• Pilots and Commanders will learn allthe switches and displays in the cockpitthat operate the Shuttle and itspropulsion systems.

• Mission Specialists will learn aboutspace suits and walking in space on anEVA (that’s NASA talk for an ExtraVehicular Activity). The EVA might be torepair the Hubble Space Telescope, construct part of the Space Station ordeploy a solar panel.

Space Station crew members train onall operations of the Space Station: lifesupport, crew and equipment supportsystems. The crew also trains toperform several scientific experimentsthat focus on materials science, Earthstudy, crystal growth and plant studies. The Space Station crew will also betrained for emergency proceduresand spacewalks.

SPACE CAMP®/AVIATION CHALLENGE

Space Camp opened in Huntsville, Ala.in 1982; and the Aviation Challengeprogram began operation in June 1990.The Space & Rocket Center® (USSRC) isan entity of the State of Alabama. It isgoverned by the Alabama Space ScienceExhibit Commission.

The USSRC, U.S. Space Camp andAVIATION CHALLENGE are primarily selfsufficient with added support fromcorporate partners. The USSRC is theofficial NASA Visitor Center for theMarshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) andreceives no direct federal funding foroperational support. NASA/MSFC does, however, supply technical assistance andexpertise.

AGE/GRADEAPPROPRIATENESS

Since opening in 1982, we havegathered a wealth of experiencedeveloping and providing curriculumthat is age appropriate and grade specific.Reading levels, cognitive learning skills, and emotional maturity are just a few ofthe factors we have used over the yearsto develop programs that will not only befun, but educationally challenging foryoung people of all ages andbackgrounds. We make every effort toarrange teams so that each camper hasan age or grade in common. We knowfrom experience that a camper will enjoyour camp if he or she is not intimidatedby older students, or can’t keep up withthe intellectual or physical demands of ahigher level.

Please help us achieve the very bestexperience possible for your child byenrolling him or her in the camp thatcorresponds with his or her age and/orgrade requirements.

COUNSELOR TRAINING ANDQUALIFICATIONS

You are entrusting us with your child’ssecurity and well-being. Our rigidstandards for hiring qualified counselors,as well as training them, wereestablished to ensure each camper enjoysa safe, fun, and educationally soundexperience. A minimum of two years ofcollege, or equivalent experience, ismandatory.

While a significant percentage of ourstaff are education majors, others havedegrees or are pursuing degrees in

business, science, math, engineering orliberal arts. The common thread they allshare is a desire to work with children. Many staff members have actually gonethrough our camp programs as campers.

Every potential counselor must pass acomprehensive background check, pre-employment attitude test and drugscreening prior to employment. Onceemployed, and before they ever meet acamper, all program staff membersreceive extensive training in thefollowing areas: program facts andhistory, simulator safety and operation, proper discipline techniques, and age-specific behavioral characteristics.

Counselors are closely supervised andevaluated weekly at the end of eachcamp session by their campers. Weencourage parents to meet program staffmembers at registration and graduation.

SECURITY & SAFETYCamp supervisory staff and separate

uniformed security staff are on site 24hours-a-day, seven days-a-week whencamp is in session to ensure the camper’ssafety. Security of personal items is thecamper’s responsibility. Do not bringitems of high value to camp. Cell phones,DVD/CD players, etc. are not permitted. Most hallways and common areas aremonitored by security cameras.

The safety of all campers is of utmostimportance. Counselors highly trainedand certified in the proper use of allsimulators ensure that campers have asafe and enjoyable experience.

Each simulator is built to the higheststandards and equipment is safety-checked daily and maintained byprofessional technicians. Each enclosedsimulator is equipped with smokedetectors and emergency stop buttons. Itis mandatory that campers wear safetyhelmets when using most of theastronaut training equipment. (Note:spaceflight simulators may cause motionsickness.) A four- foot minimum height isrequired for simulators used in programcurriculum. Maximum weight forastronaut training simulators is 260pounds per person.

MEDICAL STAFFINGMedical staff is on site 24 hours daily

for all weeklong youth programs. Allmedications for weeklong and 3 daysummer campers (prescription, over-the-counter, vitamins, herbal) are collected

during registration and dispensed asdirected by you or the prescribingphysician. They must be in their originalcontainers with labels and instructions inEnglish. Campers requiring injectionsmust provide medications; syringes; andlegible, signed instructions from yourphysician.

Should a camper require medicalattention, you may ask us not to use ordisclose any part of your protected healthinformation for the purposes of treatmentor healthcare operations. You may alsorequest that any part of your protectedhealth information not be disclosed tofamily members or friends who may beinvolved. Your request must state thespecific restrictions requested and towhom you want the restrictions to apply.

Medical-related questions may bedirected to the Nursing Staff at (256)721-7162.

SPECIAL NEEDSACCOMMODATIONS
