    14TH JANUARY 2015STEPPING INTO A NEW YEAR

We are up to a bright, sunny, cold winter’smorning. Our naughty little sheep is so pleasedto see the sunshine. He’d heard on the newsthat there may be snow on the way and asusual he is anxious because it’s our First Stepsservice this afternoon; the first one of thisbrand new year. Our naughty little sheep andhis friends are excited and looking forward toseeing the children again though they docomplain about the cold as we walk up tochurch. Luckily the sun is still shining. Ournaughty little sheep’s friends tell me thatthey’ve heard a rumour that they’re going tohide today, but they don’t really feel like itbecause they want to sit with the childrenagain. It is their favourite thing at the moment,so when we get into church they all findthemselves seats. When our little altar is ready, our naughty little sheep and the glittery dragonmake themselves comfortable there, too. When everything is ready and our doors areopen Mum Mel comes in with dear little Baxterwho finds himself some jingle bells. Soon otherMums, Grannies, children and babies come into join us and it’s time for our service to begin. We light two special candles today, one forBowen, who is going to be a big boy of two andone for his Mum Angela, who can’t be with ustoday because she is really poorly! We all hopethat she’ll be much better very soon. Todaywe’re thinking about stepping into a brand newyear, like putting the first footsteps into newlyfallen snow. Lovely! We remember that God inJesus Christ walks with us every day whatevercomes, whether times are happy or sad. Wesing that Jesus is our friend, remembering thathe died for us and is now King of Kings, withGod in heaven, and his Holy Spirit is with us,now. The jingle bells are all working well. We

sing that the Father Himself loves us and Ieven remember the actions. Everyone is doingreally well and I can see those cuddly creaturesjigging about in time to the music. We continueour theme of love and friendship when we singabout Jesus’ wonderful love. My goodness weare so very blessed, aren’t we? Surrounded byhis life affirming love!It is very important that we show God’s love tothe world around us by the way that we liveeach day, isn’t it? Part of that is being lovingand generous and sharing some of the goodthings that we have with those who aren’t aslucky as us, and we sing “Share it round”, afavourite of our naughty little sheep, who is stillstanding very still on our little altar, well awayfrom those candles. Well we don’t want anysinged wool, do we? I know that he needs abath, but that is a step too far! Everyone isreally good and quiet for our prayers and wehave so much to thank God for, haven’t we?Then it’s time to blow out our candles and ourservice is over.Out we all go into the hall for a cuppa, a chatand time for play. Our naughty little sheep andhis friends makethemselves comfortableand they have a lovely timewatching the children play.It is their secondfavourite thing afterhaving a cuddle! Asusual we have had agreat time together andwe hope that everyoneone will be able to comeand join us again on the11th February for our nextFirst Steps service when wewill have crept a little furtherinto 2015.God BlessRosemary Austin

Lent campaignlaunched to learnabout heart ofChristian worshipThe Bishop of Exeter, Robert Atwell isencouraging the church to use one of thelatest titles in the popular Pilgrim Coursefor study in Lent this year. The Pilgrim Course, published by ChurchHouse Publishing, offers an approach of“participation, not persuasion” and iswritten to help people explore what itmeans to be a Christian.Across six sessions, The Eucharistexplores why Holy Communion stands atthe very heart of Christian worship andinvites us to consider the place of worshipin our own lives.A social media campaign will run on

Twitter (@PilgrimCourse and#LentPilgrims) throughout Lent to supportand encourage churches and individualsto follow the course and share stories. The accounts will include resources toinspire anyone considering running thePilgrim Course:• videos introducing each session• audio reflections,• links to sample sessions and notes• quotes and prayers throughout eachsession.

Bishop Robert, one of the authors of thecourse, said:“The disciples Jesus met on the road onthe first Easter Sunday recognized him inthe breaking of bread. This Lent as wejourney towards Holy Week and Easter, this course offers us a unique opportunityto explore how Christians encounter Godin worship and above all in HolyCommunion.”

Archbishopsproposeprogramme ofreform and renewalThe Archbishops of Canterbury and Yorkhave written to members of the Church ofEngland’s General Synod proposing a“programme for reform and renewal” forthe church. The statement came ahead of thepublication of a series of reports andpapers proposing reforms that werepublished on the CofE website ahead ofthe meeting of the February meeting ofthe General SynodThe reports have been releasedalongside videos and blogs on theChurch’s communications blog. The first paper, Developing Discipleship, was published alongside a videointerview with the Bishop of Sheffield,Steven Croft reflecting on the vision forthe Church in discipleship.Bishop Steven said:“The Church is called to be and tobecome a community of missionarydisciples. Discipleship is not just aboutlearning, it’s also about service and beingequipped for God’s service in the worldas Christ sends us out. And growing theChurch is about making disciples inobedience to Jesus’s commission inMatthew 28. Serving the common good isabout equipping every Christian discipleto make a difference, in the wider world,in their workplace, in their family, in theircommunity, so that the Church as awhole is a blessing to God’s world and achannel of his grace and love.”The second paper published was entitled‘Simplification’ and in the accompanying

video interview, the Bishop of Willesden,Pete Broadbent introduced the work ofthe group:“The remit of the Simplification TaskGroup has been to identify hindrances tomission.
