Never Give Up!
The great Sir Winston Churchill, prime minister of Great Britain, who led Britain to victory in World War II, said, “Never give in. Never give in. Never, never, never, never—in nothing, great or small, large or petty—never give in, except to con-victions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force. Never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.” I love the words “never give in.” It is easy to give in and give up when the going is rough. However, as long as you have the hope that you will be successful, you will stay with it. I love college basketball, and this time of year is called “March Madness”- the NCAA college basketball playoffs. It is every college basketball fan's dream, es-pecially the first weekend of the 68-team championship playoff games. The games are on several television channels, and you can watch basketball to your heart’s content. This past Sunday evening the Texas A&M Aggies were playing against the Northern Iowa Panthers. The Aggies were trailing by 12 with 44 seconds left in regu-lation. (I thought the game was over and was ready to change the channel!) But the Aggies made the biggest come back in NCAA championship history. They scored twelve points to tie the game in regulation. They went on to win the game in double overtime. I felt sad for the Northern Iowa players, but the Aggies refused to give up when all seemed lost. It was an incredible basketball game with a fantastic finish, proving the old adage, “It ain’t over ‘till it’s over.” I have heard it said and I believe that sports competition in many ways can mirror life. We must believe that no matter how bad the situation appears, it ain’t over ‘till it’s over.” This should be true especially for the believer, because we have more than hope in ourselves. We have the Lord’s promise that He is with us and will find a way to help us. “Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary” (Galatians 6:9). Perhaps, the easiest thing to do is to give up when the going is tough and the odds are against you! I have known Christians who attended church faithfully only to eventually give up. The writer of Hebrews was writing to encourage Christians who Continued inside . . .

were on the verge of giving up as Christians. He said to them, “For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive what was promised” (Hebrews 10:36). You should take the time read Hebrews 12:1-3. When I think about the earthly struggles that individual Christians must deal with in order to be victorious, I also think about the struggles that local churches face. It is a fact that local congregations that make up the brotherhood of churches of Christ are having to deal with uncertain times. Local church-es struggling to maintain good attendance numbers can become places of discouragement. Once discour-aged, some Christians can become hard and judgmen-tal or just give in to their discouragement. Christians and local churches must be constantly reminded that the Lord is bigger than all the mountains standing before us (Matthew 21:21). Why should we give up or even be discouraged considering all the Lord can do for us? Remember, the Lord was able to take a smooth stone and David, a man after His heart, and bring down a giant (I Samuel 16-17). He was able to bring down the wall of Jericho (Joshua 6:1-27). He was able to part the Red Sea so to rescue His people and destroy their enemy (Exodus 14). Therefore, the key is never, never, never, never, giving up on doing what is right before God, whether it is an individual Christian or a local church. We must have the faith to believe that with God’s help we will eventually experience the victory. “The horse is prepared for the day of battle, but victory belongs to the Lord” (Proverbs 21:31).
