Streamlined butnaturally intuitive, the03D provides instantaccess to and easymanipulation ofparameters via onboardcontrols or a PC-compatible mouse(optional), plus a large,backlit 320 x 240 dotfluorescent graphicaldisplay. Four user-defined switches areideal for controllingexternal multitrackrecorders via MMC(MIDI Machine Control).

The 03D provides all the familiar features of a traditionalanalog mixer channel strip, plus the digital convenienceand flexibility of scene storage and recall, EQ, dynamics,channel and effects libraries, full onboard automation, andmuch more.

The 03Ds flexible configuration of analog and digital inputs and out-puts makes it suitable for a wide range of professional mixing applica-tions. Included are 24 input channels and a fully-featured stereo in-put for a total of 26 inputs plus 4 bus outputs, 4 auxiliary (and 2 in-ternal) effect sends, a main stereo mix bus and a solo bus. Stereo digi-tal inputs and outputs, plus 8 digital inputs and outputs (optional, viaa YGDAI slot), provide a total of 10 digital inputs and 10 digital out-puts.

Input channels 1-8 have mic preamps, XLR and balanced stereo 1/4"phone connectors, and individual phantom power switches, and canaccept input levels from -60dB to +10dB. Inputs 9-16 feature balancedstereo 1/4" connectors and support line level signals between -20 and+10dB. All 16 channel inputs feature input gain controls with 30 de-tents for precise and repeatable setting. Channels 1 and 2 include ana-log inserts for connecting external dynamics processors. Aux sendsand bus outputs can be paired together for stereo operation and can berouted to the control room monitors for cue mixes, with onboard ef-fects returns included. The four bus and four aux send signals are out-put via balanced stereo 1/4" connectors.

Coaxial and AES/EBU stereo digital I/O connectors permit direct connection to DAT recorders and other compatible digital devices. Thestereo digital input signals can be routed to the stereo bus for submix-ing, or to the stereo input channel for mixing and processing. The num

ber of inputs can beincreased by digitallycascading two 03Dstogether, with both

sharing bus, aux, ster-eo, and solo busses.The 03D can also bedigitally cascadedwith an 02R.

The 03D features an uncompromising array of onboard parametricEQs and dynamics and effects processors, with signal processing per-formed by Yamahas custom 32-bit DSP chips same as in the02R and available parameters selected in collaboration with professio-nal sound engineers. Comprehensive libraries of preset EQ and dy-namics settings provide a great place to start or for reference, and plen-ty of user programs are available to store your own. 40 four-band para-metric EQs and 40 dynamics processors are available for all 26 individ-ual channel inputs, the 2 onboard stereo effects returns, the 4 bus out-puts, 4 aux sends, and main stereo outputs.

Each EQ band has arange from 20 Hz to20kHz which can beadjusted in 1/12 oc-tave steps and a 0.1-10Q range. High and lowEQ bands can be con-figured as shelving orpeaking, with the high

band capable of beingconfigured as LPF, andthe low band as HPF.EQ gain settings rangefrom -18 to +18dB. EQsettings can also be

copied between channels via the equalizer library. The EQ librarys colection of 40 preset EQ programs include specific settings which can beapplied to everything from acoustic and electronic instruments to per-cussion to vocals. Including the 40 memories for storing your own EQsettings, a total of 80 EQ programs are available.

The onboard dynamics processors include compressor, expander, gateducker and compander functions, and a total of 80 dynamics memo-ries. Any input channel (1-24 or stereo input) can be used as a key trig-ger, and AUX 1 or AUX 2 can be used as a key-in signal for any chan-nel. The dynamics li-

brarys collection of40 preset dynamicsprograms include set-tings appropriate forthe mixing of strings,

brass sections, sam-pled percussion, vo-cals and more, and40 user dynamics pro-grams are availablefor storing your own.

METER screen pages display all channel, stereo in aneffect 1 and 2 input levels visually, as well as aux anbus output levels.

The Digital In Setup screen permits easy setting andconfirmation of word clock source, stereo inputassignment and monitoring word clock locking status.

The Digital Out Setup screen permits easy setting anconfirmation of YGDAI output assignments, bus channedirect, aux and stereo output.

The four-band EQ features a "quick-draw" graphic EQcurve, providing the engineer with a clear and visualimage of the channel EQ.

The 03D allows fine-tuning of all dynamics parameterscomplete with gain reduction metering and a graphicurve for visual monitoring of applied processing.

The 03Ds YGDAI (Yamaha General Digital AudioInterface) slot which accepts the same single-sizeYGDAI cards as the 02R provides 8 digital inputsand 8 digital outputs for direct digital connection toall major modular digital multitrack recorders (in-cluding Alesis ADAT, Tascam DA88 and DA38),disk-based recording systems, and AES/EBU andYamaha format systems.The YGDAI digital outputs can be configured as

bus outs, aux sends, direct outs, or stereo outs soalthough the 03D is essentially a four-bus mixer,you can assign the four busses and four aux sendsto the YGDAI slots eight outputs to achieve eight-track simultaneous recording.

The 03Ds two powerful new sets of effects processors which utilizethe same DSP and some of the same algorithms as Yamahas ProR3and REV500 feature64 basic presets, withvarious reverb, delay,echo, chorus, flange,pitch shifting andother effects to

choose from, as wellas the new freeze(sampling) and ampsimulator, or guitarpreamp, effects.Including the 32 usermemories, a total of96 effects are on hand.

The 03D also features channel input delays of up to 200ms which isuseful for microphone-placement compensation for live recording andvideo editing.Channel delays canalso be mixed withthe dry signal toprovide delay andecho effects. Output

delays, for the stereoand 4 buses, of up to40ms are useful forapplications whichrequire delay-compensation on theoutputs.

New Freeze (sampling) and Amp Simulator (guitarpreamp) effects greatly expand the 03D's onboardsound processing power.

DELAY/ screen pages allow access to channel inputand output delay parameters as well as channel phasesettings.

4 fader groups and 4 mute groups work independentlyto let you build up complicated mixes fast.

Panning and output bus assignments are displayedgraphically and are easily accessed.

SOLO function allows nondestructive soloing thatdoesn't affect the main stereo mix, plus Mixdown Soloand Solo in Place.

Mix snapshots of entire setups, or scenes, consisting of approximately2000 parameters including all input channel-to-bus routing and outputconfigurations, fader and pan positions, EQ and dynamics set-tings everything can be stored and recalled instantly using the 50

scene memories. Scenes can be recalled manually, by MIDI, or usingthe automix function. A Recall Safe feature permits selected channelsto be isolated from scene memory recalls. An UNDO/REDO functionpermits undoing and redoing of scene memory recall operations.

The 03Ds quick-response, positive-feel 60mm motorized faders func-tion as conventional mixer faders, auxiliary send level controls, and on-

board effects auxsend level controls,depending on currentstatus. When a scenememory is recalled,

the faders positionthemselves automati-cally to the levels stor-ed. During playbackof an automix, fadermovements are re-played automaticallyin synchronizationwith MIDI time-code.Adjacent odd/even

number channels canbe linked in pairs,with panning eitherindependent organged. You can con-trol two adjacentchannels paired in

stereo using only onefader.

A crossfade time ofup to 10 seconds, in0.1-second steps, can

be set for faders aspart of a scenememory. You canauto-fade the stereooutput fader usingthe built-inautomation based onMTC time-code, or bysetting a crossfadetime in a scenememory.

Comprehensive monitoring functions include Recording Solo mode,where the SOLO bus feeds the monitor output, allowing nondestruc-tive soloing that doesnt affect the main stereo mix. Theres also Mix-down Solo mode, where the stereo output is connected to the monitoroutput, so solo affects the stereo output. And theres Solo in Place,where the SOLO bus is connected to the monitor output, and also soloaffects the stereo output.

MIDI IN, OUT and THRU terminals permit control of all parameters(approximately 2,000) in realtime using MIDI Control Change and Sys-tem Exclusive messages. The 03Ds MIDI remote function is extremelypowerful. MIDI remote allows the 03Ds motorized faders to remotelycontrol the internal levels in a digital audio workstation, or the faderscan be used to edit the internal parameters of an outboard effects pro-

cessor or synthesizer.

03D faders and four user definable buttons can be used to control oth-er MIDI devices such as digital audio recorders and processors viaMMC (MIDI Machine Control). A TO HOST (RS422) port permits di-rect connection to a personal computer without a MIDI interface.

Scene, EQ, dynamics,effects and channel li-

brary user memory,and automix data can

be saved using MIDIbulk dump opera-

tions to a MIDI datafiler (such as the Ya-maha MDF2 MIDIData Filer) or MIDIsequencer.

MIDI remote permits detailed control of parameters oexternal devices.

With the 03D, surround sound mixing suitable forCD-ROM and DVD productions as well as audiopost applications is built right in. Three types ofsurround sound configurations are available. Thededicated pan page provides precise control.

The 03Ds twin RISC CPUs ensure fast and reliable control of LCDgraphics, faders and automix. Internal audio processing is performedat 32 bits by the powerful Yamaha DSP chip, providing a dynamicrange of 192dB. Uncompromising sonic quality and performance areguaranteed by 20-bit, 64-times oversampling AD converters on each in-

put and 20-bit, 8-times oversampling DA converters on the stereo out-put and monitor output. Bus outputs and aux send outputs use 18-bit8-times oversampling DA converters. The audio dynamic range is animpressive 105dB for analog input to analog stereo output.

Automixing lets you set up portions of a mix and then have them play back automatically as you work on otheautomix dubbing. You can also insert and modify specific parameters "off-line".

The 03D also allows full onboard dynamic automa-tion unprecedented for a mixer in its price

range of all faders (including the AUX send fad-ers) as well as channel on/off, EQ, pan and sur-round pan, and scene, EQ, dynamics, effects andchannel libraries, can be automated by snapshot.You can easily and quickly update dynamicchanges in realtime, and even insert and modify pa-rameters "off-line" using the Event Edit function.There are four automix memories and one currentmemory. Recording and mixdown automation can

be synchronized to external MIDI time-code(30NDF, 29.97NDF, 30DF, 29.97DF, 25, and 24).
