Dear Students ,

Times have changed. Competition is not only between two companies or two products but between the skill sets of two individuals.

One can face such competition only on the basis of knowledge gained and experience earned. Time has become a very scarce resource. Money spent can be earned, but a day gone is a day gone. It’s a race of time. Every individual has to learn as much as possible in the shortest possible time. No more need one wait until the completion of his or her graduation and then acquire professional knowledge. One has to begin the process immediately after his/ her 12th.

Globalization has become a buzzword. Technology has converted the whole world into a small village. Internet is the platform that made this possible. Opportunities have become global and execution has become local. Geographical boundaries have disappeared. One can stay anywhere and deliver anywhere in the world. Way of working has also dramatically changed. The pace of the life has really become very fast and multi-dimensional.

India is on the growth path. Indians are a very important part of every Fortune 500 company and every developed country. No company or country in the world can today afford to ignore Indians. We are today involved in the development of every company and country globally. India has become the support of the whole world. India has the youngest population in the world and intellectually one of the best. The whole world is looking at India as the land of immense opportunities. A former prime minister of India has said that IT is not only information technology but also INDIA’S TODAY, INDIA’S TOMORROW AND INDIAN TERRITORY. All this ensures every Indian of multiple opportunities and rapid progress. But one needs to be ready with the right skill sets. Every student today needs to invest time and efforts to build a solid global career to encash the opportunities that he comes across. With multiple career options available, it’s very important that student selects a career which suits his aptitude and capability. Every student can either build a career in the field of technology or he can gain the knowledge of technology to empower whichever career he is pursuing. Be it engineering or chartered accountancy or architecture or a B.A., B.Com or B.Sc., no career is complete without the knowledge of information technology. The Indian universities today have made available many options which can enable a student to take any career of his choice. Selection of a career is no more academic percentage dependent but WILL dependant. If you have the WILL, there are many WAYS available to create a world class global career. The next few years of your life will define the rest of your life. I wish every student a glorious future and a successful life ahead. Make your family and your country proud of your global achievements.

“Education is the most powerful weaponwhich you can use to change the world”

You have probably heard of Linux as the free alternative to Windows and OS X. It’s one of the most popular free PC operating systems out there and chances are, you are already using it without realizing. Did you know that your Android phone is powered by Linux? It is an incredibly versatile piece of code that can fit the needs of almost any user. If you are looking for something different to try on the desktop besides Mac and Windows, you should really give Linux a try. Not only is it free, it is extremely customizable. Similar to Android on the smartphone, you can customize Linux to your heart’s content. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. In order to get into Linux, there are

What Is Linux? When someone mentions Linux, it’s always in conjunction with another name, e.g. Fedora Linux, Ubuntu Linux, Android powered by Linux; the list goes on and on. What exactly is Linux anyway? ‘Linux’ refers to the Linux kernel, which is a program that interfaces between the application software and the hardware of a computer. What they all have in common is that they all use the same kernel as the interface be-tween software and hardware.

In cases where the computer is referred to as ‘running Linux’, it is running an OS with Linux as the kernel. Some of you may encounter some people insisting that it be called GNU/Linux. This refers to the fact that most of the operating systems that uses Linux gets a large portion of their code from the GNU Project, without which, the Linux kernel itself cannot function. Calling it GNU/Linux is a way to give credit where credit is due. For the sake of simplicity, we will refer all operating systems using the Linux kernel as Linux.

Why Is It Free? Most people know Linux as the free operating system, free here meaning free of charge. That’s right, free of charge, but it also refers to free speech. What this means is that the source code for Linux is available for everyone to view, study and modify, along with sharing their changes with anyone who would like a copy.Compare this to Windows and OS X which, while still popular, are closed source, cannot be studied and cannot be

distributed freely. This open nature is one of the main reasons that Linux derived operating systems have been successful, with many people and companies creating their own derivative versions of Linux.

What Is A Distro?

A ‘distro’ refers to a distribution of the Linux Operating System, where a person, group or company builds upon Linux and releases it under

their name. Examples of popular Linux distros include Ubuntu, Fedora, OpenSUSE, among others. While all of them use the Linux kernel, they are all different with what software they include. From the the default software to even the user interface and experience, no two distros are alike.

Each distro brings something different to the table, offering up specific features for specific user sets. However, for a beginner, it is best to start simple, with a distro that offers a simple user experience for people that are new to Linux. The most recommended Linux distro for beginnerswould be Ubuntu Linux, as it is relatively easy to set up and use and has a lot of support.

Will My Hardware Support It?

It used to be that hardware support for Linux was spotty at best, with many components and peripherals

not working properly or not working at all. Fortunately, most of that is in the past with the majority of Linux distros being able to run on modern hardware with little to no problem. So chances are your hardware will be able to run it. I say ‘little to no problem’ because there may be times when you might run into an issue or two. While the Linux community have done an amazing job in making sure that the OS will be able to use your hardware, it may still not run.

You will have to shoot down for a trou-bleshooting guide or hope that the manu-facturer has provided a proprietary Linux driver for the hardware.

Can I Try Before I Install It?

The great thing about most Linux distros is that you are able to try them before

installing what you like on your computer. Linux providers provide you with an easy

way to try out the OS by way of a Live CD. Down-load an ISO, burn it, and from there you can boot from the disc so that you can try out a distro be-fore committing to it.

If you decided not to in-stall Linux but the idea

of carrying a spare OS around with you sounds useful (and really there

are many cases where you might want one), you can create a Live USB. Just like a Live CD, a Live USB is a bootable USB drive that can boot Linux on most com-puters. This way you can have the Linux experience without installing over your computer’s OS.

5 Video Editing Apps For IOS & Android Devices

Apple’s iPhone have always come with one of the best smartphone cameras and many users take advantage of this by taking beautifully shot photos and videos on it. Once you have that footage, you’re going to want a way to edit it. Although iOS has its own editor, lucky for us, there are plenty of third-party apps that can give you more editing capabilities to make your videos shine. Many of the video-editing apps found in the App Store can rival desktop editing apps and they are also very easy to use. Some can even turn a drab, boring video into something spectacular in a matter of minutes. We will start the list with our Top 5 picks, then give you 10 more if you feel like you don’t want to settle so quickly.

Top 5

1. IMovie iMovie is Apple’s very own video-editing app, made available for anyone who has a new iOS device. A powerful movie editor that everyone on iOS should download, the app can do most of the things that its desktop counterpart can with a few limitations. Projects done on the app can

also be transferred to the Mac for further editing.

2. Magisto Magisto is perfect for the beginner as it doesn’t require

much video-editing skills to use. The app offers tools for you to do so, letting you alter and match the audio and video even after the movie is created. In-app purchases include a subscription to their pro features, which includes unlimited cloud storage space and downloads, and the ability to make longer movies.

3. Video StarAnyone who ever wanted to make their own music videos should get this app. Video Star will provide you with all the tools you need to make your own music video. Pick a song from your own library or choose one of the many free songs that are available in-app – a new one comes out each week. The app also has in-app purchases for more effects you can add into your video.

Controlling CSS3 Animation With Steps() Function

Animation is one of the greatest features introduced to CSS. In the past, web animation was only available in the JavaScript or Flash territory. But, today, many websites opt to use CSS for adding subtle animation. In previous articles, we have gone through how to do some cool things with CSS animation like adding a marquee effect and adding bounce effect to something. In this article, we will once again dive into CSS animation. This time, we are going to discuss a CSS animation function, steps(), that enables us to control the animation’s movement — don’t freak out, it’s not as puzzling as it sounds. Let’s take a look.

So What Is It? Normally, the animation in CSS will go straight from start to end at the specified duration. steps()is part of the animation timing function. It allows us to control the animation to move gradually. The very best example that shows how the steps() works would be the second hand of an analog clock; the clocks second hand does not move continuously, instead its movements are split into stages. So let’s replicate it with CSS animation and steps.

Replicating The Second Hand Of A ClockLet’s first add the keyframes that will rotate the Second Hand for 360 degrees; the rotation will start at 90 degrees (or at 12 o’clock). Note that the following code may need a prefix (-moz-, -o-, and -ms-) in order to work across browsers.

Five Steps to Protect your passowordA report issued this week claimed that a Russian cyber crime group stole 1.2 billion usernames and passwords from 420,000 websites. While some security experts question the report’s findings, Symantec asserts the potential threats are important to take seriously. The average user has 26 password-protected accounts but typically uses only five different passwords, says Symantec.Login WindowPassword threat insights from Symantec.Consumers are experiencing password fatigue. The average user has 26 password-protected accounts but typically uses only five different passwords. Consumers are resistant to regularly updating their passwords. A Symantec survey indicated that 38 percent of people would rather clean a toilet that come up with a new password. The number one cause of breaches and compromised records in large organizations is stolen credentials. Symantec research asserts that 80 percent of data breaches could have been eliminated with the use of two-factor authentication. In 2013, the two most common passwords were: 1) 123456 and 2) password.Symantec recommends consumers take five steps now to protect their most sensitive password protected information:

Pay special attention to your email credentials: A lot of users fail to recognize that their email account can be a front door to their entire digital life. Think about how many times you may have reset your password on some other site and the recovery link is sent to your email account. In addition, avoid opening emails from unknown senders and clicking on suspicious email attachments; exercise caution when clicking on enticing links sent through email, instant messages, or posted on social networks; and do not share confidential information when replying to an email.Change passwords on important sites: It’s a good idea to immediately change passwords for sites that hold a lot of personal information, financial details, and other private data. Cyber criminals who have your credentials could try to use them to access more information on these accounts. This is particularly true if you have used the same password on multiple sites. Attackers will often try to use stolen credentials on multiple sites.Create stronger passwords: When changing your password, make sure that your new password is a minimum of eight characters long, and that it doesn’t contain your real name, username, or any other personally identifying information. The best passwords include a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters.Don’t re-use passwords: Once a hacker has your account information and credentials, they’ll try to use it to gain access to all your accounts. This is why it’s important to create a unique password for each account. If you vary your passwords across multiple logins, they won’t be able to access other sites with the same information.Enable two-factor authentication: Many websites now offer two-factor (or two-step) authentication, which adds an extra layer of security to your account by requiring you to enter your password, plus a code that you will receive on your mobile device via text message or a token generator to login to the site. This may add complexity to the login process, but it significantly improves the security of your account. If nothing else, use this for your most important accounts.

What is LOGO?A logo identifies a company or product via the use of a

mark, flag, symbol or signature. A logo does not sell the company directly nor rarely does it describe a

business. Logos derive their meaning from the quality of the thing they symbolize, not the other way around - logos are there to identity, not to explain. In a nutshell, what a logo means is more important than what it looks like.To illustrate this concept, think of logos like people. We prefer to be called by our names rather than by

the confusing and forgettable description of ourselves such as ‘the guy who always wears pink and has blonde hair’. In this same way, a logo should not literally describe what the business does but rather identify the business in a way that is recognizable and memorable. It is also important to note that only after a logo becomes familiar does it function the way it is intended to do, much like how we must learn people’s names to identify them. The logo identifies a business or product in its simplest form.

How to Design a Logo: A 5-Step ProcessStep 1: Design BriefThe time and effort required to complete a design brief, as well as what content the design brief will have, will depend on the client you are working with.

Some clients know exactly what logo they want and give you all the information you need to produce it without you having to ask. One situation where this can be the case is when your client is also a designer, or has extensively worked with other designers in the past. Some clients, on the other hand, only know that they need a logo and would rather leave the rest to you. Often, this is the case when you work with non-designers, such as new entrepreneurs. At this step, your challenge as a logo designer is to get the information you need about the project to enable you to come up with the perfect logo for them.

Step 2: Research This step requires you to find out more about the industry your client is in. Consider the historical perspective of your client and their industry, and look at emerging trends in the marketplace.

07

Kandivali(W) | Vol-03 | Sept-2014

Step 3: Build the Design ConceptsOnce you have done your research, you can get on to the fun part of the logo design process. Let your ideas run free and get them down on paper. This is the step in which every designer will have his/her own way of doing things. This is your time to develop an often elusive good blend of great graphics that also convey the right message for your client. In this step, you are trying to encapsulate the diverse and complex nature of a business into a small and simple design, suitable for use in a multitude of different circumstances (business cards, marketing material, website design, and more).

Step 4: Feedback and ReviewStep back from your work, take a break, and look at it later or even the next day.If you have come up with a lot of logo design concepts, focus on the stronger ones and discard the weak ones.Make changes and let the designs develop; now is a great time to get feedback from colleagues and other designers, and possibly even from your client.

Step 5: PresentationOnce you have finalized your designs, it’s time for a formal presentation to your client. They may have asked for a variety of logos to choose from, but this step, generally works better if you keep the amount of logo design concepts you present to a minimum.

Grid computingIt is the collection of computer resources from multiple locations to reach a common goal. The

grid can be thought of as a distributed system with non-interactive workloads that involve a large number of files. Grid computing is distinguished from conventional high performance

computing systems such as cluster computing in that grids tend to be more heterogeneous and geographically dispersed (thus not physically coupled). Although a single grid can be dedicated to a particular application, commonly a grid is used for a variety of purposes.

Grids are often constructed with general-purpose grid middleware software libraries.

Grid size varies a considerable amount. Grids are a form of distributed computing whereby a “super virtual

computer” is composed of many networked loosely coupled computers acting together to perform large tasks. For certain applications, “distributed” or “grid” computing, can be seen as a special type of parallel computing that relies on complete computers (with onboard CPUs, storage, power supplies, network interfaces, etc.) connected to a network (private, public or the Internet) by a conventional network interface,

such as Ethernet. This is in contrast to the traditional notion of a supercomputer, which has many processors connected by a local high-speed computer bus.

Oculus VR is an American virtual reality technology company founded by Palmer Luckey and Brendan Iribe. Their first product, still in development, is the Oculus Rift, a head-mounted display for immersive virtual reality (VR). In

March 2014, Facebook agreed to acquire Oculus VR for US$2 billion in cash and Facebook stock.

The Oculus Rift is a virtual reality head-mounted display. Software, most notably video games, must be custom programmed to use the Rift. Developer kit preorders were made available for $300 through Oculus VR’s website starting on September 26, 2012. These kits sold at a rate of 4–5 per minute for the first day, before slowing down throughout the week. In March 2014 at GDC, Oculus announced the upcoming Devkit 2 (DK2) which they expected to begin shipping in July 2014.

The Rift is expected (but not confirmed) to become available in late 2014 or early 2015
