April 17, 2016 Fourth Sunday of Easter

THE ACTS OF THE APOSTLES During these weeks of Easter until the feast of Pentecost, you will notice that the scripture readings for the liturgy are from Acts; sometimes called “the Book of Acts” or the “Acts of the Apostles”. St. Luke is the author of the Gospel of Luke and the Acts which scholars agree was written in Rome around 62 or 63 AD. The book is addressed to Theophilus, usually thought to have been a Gentile who was interested in learning more of Christianity and whose name suggests may have been a symbol of all lovers of God. Peter and Paul are prominent in this book of Acts. Peter received a revelation that the gospel was also to be shared among the Gentiles. No longer is it about race, it is now about grace. The Gentiles hear the gospel and rejoice and they too received the Holy Spirit. Many were converted and the church grew. The biggest conversion was a direct act of God.— the conversion of Saul the persecutor to Paul who ends up being perhaps the greatest evangelist, apostle, and church planter that the world has ever seen. His missionary journeys where he preached and struggled to define the church’s position with regard to the law of Moses spread the Gospel “to the ends of the earth”. Luke wrote the book to record how believers were empowered by the Holy Spirit, and the Spirit plays a dominant role in this book like in no other book in the Bible. Being led and directed by the Holy Spirit, the believers worked to spread the Gospel of Christ, and are a model for the future church. It is also the history of the birth, the founding, and the spread of the Church from Jerusalem to Rome. It also records the transition of the Church from being almost exclusively a Jewish institution into becoming a Gentile and an international institution. Consequently, it records the transition of Christianity from a Jewish religion into an international faith.

The Gospel of salvation is for all because Jesus Christ is Lord of all.

The book starts with Jesus’ ascension into heaven. Jesus gives the imperative command for the Great Commission for the apostles to go into all the world, starting in Jerusalem but including Samaria and the ends of the world. The book begins that command with the founding of the church and the coming of the Holy Spirit which Jesus promised would come after He ascended to the Father. The church is founded in Jerusalem only by means of and after the outpouring of the Holy Spirit and the boldest of sermons by Peter on the Day of Pentecost. This is followed by the fellowship of the believers where they all shared their belongings, met daily in the breaking of bread, praising God, devoting themselves to the apostle’s teachers, gaining favor among the people and numbers being saved day by day .

God began to perform many signs and wonders through the apostles and more and more believers were added to the church. And just as they had done with Jesus, people began to bring many of the sick and they were healed.

The believers faced jealousy, imprisonment, persecution, and martyrdom. but it only served to make the church stronger and the gospel more widespread throughout the land.

The book of Acts was never finished. It is left open-ended. It is a story that is still taking place today.

April 17, 2016 Fourth Sunday of Easter Sunday Scripture Reflections

Reading 1 Acts 13:14, 43-52 Today's reading allows us to share one of Paul's great victories on his first missionary journey.

It is the Sabbath, and Paul goes to the local syna-gogue with his companion Barnabas. The city's large colony of Jews has gathered there to hear Paul's mes-sage. He proclaims the Good News of Jesus Christ so well that many are converted on the spot. The word spreads rapidly and by the following Sabbath the entire city, Jew and Gentile alike, turns out to hear Paul.

Some of the leaders of the synagogue do not ap-prove of including Gentiles in their midst. They expel Paul and Barnabas. Paul quotes Isaiah ("I have made you a light to the Gentiles") to show that Jesus will be recognized as Savior of the whole world. Not only the Jews, but the Gentiles as well prove Paul right by gladly accepting Jesus as their Lord. Reading 2 Revelations 7:9, 14b-17 In this vision from Revelation, huge crowds of faithful believers from every nation gather before God's throne. To Christians who are suffering persecution, this vision is comforting. They need to know that their suffering will be rewarded by Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God. When the end comes, he will be there to shepherd and protect them. He "will wipe away every tear from their eyes."

Gospel John 10:27-30

The words Jesus speaks in this reading were di-rected to some Jewish leaders who wanted to trip him up. They were hoping he would call himself the Messiah. Instead, Jesus refers to himself as

"the Good Shepherd."

He describes the secure and lasting relationship he has with his sheep, those who truly hear him and believe. Just as no one can separate Jesus and his Father, no one can take Jesus' disciples away from him.

Domingo Escritura Reflexions

Expulsaron a Pablo y a Bernabé.
