This year’s Festival supporters have truly Bridged the Gap! From the amazing cross-community support at our fundraising Quiz to the array of inspirational contributions to our Programme and everyone’s enjoyment of the week.

We would like to thank Fife Charities Trust for their support along with Creative Scotland for their Live Literature programme, which is managed by Scottish Book Trust. This support has provided three leading Scottish authors – Lari Don; Anita Govan; and Millie Gray – allowing us to put on all their sessions free of charge.

Our Marquee – the Hub of our Festival – is sponsored once again by AVD Ltd, who supply all our lighting, sound and AV equipment. The week will kick off with The Purple Shop Sports Day, you will be able to enjoy Inglis Vets Pet Show, The Aberdour Pharmacy Village Affair, Molson Coors Brewing Company Bar, Abbott Risk Consulting Raft Race and Ronde Bicycle Outfitters Haughcross, while our Big acts can

relax in the McTaggart’s Green Room – then we will celebrate the conclusion of another great Festival at the FREE ForthRoad Family Ceilidh. Once again, our printed Programme was produced free of charge by Standard Life lnvestments.

Our Box Offices will be run efficiently by The Pharmacy, McTaggart’s and The Purple Shop.

I am very delighted to introduce the Programme for the 31st Aberdour Festival – packed with many more events than ever before! We trust everyone will find something of interest this year. We even had to schedule events on the first Friday as there was no room anywhere else in the Programme to accommodate them!

Following the very successful 30th anniversary programme we took stock, reviewed and considered changes to the format to keep the Festival as fresh and exciting as it has been for the past three decades. We also asked you, the festivalgoers to tell us what you liked and what you wanted more of; we hope this year’s extended programme has achieved this! However, we don’t want to stand still as we continue to develop the Festival year-on-year. So throughout the Festival we will be asking you for your views and comments which will help the Committee develop next year’s programme. After all, the Aberdour Festival is YOUR festival.

This year’s programme has been made possible thanks to the generous contribution from Big Lottery Celebrate Fund. The theme Bridge the Gap brings together all of Scotland’s main events for 2014 – Homecoming; Commonwealth values, cultures and games; 100th anniversary of First World War; 50th anniversary of the Forth Road Bridge; and closer to home the 10th anniversary of the twinning between Aberdour and Corte Franca.

Throughout our programme this year you will find exciting workshops, events, activities, performances and exhibitions that celebrate and explore all these things; Scottish Culture, Sport, First World War Heritage, Science and Engineering, International Arts and Diverse Cultural Opportunities. All of which will bring the 31st Festival to life. At its heart sits Aberdour Festival’s commitment to celebrating the values of the Commonwealth. In particular we have built a very strong children’s and youth programme to reflect the importance the Commonwealth places on investing in young people. Beyond this you will find opportunities through the 10 days that promote tolerance, respect and understanding; encourage you to take part in sport and physical adventures; provide time for you to think and engage on important issues like protection of the environment, equality and celebration of diverse cultures.

Without the support of the village the Committee would not be able to put on such an extensive 10-day programme so thank you to everyone who has and will help to deliver this year’s Festival. Feature Exhibition: Facing Time

Sam Wade (Kinetics Moving Sculpture) likes to think his kinetic sculptures tread a fine line between art and engineering, exploring the long tradition of form-through-motion by combining movement and machinery with, he hopes, a degree of precision, humour and truth to materials. He works mainly in stainless steel, aluminium, brass, copper, Perspex and wood to construct a sculpture rather than carve or cast it. Kinetic: ‘an assemblage or sculpture, made up of parts designed to be set in motion by an internal mechanism or an external force.’ His kinetics range in size from large constructions destined for outdoor settings to smaller indoor works: his collection of wall clocks are kinetics literally playing with time.

Peter Hallam is a well-known, self-taught painter working primarily in oils on canvas. He is a very individual artist who has painted from an early age and has developed a very unique style. The colours in his work are always striking and though his figurative paintings have an abstract feel, they are emotionally engaging. His work has been exhibited throughout the UK and in the USA, including the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh. In 2006 he won the Cravens Art Prize at Northumbria University. In March 2014 he exhibited at The Biscuit Factory in Newcastle as the main artist for their Spring Exhibition.

Chris Hall is an internationally acclaimed sculptor making a welcome return to Aberdour. His figurative sculpture has a deep empathy not only with the stone and the wood that he works with but with the human spirit. He seems to connect us to a primal shared source that eludes time.

Winifred Fergus is presently working on a series of wildlife paintings; animals that are common in the landscape around her studio in rural Aberdeenshire. The paintings are sensitive yet unsentimental.

Jim Livingstone over the past few years has made several painting trips to the West Coast of Scotland. These landscapes come from this period, painted from watercolour studies.

Heritage Exhibition – HMS Tarlair: Aberdour’s role in the fight against the U-boat

– Friday 8 August 12noon-9.00pm – Saturday 9 August 11.00am-5.00pm – Sunday 10 August 1.00pm-5.00pm – Church Hall – FREE

At the beginning of the First World War the German U-boat (unterseeboot or submarine) had become a major threat. Its large-scale destruction of merchant shipping caused not only great loss of life but also a fear that the British population would be fatally starved of materials and food. Between 1915 and 1918 the Admiralty Experimental Establishment Station, HMS Tarlair, located at Hawkcraig Point in Aberdour, was the centre of a highly concentrated effort to defeat the German U-boats. The work carried out at HMS Tarlair is of local and national interest. During its short period of operation, major technological advances were achieved, not only in the detection of submarines, but it was one of the first instances of collaborative work between civil and military scientists and researchers.

Alongside the HMS Tarlair exhibition will be items of more general interest concerning the history of Aberdour. Those of you who visited last year’s local history exhibition and enjoyed the display of old photos will be pleased to hear that there will be more of the same this year. We are grateful to all those who have made this material available.

There will also be a small display relating to the Hewitt brothers who are commemorated in a plaque in St Fillan’s Church and on the war memorial outside the Church Hall. We are grateful to David Graham for making this material available.

Cartoon film animation workshops for children

Kicking of this year’s bumper Festival Programme we are bringing the Commonwealth Games to life through our first ever Film Animation Workshop! Draw your own characters and bring them to life in a cartoon film! All your films are put online too and will be shown at the BAFTAs on Wednesday. Imagine a journey to a Commonwealth country. Make a film about your favourite sport, or maybe make friends with magical creatures from a faraway place; your imagination is the only limit! Talk: Madness and Mysticism – 5.30pm-6.30pm – Aberdour Primary School – £3.50 at the door (includes a glass of wine/soft drink)

This presentation considers the nature of psychosis: is it best understood as a spiritual journey or a pathological process? Dr Allan Beveridge, Consultant Psychiatrist at Queen Margaret Hospital, will consider the 19th century French poet, Gerard de Nerval, who described his mental breakdown in his novel Aurelia. Nerval sought to explain his breakdown in spiritual terms but also accepted the psychiatric treatment of his day. In the second part, the poet Jo McFarlane, described as ‘the Poet Laureate of the Scottish Recovery Movement’, will respond to the questions raised by Nerval’s novel by drawing on her experiences of mental illness and her own poetry.

As 2014 is Scotland’s Year of Homecoming our Great Grand Hootenanny will, through a whirl of

musical celebration, formally open this year’s 10 days of Festival fun, mayhem, reflection, beauty and

our special time together.

Aberdour Festival’s friends the Coaltown Daisies and our own Second Stages will host a night stuffed full of special

guest appearances including Sandra MacBeth, Kenny Martin and Rab Thomson, bringing their

multi instrumental talents to the night, along with some of our own local musical treasures. A night of traditional and

not so traditional toe tapping, laughter filled Hootenanny time awaits for all. It’s the party to kick it all off.

Please come to the Festival Marquee as colourfully as you can to see the Royal Party be crowned by Lisa Norman, Aberdour’s very own Commonwealth Queen’s Batonbearer. Thanks to the pupils and teachers of Aberdour Primary School, the Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Rainbows and Brownies for their collaboration in making artwork for this year’s parade that reflects two of the themes of this year’s Festival – Bridge the Gap (with giant rainbows) and celebrating the diversity of the Commonwealth. Whatever the weather, come and turn the streets into a carnival of colour.

Join the Festival King and Queen and their Royal Attendants along with the loud, lively, energetic and dynamic Edinburgh Samba School – a colourful Samba percussion and dance group, specialising in authentic rhythms from the flamboyant Carnival culture of South America - as they lead us through the Village to Dovecot and back to The AVD Festival Marquee for an afternoon of fun at the Village Sports and Gala Day.

Straight from the Parade, there will be lots of fun, novelty races, opportunities to compete for some of Aberdour’s village trophies including the traditional Easter v Wester Tug o’ War! There will also be stalls like Welly Throwing, Beat the Goalie, Pedal Go-karts, Golf putting game and others – all set against some great summer sounds. There will be lunches provided by Aberdour Football Club (ASDC) – salads, filled rolls, quiches etc. along with teas, coffees and cold drinks. Full bar available from 12noon.

Toppy Star Pony Rides for kids

An introduction to pony riding will be available for children this year, provided by Toppy Star Pony Hire, Falkirk. The ponies are calm, kind, gentle and well used to children riding and petting them. Children will be given the opportunity to gain confidence in handling ponies and will be taken for an individual walk, led by a qualified pony handler. Please note, no open toed shoes/sandals should be worn near the ponies and we ask that no dogs or pets come near the ponies at any time.

There will be an educational static falconry display at our Gala Day, provided by Kingdom of Fife Falconry. Talks will be given on the different birds of prey, and there will be the opportunity to hold birds and get photos taken. Children need to be aged 5+ to hold the birds.

The Gala Day Finale will be for the first time a Mega Inter-Village Water Fight organised by the Scouts. Bring your own water guns and pistols, super soakers, water blasters and we will see who can work as a team, and has the most firing power! We advise that you wear eye protection.

Gary Delaney headlines the comedy show at this year’s Aberdour Festival.

He is a razor sharp one-liner comedian, who is widely regarded as

being the most quotable comic on the circuit. Gary is a regular guest on

Mock The Week, Radio 4’s Loose Ends, Radio 5’s 7 Day Saturday and Radio 2’s

Russell Kane’s Whistle-Stop Tour.

Supporting Gary will be white-haired Irishman Caimh McDonnell and

two Fife acts – Richard Pulsford and Diane Stewart. Caimh regularly

performs at all the major clubs within the UK and internationally. Caimh is

a writer for TV and recent credits include The Sarah Millican Television Programme and A League of Their Own.

Burntisland’s Richard has a wealth of experience performing at hundreds of gigs; earlier this year he performed

his first one-man show ‘Richard Pulsford is Going On’ at the Glasgow

International Comedy Festival, a show he will be taking to the

Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Dunfermline born Diane tells funny stories about being a woman who walks the fine line between bitterness and cake, telling observational tales of being a

round woman living in a square world.

Stroke Play Competition for teams of three – male, female or mixed – with at least one member of the team a member of Aberdour Golf Club and all players holding a current club handicap. The Competition is Stroke Play over 18 holes, the two best Nett scores counting at each hole. Each team is responsible for recording their own Nett scores and should book their own tee time directly with the Club Professional. Tee times can be booked from Monday 21 July onwards.

Writing for kids? That must be easy!

Lari Don is an award-winning children’s author, who has written picture books, adventure novels, collections of myths and legends, and a new teen thriller. In this workshop she will share the challenges and privileges of writing for children, and knock down a few myths about kids’ books (it’s certainly not easier to write for children than adults, and you don’t have to be a teacher or a granny to understand what children like reading...). Come along and see if you too could fire the imaginations of the next generation. An interactive session, ideal for anyone considering writing children’s books or already giving it a go!

Come and take part in a range of fun, themed arts and crafts activities: create your own felt flags, make a kite with Amy, create something amazing with recycled materials or celebrate the many cultures of the world by making Commonwealth-themed bunting. This is run as a drop-in event, so there may be waiting time to take part in some of the more popular activities.

All champions need to build stamina, have courage and learn to go for it.Extreme Sports introduces you to the adventurer you always wanted to be. Try out kayaking in the waters of the bay, improve your mountain biking skills and conquer the climbing wall. Qualified instructors will lead all the activities and all equipment will be

provided, including the bikes. It is advisable to bring a change of clothes, towel, spare shoes, water bottle and snack.

Lari Don, award-winning children’s writer, will be sitting in a corner at the Festival Marquee writing her next novel. She would be happy to discuss how she writes, answer any questions you have about writing and probably pick your brains for character names… She’ll be sitting typing… But she’s happy to be disturbed!

Myths of the Vikings: Thor’s Magic Hammer and the Apples of the Gods

All cultures of the world have always had their Gods. “In the Beginning there was only ice and fire – with the great emptiness of Ginnungagap in between.”

So begins the Creation of the World of the Norsemen. Gather around and hear stories of ODIN King of the Gods, THOR and his mighty hammer and LOKI – the shape changer and mischief maker. Fifer Penny George spent two years living with the remote Himba tribe of Namibia, working with them to develop community tourism businesses. The wider aim of this project was to reduce the high levels of poaching of the endangered wildlife we commonly associate with Africa – lion, elephant, rhino and leopard. Penny will share fascinating photos and stories of her experience, whilst challenging the audience to consider the hot topic of wildlife conservation from the African perspective.

This will be an innovative, team bonding, engineering-based bridge building project, provided by the Construction Industry Training Board. Included in all tickets for the Science Afternoon is a free Starlab Planetarium experience, provided by St Andrews University, tailored for each specific age group. bass baritone, celebrated 25 years on the operatic stage in 2010.

His 25th anniversary saw him on the Glyndebourne stage as the

wicked stepfather Don Magnifico in La Cenerentola by Rossini. He has

performed across the globe in a variety of roles and musical styles

from Mozart through to John Adams.

In addition to his operatic roles, Jonathan regularly broadcasts on BBC radio and television and has

recorded numerous CDs and television programmes in many

genres including light entertainment and religious broadcasting,

particularly with Songs of Praise.

A Persistent Illusion Trio for clarinet, cello and piano by Julian Wagstaff. This is a live performance of a trio for clarinet, cello and piano, inspired by the past, present and future of chemistry in this part of Scotland. It was written by Scottish composer Julian Wagstaff and will be performed by professional classical musicians from Scotland’s leading ensembles. This piece was commissioned by the Royal Society of Chemistry (Edinburgh and SE Scotland Local Section) in 2011 to celebrate International Year of Chemistry that year.

At New York’s Central Park Zoo, a lion (Alex), a zebra (Marty), a giraffe (Melman) and a hippo (Gloria) are best friends and stars of the show. But when one of the animals goes missing from their cage, the other three break free to look for him, only to find themselves reunited ... on a ship en route to Africa. When their vessel is hijacked, however, the friends, who have all been raised in captivity, learn first-hand what life can be like in the wild as they try to get home.

Two American Mafiosi, Gino and Settimo, take refuge in the Glasgow cafe owned by their Scottish/Italian cousin. But cousin Roberto isn’t the tough guy they’d expected. Gino and Settimo try to repay Roberto’s hospitality by chasing off a debt collector who wants his property, but their strong arm tactics alarm him and he realises they aren’t the PR consultants they claimed to be!

Take part in an exciting foot race using a special orienteering map. The aim is to get to all the points in the shortest time; the fun is in avoiding getting lost and beating your rivals! It should take about 20 minutes depending on your speed. There will be two courses on offer so don’t follow the team starting before you. A short introduction to orienteering lasting 5-10 minutes will be on offer to all participants.

Linda Thomson from the Women’s Support Project in Glasgow talks on her area of specialism and the organisations national campaign called ‘The Porcupine Campaign’. The campaign is about raising awareness of the prickly subject of the normalisation of porn and unequal gender roles in relations – through the internet and in particular social networking sites etc that our young people are accessing and being

influenced by in a way no other generation has had to deal with. The presentation is aimed at adults of children and young people – and particularly parents who might feel they are struggling with helping their kids keep safe, develop healthy informed relationships and avoid the pitfalls on the internet that are easy to become vulnerable through.

Inequality is the talk of the political town. Whilst poverty may always be with us, the squeeze on incomes seems to be affecting those on higher incomes as well. So what’s going on? Is the recession to blame, or is it something more lasting? This talk explores some of reasons behind the inequality debate and paints illustrative portraits of modern Scottish families. Stephen Blackman has over 12 years’ experience as a professional economist - in the private and public sectors as well as academia. His interests mainly include factors concerning households (jobs, income, debt and wealth) but he’s also interested in economic history and political economy issues. The views expressed are his own.

An afternoon of energy packed physical fun to promote an interest in rugby in young girls and boys, carried out by Kirkcaldy Rugby Club. Kids will be divided into appropriate age categories and the session will include skills stations, obstacle courses and will culminate in a friendly taster game of rugby.

Sheep shouldn’t look up, or they find themselves drifting in the sky with the clouds. Help poor Cirrus the sheepdog gather his floating flock. A sell-out at last year’s Edinburgh Fringe, this interactive and sensory show is great for young children and adults to enjoy together. Performed by Ipdip Theatre.

Best-selling author Millie Gray will be discussing and reading snippets from her books which are fictionalised social histories covering the period from 1907 to 1970s. As there has been so much change in the last hundred years that no one could have foreseen, she will also afford an opportunity for discussion with the audience on how ‘The Bridges’ have affected life in the Fair Kingdom of Fife and be asking has their presence had any effect on our greatest export… our bright young people.

Experienced HypnoBirthing practitioner Bonnie Ewan will give a talk on the main elements of HypnoBirthing, which is growing in popularity. HypnoBirthing is a complete antenatal education programme for pregnant mums and their birth partners. Our philosophy is that pain need not be a natural accompaniment to birth, and that with correct mental and physical preparation, most women can achieve a safe, calm, more comfortable birth experience. There will be time for questions and answers at the end of the talk.

Diana Maxwell’s book introduces us to the disparate group of people brought together at the base in Aberdour in 1915 and the ground-breaking work that they carried out here. It is a story of people, place and technology that should be remembered, and Diana’s book is a tribute to those people and their achievements. Come and hear Diana as she tells us about the history she has collected (including stories from Aberdour residents) and pick up a signed copy of her booklet, hot off the press. Lewis Banks may also talk about some technical aspects of the work carried out at the base.

BEACH DAY – Black Sands – Stalls and BBQ on the Shore Promenade

Black Sands and the Harbour is our venue for a range of exciting events to appeal to all ages. Enjoy the stalls, the Festival BBQ and street entertainment. There will also be Puppet shows throughout the day to keep the young ones entertained. The Boat Club will be open for excellent teas and home baking.

Sandcastle Competition – Registration from 9.30am-10.15am – Build from 10.15am-11.30am – Followed by judging and prize giving – FREE (donations of £2.50 to help Baby and Toddlers will be appreciated)

As ever, the Aberdour Baby & Toddler group organise this hugely popular event, and will be waiting to greet you at the registration desk on the promenade. This year the following categories will be contested: Sandcastles and Sand Sculptures (individuals); Sandcastles (groups) children only; Sandcastles (groups) children and adults; and Sand Sculptures (groups) with or without adults. Just remember you can only use what you find on the beach for decorations and metal spades aren’t allowed! This year’s theme is the Commonwealth Games, so do your best… amaze us!

Percussion Workshops – FREE

Local drumming facilitator Chris Cimini will be hosting open workshops throughout the day where you can try your hand at a variety of percussion instruments. Experience the delights of releasing your inner rhythm and create a vibrant sound-drop for the Beach Day adventures. Percussion instruments will be provided but feel free to bring your own along and join the jam.

Festival Try-a-Sail as personal guest of the Skipper

Skippers of the Boat Club invite you to join them for a sail around the Bay. Please meet them on the Pier and you will be allocated to a boat on a first come – first served basis. If you have a lifejacket, please bring it with you. If not, don’t worry there will be some for your use.

Beach Volleyball Tournament (4-a-side)

– Registration from 12noon, play starts at 2.00pm

Be a part of one of the most spectacular events at the Festival! Brave souls come from far and wide to put to sea on the flimsiest of contraptions, for a shot at the fame that comes from being a Festival Raft Race winner! Prizes awarded to the winners, the best constructed raft, and the raft that best captures this year’s Commonwealth Games theme. Talk: Radiology in WWI by Diana Maxwell

– 12noon – Church Hall – FREE – Open to all

The First World War 1914-1918 resulted in terrible deaths and injuries. In the basement of Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy, Diana found an amazing collection of 24 Original glass X-Ray plates showing war injuries from WW1 dated 1918/1919. They were mainly from the Bellahouston Military Hospital, Glasgow. As far as Diana could find out, they are the only collection which has survived. She was able to identify 7 out of the 22 soldiers from their war records. The talk will follow the soldiers’ journey from the battle field to the military hospital and the development and role played by these early X-Rays in WW1. Slides of the glass X-Ray plates, which are of surprisingly good quality, will be shown and discussed.

For the third year the Aberdour Festival brings you a Cyclocross bonanza. Join us for an evening of highly charged cyclocross racing and much more. Experience the cheer of the crowd, and the ringing of cowbells. Spectators can enjoy racing of all abilities, from the best the UK has to offer to absolute beginners. Following the cyclocross a family ceilidh and BBQ will take place in the Marquee. Entry for spectators is FREE but all donations towards the costs for this exceptional event gratefully received. Before the Family Ceilidh come and join us on a musical journey as The Go Figures play two sets special to the Festival, one of Dylan’s songs and one of Neil Young’s material. The band is comprised of 6 very experienced musicians, who have toured extensively here and abroad, opening for and/or backing the likes of Grammy winners Dave Alvin and Jim Lauderdale, as well as The Scorchers’ Jason Ringenberg, Chuck Prophet et al. With three lead singers – male and female - and two lead guitarists, as well as bass and drums, there will be a rich and varied sound to the night’s gig.
