, State v. Malone, provides that although a driver may not press buttons to “text”, a river may press buttons on their cell phone if they are “initiating, activating, or deactivating a function of the phone”. Here are some suggestions for cell phone use in a motor vehicle: (1) abstinence; (2) speaker phone while the phone is not being held in your hand; (3) a Bluetooth device; (4) a wired headset; (5) or, installation of a “cell phone car kit”. This is not an exhaustive list nor legal advice on how to circumvent the statute. These suggestions are merely opinion based options.

When facing a traffic offense where motor vehicle points or a loss of driving privileges is at stake, it is advisable to obtain competent legal representation.

If you want to stay thinner, or lose some WEIGHT, you have to Plan Your Meals

It’s said that failing to plan, means that you’re planning to fail. When it comes to meals designed to promote your health and eliminate unwanted calories, you’re going to have to heed this advice.

The problem is, if you fail to plan your meals you are basically eating according to either your emotions or whatever whim may come over you around mealtime.

Both of these can mean added cal-ories, poor nutritional choices and a growing waistline.

I do advise some general principles to follow when planning your meals, but the takeaway message to this nutritional no-no is you need to think independently of your shifting moods about what you will be consuming for up to the next week in advance -- in order to keep your plate free of unnecessary calories.

This means shopping in advance with specific meals in mind and it means putting your intended meals down on paper and sticking to your meal schedule.

You’ve probably discovered that both of these things are much harder in practice than they are in theory. There’s a reason for that.

Processed food manufacturers are spending a lot of money, billions and billions of dollars each year, to convince you that their food will satisfy you emotionally. Processed foods are not the answer. Processed foods are part of your growing waistline problem.

Remember this truth as you take on the billion dollar advertising industry while you take control of your health! Plan your meals, and you’ll stay thinner. Oh and one more thing. Make sure you eat at least ONE SALAD per day. It’s good for you and you’ll be able to keep your weight in check if you’re overweight and trying to lose weight.

Thankfulness Every Dayby Christy Schmidt

Staying Home

I am thankful for...

Since this has been an incredible year and I have so much for which to be thankful, I thought it would be a good time to share my “gratitude and thankfulness practice” with all of you!

Let’s start by understanding the science and truth of how we think. Our brains are programmed to notice the bad things. We cannot help it. Our early ancestors kept alive by being supersensitive to shadows and sounds in the undergrowth and darkness. We are the descendants of those supersensitive people – so our brains (amygdala, to be exact) are programmed to be constantly aware of the bad things.

Brene Brown talks about this foreboding as “dress rehearsing for tragedy.” We worry and surmise and are constantly on the lookout for what could harm us. Your kid is late from school or your spouse is late from work – and you picture the car accident and play out the hospital and maybe even the funeral in your mind. We all do it. And it hurts us.

The way our news is presented and consumed is a constant reminder of what we want to think about: The news never reports good things – only the things that are bad, odd, dangerous. Even the weather report becomes fearful: “Well, Bruce, it looks like it is really raining. Look at these puddles. Dangerous driving conditions. Possible flooding. OH GOD!!!”

It’s just rain, but it is the story that keeps us comfortable. “I feel more secure because I am aware of all the bad things that can happen today, tomorrow, next week, next month….” We feel empowered by being “ready.”

The problem is we are no longer foraging and hunting for food in the dark – and we do not need to function on with a fight – flight – freeze mentality. We have evolved to have these amazing frontal lobes in our brains that are capable of higher-level analysis. (Which we could use when driving in traffic…think Route 35 and Ocean Avenue in July…).

The trick is to activate that higher-level thinking – to actually reprogram our brains to think positively. Being thankful is the most powerful and instantaneous way to get into a more positive state. The most interesting fact (from the Frederickson studies) is that the more grateful and positive we are, the more opportunity we see. We actually become more aware!

LIFE CAN BE ALL YOU WANT IT TO BE!

291 Herbertsville Rd, Brick 08724

So how do we reprogram our brains so the more evolved brain takes over? We practice thankfulness. As a practice, I spend a few minutes each night recording my list of things for which I am thankful in my “Thankfulness Journal.” Not only does this give me a big smile as I settle down to sleep, but also it sets me up for great dreams and a great morning. This is the way to set the tone for your life. By doing this for two weeks, positive psychological research shows participants actually alter their mood and outlook – and it only takes 14 days!

For example, last night I wrote: “Today, I am thankful for my beautiful, little nephew – and being able to teach him and enjoy watching him grow up. For my clients and that I have the education and skill to help them. For my teachers and mentors that helped me help others. My incredible sons who took care of the dog today so I could work. My Mom who made me soup. My boyfriend who fixed my chair. For the fall and the gorgeous colors and cool breeze. For this pumpkin- spice tea I found at the store. My favorite yoga pants and big sweaters…” and so on.

So, this month you each have two assignments.

First, when you sit down with loved ones to your Thanksgiving feast, do not just “dig in.” Most of us, perhaps, give thanks prior to eating – but this year, I want you to take several minutes and go around the table, asking each person to talk about for what he or she is thankful. We started this practice in our family and it is a beautiful time with lots of smiles and hugs. We eat more slowly – and really enjoy each other’s company. So, give that a try (even if you are the only one brave enough to do it!)

Then, go to the Ansuz, LLC Facebook page (here: www.facebook.com/AnsuzLLC) and talk about what for your guests were thankful. You can also go to the page and list for what you are thankful. I will get us started. This is a way – as a community – for us to celebrate.

How wonderful! How did this positive result happen??? I prepared the estate plan. Yours truly. An expert estate planning attorney can make probate easy and minimize or eliminate any tax liability. An expert estate planning attorney can ensure the “estate” shifts assets prior to death – so they are not “owned” by the decedent. An expert estate planning attorney can plan for Medicaid issues, Special Needs Trusts (for those on disability), education costs, keeping the family vacation home. Easily. So, here is your end-of-2015 assignment:1. Decide to have your estate plan prepared by a qualified,

expert estate planning attorney.2. Contact only a qualified, expert estate planning attorney

(not the guy who got you out of a traffic ticket or the girl who helped close your house – unless they are estate planning experts). You want an easy way to determine if that attorney is an expert? Ask him or her: What are the methods to avoid my grandson losing his disability payments if he inher-its? Or: I own a home valued at $800,000 – what will be my Estate Tax Liability? If he or she hesitates, ask for a referral (or just call me already! Jeeze.)

3. Obtain an estate analysis and have the qualified attorney prepare your estate plan and estate documents. This can include: A last will and testament, a power of attorney, a living will and health care proxy, trusts and insurance or retirement account planning.

Of course, I would appreciate if you called me. I am even offering a special for the next few months. You can also ask your accountant who he or she recommends. Just do it.

A few years back I had the chance to see the Matt O’ Ree Band play at an invite only party for one of my previous radio companies. They were a blues/rock band. I’m a complete metal head. Crank the distortion, and I’m there for ya. That being said, I was drawn to, and completely blown away by the guitarist. It was Matt O’Ree. Since then, I have seen the guitar master probably 10 more times over the years. Fast forward to today, he is the new guitarist for Jon Bon Jovi. If you have seen his band, even just one time, you know that he is easily a fit for any touring rock band. This guy channels all the great ones, all at once. He studies it. He teaches it. He knows it. He is it.

So, a couple weeks back I had a chance to talk to Matt O’Ree fresh off his tour in Indonesia as the new guitar player for Bon Jovi. And here’s what he had to say:

So, how surreal is it? Matt-“It’s a dream come true. I mean, after watching movies as a kid, like “The Song Remains the Same” and seeing all the pictures of Led Zeppelin in front of those huge crowds back in the day. If nothing else ever happens in my career, I’m good! God bless Jon for giving me this opportunity.”

What is “down time” like on the road in Jakarta? “You get to see a part of the world and you can take in all for yourself…not how our media or other people portray it. It was wonderful.”

When did you know you wanted to be in the music business?“I knew when I was 13. I played a middle school dance. I knew right then, I knew in my heart, this is the only thing I ever want to do.”

An Interview with New Bon Jovi Guitarist, Matt O’Reeby Steve DeJacimo

Was the Jon Bon Jovi opportunity a build up, or a surprise?“Oh, a huge surprise. I had no idea. It was last minute. But, I was working with a lot of musicians over the last four years as I was writing my new album, and the connections were there, and then one day it just all came together.”

Do you need a roadie? I can tune guitars and carry stuff.“They (Bon Jovi) have their own crew. Everything is covered. I was slowly building a guitar rig (an amp, pedals, effects, etc.) that would fit in the Pony (The Stone Pony in Asbury Park). All this time I was trying to get the best tone for my guitar sound, and lo and behold, it all ends up in Jakarta. The crew said it looked fine and it was ready just to connect and use in the first show. Who would have thought that the first run of it would have been in Indonesia?”

So, what’s next for the Matt O’Ree Band?“There’s going to be a new record in January of 2016. There will be a bunch of guest star players. I am also looking for new musicians. Bobby gave me 13 years and I am grateful for that. But, there will be major reformation, with Eric Saska staying on as the mad scientist on the keyboards.” About the author:Before getting into the magazine business, Steve De Jacimo, an Akron, Ohio native, had a twenty year stint in radio and television ad sales. In Ohio, he worked for WMMS 100.7 in Cleveland, and WNIR in Akron. In New Jersey, he worked for

95.9 The Rat in Belmar, and 105.7 The Hawk in Bayville. During those years, he also managed two rock bands, Someday Never and Peace Tree.

Nearly any event at the Beach is more highly anticipated than the productions put on by the Point Beach Players. Twice a year, student actors, crewmembers, and directors come together to put on a spectacular perfomance for parents, peers, and drama enthusiasts alike. While the spring musical occurs on a larger scale, the fall play is not to be oåverlooked. This year, the drama club performed A Mad Breakfast, written by Isabel McReynolds Gray. Written in 1929, it is often heralded as one of the funniest one-act plays ever written, and judging by the laughter from the audience during the Beach performance, its appeal has not diminished through time.

The play opens as a small boarding house prepares for breakfast, just like any other day—however, one mischie-vous boarder named Mr. Jones decides to take it into his own hands to spice up the daily life of his housemates. Mr. Jones, along with his friend and accomplice, Miss Brown, arrange for a wealthy researcher to come visit their boarding house “for the purpose of observation

A Mad Breakfastby Emily Foster

and study.” But there’s a catch: the researcher, a timid man named Mr. Long, thinks that he is visiting a mental institution rather than a boarding house.

Throughout the play, a frightened Mr. Long interacts with each of the seven other eccentric boarders as Mr. Jones and Miss Brown watch their prank play out even better than they expected. With the entrance of each new character to the stage, the play grew in intensity and humor, culminating in a séance like no other, driving Mr. Long to flee the house with a love-struck serving girl on his heels.

Practice for the play began early in September, and for two hours, three days a week, the drama club worked their hardest to make the fall play unforgettable. Their efforts truly paid off; from the opening lines to curtain call, the Beach players had the audience in stitches with their rendition of A Mad Breakfast. It isn’t over yet, though. Keep an eye out for the spring musical, the auditions for which are starting up within the next few months!

Each Fall, during a month-long period beginning in early September, brewers from around the world travel to the Pacific Northwest to select their hops for the next years’ brews. In 2015, 97% of all hops cultivated in North America came from this region, with nearly three-quarters of our domestic yield being grown in the Yakima Valley of Washington. One could only imagine the amazing aroma rising from the lush hop bines during this harvest period.

Most commonly, hop cones are removed from the bines, cleaned, and transported directly to a kiln where they are dried, cooled and compressed into 200 pound bales. According to Joshua M. Bernstein, in his book Brewed Awakening, the urgency to dry hops is to prevent spoilage. “That’s because hops are like fresh-cut grass,” Bernstein says. “Initially, the smell is superb, but it quickly goes rotten.”

In 1993 Steve Dresler, the head brewer at Sierra Nevada Brewing Company in Chico, CA, had the idea to produce a commercial beer using “wet hops” – hops picked, delivered and immediately placed into a brew kettle while fresh. The resulting beer – the Northern Hemisphere Harvest Ale – produced intense herbal flavors aromas and became the trail-blazer in a now burgeoning wet-hop ale seasonal market.

Unlike Sierra Nevada, though, most of the nation’s 3000 breweries don’t have the Pacific Northwest in their backyard. For breweries like Brooklyn’s Sixpoint, sourcing hops for Sensi, a wet-hop ale brewed with fresh Amarillo and Cascade, can be a logistical nightmare. “Right after harvest, we rush-deliver sacks of seedless hop cones – hand-selected to be the most lush, the most floral, the most fragrant flowers – and put these ‘wet hops’ directly into this brew.”

Lagunitas Brewery in Petaluma, CA, takes their seasonal wet-hopped offering to the next level by bottling and shipping on the same day. “Our farmer friends in Yakima, WA harvested and rushed straight-to-our-breweries the freshest virgin, un-kilned hops. Then a herculean effort involving Lagunitas folks from across all different depart-ments commenced with a quickness…sorting and picking through the hops to remove twigs, twine and other stuff from farming.” The resulting beer, appropriately named Born Yesterday, is an earthy and floral burst of Mosaic, Amarillo, and Equinox.

If you’re reading this column and you’ve never tried a “wet-hop” beer, head out to any of our Point Pleasant craft beer purveyors and pick up a Sierra Nevada Harvest Ale, Sixpoint Sensi, or Lagunitas Born Yesterday. You won’t regret it.

Oatmeal Cranberry Nut Cookies(makes about 5 dozen)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix dry ingredients. Stir in remaining ingredients. Place teaspoon full on unbuttered cookie sheet and bake until edges are golden brown about 10 to 12 minutes. Optional: drizzle with simple orange juice glaze.

Cinnamon Roll Cookies(makes about 3 dozen)

3 cups all purpose flour ½ tsp. baking soda¼ tsp. baking powder ½ cup butter½ cup light brown sugar 1 tsp. vanilla extract2 tsp. cinnamon 1 large egg½ cup light corn syrup

Filling: Mix together ¼ cup softened butter, ½ cup brown sugar, 3 tsp. cinnamon, ½ tsp. vanilla extractIn a large bowl beat together softened butter, sugar and egg until fluffy. Add baking soda, baking powder and vanilla. Mix in corn syrup. Add sifted flour 1 cup at a time until well blended.Divide dough into 2 and wrap in plastic wrap and chill for 1 hour. Allow chilled dough to soften for 10 minutes at room temperature, then roll onto floured wax paper into a rectangle approximately 6”x15”. Spread half of the filling on each piece and use wax paper to roll into tight pinwheels. Chill dough again for at least 1 hour before cutting. Place cut slices about ½” thick and place on cookie sheet. Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 10 to11 minutes. When cool drizzle with a confectioners sugar glaze.

The long Thanksgiving weekend is a great time to get a head start on Christmas baking. I don’t actually bake the cookies but I do start making my dough and freezing it. The pretzel bark will keep in a sealed container for about a week. Whenever we have a party or event, I have a beautiful variety of cookies that can be cut and baked in a matter of minutes. These are some of my most requested. Happy baking to all!

Students of 08742OceanFirst Model Classroom Grant Awarded to Point Pleasant Borough High

(Continued on page 26)

Area schools looking to transform their business education classroom facilities into state-of-the-art, innovative Technology- Learning Labs, complete with the latest technology and curriculum tools to support active learning, need look no further than Point Pleasant Borough High School’s Room 201. The classroom was the site of a recent makeover made possi-ble by a $10,000 grant from the OceanFirst Foundation, funded through the organization’s 2014 Model Classroom Grant Program.

Point Pleasant Borough High School was one of just 15 schools, selected from a pool of over 80 applicants to receive the grant that, according to the OceanFirst Foundation, was developed to provide funding to support innovative schools that have the vision, creativity and desire to develop model classrooms for learning. The grant supports schools that are committed to creating and promoting a culture of academic excellence and to improving and enhancing classroom instruction and that embrace new technology, tools and training that add value to the learning experience and improve student achievement. In other words, the grant supports projects that perfectly align with the goals specified in Point Pleasant Borough High School Business Education Teacher Dave Johnson’s grant proposal, Classroom for Integrated Business Studies.

In his proposal, Mr. Johnson outlined an ambitious plan for updating classroom 201, transforming it into an integrated business studies center able to accommodate expanded educational opportunities in the areas of accounting, economics, and personal finance. He not only established plans to improve the quality of instruction with new resources but also set the quantitative goals of doubling the number of students in the AP Economics class in three years and having 25 students annually complete an embedded Advance Accounting class to earn college credits.

“The appeal of gaining college credit through an AP class or through the embedded college classes offered in our school is increasing,” Johnson wrote in his grant proposal. “As post- secondary education costs continue to rise, AP classes and embedded programs allow these students to save on the cost of their college education.“

To accomplish his goals, Mr. Johnson sought funding to purchase, new Accounting textbooks with a six-year license to access supplemental digital learning materials; QuickBooks accounting software; licenses for two virtual simulation programs in personal finance and management; a quantity of low gloss dry erase whiteboards, which have been hung in a 360 degree config-uration around the classroom, giving the students the opportunity to work collaboratively while providing Mr. Johnson continuous visual oversight; a new LCD projector; and a ThinkPad all-in-one wireless tablet.

“The introduction of these new technologies, allow for a more student-centered learning environment, which promotes in-creased engagement and active learning among our students,” he wrote.

Mr. Johnson unveiled the updated classroom at a ribbon cutting ceremony held on Oct. 2.

OceanFirst Foundation Executive Director Kathy Durante, OceanFirst Bank Senior Vice President Nina Anuario and Assistant Vice President Frank Scarpone joined Superintendent of Point Pleasant Borough Schools Vincent S. Smith, School Business Administrator Steve Corso, Point Pleasant Borough High School Principal Kurt Karcich and members of the Point Pleasant Borough Board of Education for a classroom tour and authentic demonstration of the new equipment by the students in Mr. Johnson’s AP Micro Economics class.

As the students demonstrated their knowledge of comparative advantage, working on the new whiteboards around the classroom, Mr. Johnson explained to the audience the updates afforded by the grant funds.

“The new tools have already enhanced classroom instruction,” Mr. Johnson said. “The new technologies, which integrate with the Google Chromebooks we use in the classroom, promote increased student engagement and interaction, while facilitating assessment with instant oversight into students’ comprehension. Working online with the Chromebooks or with the online working papers not only increases efficiency but it also allows me to better monitor students’ progress and provide them immediate feedback. This is tremendously beneficial because if a student is struggling with a certain concept, I can adjust instruction accordingly.”

A point Principal Karcich was quick to champion, saying, “That kind of instant feedback facilitates the most effective individualized instruction, which is so valuable to both teachers and students.”

OceanFirst’s Frank Scarpone commended Mr. Johnson, he said, “What I love about this project is that it provides students with real life training.”

Scarpone reminisced about his time spent as a student at Point Pleasant Borough High School, and how, at the time, he lamented having to take typing class.

“Although I didn’t realize it at the time, typing was one of the most valuable courses I took in high school,” he said. “It’s a skill I use and will continue to use everyday. These classes bear that same practi-cality; you’re learning how to apply for a mortgage, how to balance checkbook, personal finance – valuable skills that you need and will use your entire adult life.”

The OceanFirst Foundation’s Kathy Durante acknowledged competitive nature of grant, saying, “ Each application received for the Model Classroom Grant underwent a rigorous review process.”

“We received over 80 applicants of which only 15 were selected and only five were high school proposals,” she said. “What really stood out about Mr. Johnson’s application was that it reflected a blend of financial life skills with accounting and economics, which have critical real world applications, plus it interacted with OceanFirst’s worlds of banking and finance. It’s a difficult process and I congratulate you on your success.”

Before leaving, Mr. Johnson had each guest sign the classroom oar, a metaphor for perseverance.

“Anchors weigh you down,” he said gesturing to a boat anchor, with a red ‘prohibition sign’ across it, situated in the corner. “The oar propels

Parental GuidanceGiving ThanksBy Maureen Whelan

“Dank u”, “Mahalo”, “Shukran”, “Merci”, “Gracias”, and “Thank You”, this phrase can be found in every language in the world. November is a time most Americans are reminded to be thankful, but what about the rest of the year? Scientists are studying the benefits of practicing this act daily. Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, have found that there are numerous health benefits associated with the expression of gratitude. These include stronger immune systems, higher levels of positive emotions, more optimism and happiness, acting with more generosity and compassion, and decreased feelings of loneliness and isolation. The business world is taking notice as well. Forbes published a recent study by Bersin and Associates. This study found companies that “excel at employee recognition” were twelve times more likely to have strong business results. So, there are plenty of reasons to develop an attitude of gratitude.

Remember that iconic Norman Rockwell Saturday Evening Post cover photo? The one with generations of a family gathered around the table as the matriarch presents the turkey? It’s called “Freedom from Want”. Granted it was a simpler time, but that generation worked hard for all that they had. Education was a gift not a prerogative, and TV was a luxury. Those luxuries are now considered basic necessities, and this has bred an attitude of entitlement. We live in a different world, but we have sacrificed some good to get here. It’s a bit more difficult living here in the heart of New Jersey’s wealth belt. Route 35 looks more like a luxury car parade than a throughway some days. But the only way to truly cultivate that “freedom from want” is to take notice of all that we already have.

As parents, we often prompt our young children to use their manners. Perhaps this simple act of saying “thank you” helps them to experience the happiness so many adults are envious of. Somewhere along the way we have forgotten to be thankful for the small things in our lives. Even if we voice these needs in jest, by creating a belief of “needing that…. cellphone, pair of

boots, videogame, etc.”, we have decreased the value of these pleasures in life. Resentment then builds when

these gifts are threatened or taken away. We see this at times, in our tween and teen children; good kids,

who have developed a sense of entitlement during an already egocentric phase. Likely this is a

learned behavior, learned from us, their parents. We just need to be thankful for all the good

things we have in our lives. And simply, saying “thank you” on a regular basis is

a start.

Early settlers of this county were aware of this, and took the time to show their gratitude even when they still had so little. 45 of the 102 passengers on the Mayflower died that first winter of 1620-1621. Many were still struggling to survive on a daily basis, yet they were thankful. Fast forward to today. Most of us have a roof over our heads, food in fridge, books on the shelves and money in the bank. Just over 6% of the worlds population has a college degree. Almost 2 billion people are illiterate. So, if you are reading this, then you have plenty to be thankful for.

“ Happy Thanksgiving

to all my readers!Thank you to

my family, friends, and faith.

Each brings incredible peace, happiness and

strength to my life. ”

I’m not going to sit here and preach at you all to remember what you’re thankful for this month. You’re going to get enough of that as it is. However, Thanksgivingbeing just around the corner does raise an important subject: gratitude.

How many of you ladies feel like you never get any of this? You spend so much time working, cooking, cleaning, taking care of your husband, your kid… You work yourself until you’re afraid to sit down because you honestly aren’t sure if you’ll be able to stand up again. And for what? More messes. More chaos. It never ends.

If you’re like me, if, while you’re in the middle of trying to do thirty things at once, you catch a glimpse of someone else sitting around watching TV, your blood turns to lava. Why should they get to sit there and relax while you’re scrubbing the stove clean after sweating next to it for an hour?

It’s hard. You have a lot of work to do every single day. And you very often don’t get any help.

But if someone were to offer – would you let them?

Last Thanksgiving, I spent all day in the kitchen. My boyfriend and I hosted at our house, and I insisted on making not only the turkey, but the mashed potatoes, and the sweet potatoes, and the vegetables, and a dessert. This was after spending the entire night before making sure the house was as clean as it can be with five animals. I worked myself into such a frenzy that I wound up going and lying down instead of sitting with the family.

The thing is, it didn’t have to be that way. Every member of my boyfriend’s family asked what they could bring. I could have let them mash some potatoes, or bake a pie. I could have left the dishes in the sink and let my boyfriend move them to the dishwasher. But for some reason, I felt like I had to do it all.

Sound familiar? Do you take on more than you need to? Are you stressing yourself out more than necessary? Does anyone offer to help you, but your pride won’t let you accept it? Or, if they don’t offer (I said my boyfriend’s family offered, not my own), have you tried asking?

Let Themby Katherine Kehoe

you forward. Having the oar in class is a symbolic reminder for our students to keep going, to keep moving forward.”

“The competencies students acquire through business education – decision-making, critical thinking, and human relations – are skills that are aligned with the needs of our global economy,” said Superintendent of Schools Vincent S. Smith. “Through these learning opportunities, students gain a set of practical skills applicable to the workplace as well as a greater understanding of business operations.

“Although the district has incrementally expanded business education opportunities the limitations imposed by budget constraints make major upgrades challenging,” he said. “It’s for this reason that the support of the community is so vital to our district’s continued success and future growth.

The OceanFirst Foundation is consistently distinguished for their generous support of various endeavors within our schools and our community, and we are incredibly grateful for their support.”

Since 1996, the OceanFirst Foundation has invested $25 million to support education, the arts and healthcare in the communities they serve.

(STUDENTS OF 08742, Grant Awarded to Point Borough High, continued)

This is my monthly challenge for you: let someone help. A holiday that revolves around food involves a lot of prep work. There is absolutely no reason for you to take it all on yourself. If someone offers help, say yes. So what if their yams aren’t as good as yours might have been? It’s one less thing for you to worry about. If you’re tired, ask your boyfriend or your husband or your kids if they can wash the dishes.

Take a minute to sit down and breathe – and be grateful for yourself. You’re fabulous. Let your loved ones show you so!
