JULIE & JULIAFrustrated by her day job, New Yorker Julie embarks on an ambitious project to cook all of Julia Childs’ 524 recipes from her landmark cookbook, ‘Mastering the Art of French Cooking’. Intertwined with Julie’s story is the true story of Julia Childs (Meryl Streep) and how she brought sophisticated French cuisine to the TV-dinner palates of America. Written and directed by Nora Ephron (Sleepless in Seattle, When Harry Met Sally), Streep steals the show as the larger than life Julia (think of a 6’2” Fanny Craddock).

HOW TO COOK YOUR LIFEFilmmaker Doris Dörrie delves into the life and philosophy of renowned chef, cookbook author and Zen priest Edward Espe Brown, who uses Zen mediation techniques in his cookery classes in San Francisco. This is a fascinating glimpse of a man determined on all levels to perfect his cooking and impart his knowledge to his students, with humour, grace and the occasional emotional outburst. You may never cut your vegetables in the same way again.

“A jaunty mix of chanting, baking and spiritual uplift” Janette Catsoulis, NY Times

GOODFELLASThis classic film is now 25 years old, and is the true story of Henry Hill (Ray Liotta), a half-Irish, half-Sicilian Brooklyn kid who is adopted by neighborhood gangsters at an early age and climbs the ranks of a Mafia family. Based on the true-life bestseller, Wiseguy, and backed by a dynamic pop/rock oldies soundtrack, GoodFellas was a hit with both critics and movie-goers alike, and received six Academy Award nominations, including “Best Picture” and “Best Director” (and a win for Joe Pesci’s astounding performance).

“For as long as I can remember I always wanted to be a gangster. To me that was better than being president of the United States. To be a gangster was to own the world.”

ADDICTED TO SHEEPIn the North Pennines, tenant farmers Tom and Kay spend their days looking after their flock of prized sheep, and hoping that this will be the year they breed the perfect one. Director Magali Pettier, herself a farmer’s daughter, follows a year in their lives, capturing both the stark, stunning beauty of the landscape, and the brutally hard graft it takes just to survive. Their three children are growing up close to the land, attending a school entirely comprised of farmers’ children, thoroughly immersed in their remote rural world. A terrific and unflinching documentary about rural life and the economic rollercoaster that is farming today.

“a wonderful blend of innocence and experience. The whole family are terrific company” Mark Kermode, Guardian.

The RBCFT hope to have a special guest to introduce this film.

VANISHING OF THE BEESBees and other pollinating insects play an essential role in ecosystems. A third of all our food depends on their pollination. A world without pollinators would be devastating for food production. Vanishing of the Bees follows commercial beekeepers David Hackenberg and Dave Mendes as they strive to keep their bees healthy and fulfill pollination contracts across the U.S.

Following the film will be a screening of ‘Hives for Humanity’, a short film by Matthew Parry about a woman with a passion for bees who sets out on an endeavour to set up urban beehives in central Vancouver.

Our special guest for this event is Luisa Gonzalez, a local sustainable bee farmer, who will talk about the downsides of commercial beekeeping practices and bring along some beautiful honey to sample.

films and events, opening up discussion and debate. WAITRESSJenna is an inspired pie-maker who hopes to leave her abusive husband by earning enough money through her waitressing job. Her feelings about her life, her marriage, and her pregnancy are all channelled into her pie baking as she takes steps, sometimes one forward, two back, into discovering her own identity and making her own choices. This is the first and only feature of indie director Adrienne Shelly who tragically died during its post-production, giving us an all-too brief glimpse of an original and innovative directing talent.

SLEEPERWoody Allen’s cult science-fiction parody stars himself as Miles Monroe, the owner of the ‘Happy Carrot’ health food store, who wakes up 200 years in the future where fast food is now deemed to be healthy, and the US is a police state. Miles becomes embroiled in a rebel plot to infiltrate the establishment and find out the truth behind the sinister ‘Aries project’. Douglas Rain, the voice of Hal 9000 in 2001: A Space Odyssey, is the voice of the evil computer. This is Woody Allen at his riotous best, with probably the funniest scene about cloning ever made.

“Pound for pound, and minute for minute, Sleeper may just have more laughs in it than any other Woody Allen movie”, Christopher Null, www.filmcritic.com
