Teen Ministry after 11:00am Mass
Dear Parishioners,
There are many things I would like to be writing to you about as we leave on pilgrimage to Ireland, especially anticipat-
ing the visit to Kildare, the home of St. Bridget. However, that which I said I would comment on I will proceed to, and that
is the moral catastrophe of priestly abuse of minors and its cover-up.
Sincere lamentation, and all that may be necessary for real healing to occur must be public, and from every segment of
the Body of Christ. Ownership, repentance, and reform are also necessary. The reform part still seems difficult.
I agree with many spiritual writer and psychologists in the Church: it seems we really need to look at a more mature
understanding of human sexuality, how male power issues and clericalism can be bad for the Church, and how we might
really accept and advance the vision of the Second Vatican Council for a more collaborative overseeing of the Church and
each person’s personal involvement as a baptized member of the Body of Christ.
Some say that celibacy is the culprit. The Church teaches that celibacy is a gift from God. Gifts from God are to be
loved. But the legal mandating of a “gift” is an oxymoron. Many young men seeking ordination may not really have this
gift. The gift is good, but rare, and not an absolute necessity for ministry. Might we examine this practice to see if it
contributes to a degree to the problem? As Fr. Richard Rohr O.F.M. has said, what is most important in a priest is the
capacity of sharing an alive and warm inner experience of God.
For this to happen, ministers in the Church should be on the path of mature psycho-sexual development. A young priest
needs time to continue maturing and processing who he is. In the culture of clericalism this is often discouraged, as the
priest is held to be near perfect from the get-go. I suggest that, like therapists and psychologists, a priest should be required
to see a professional like these throughout his priesthood. Or, minimally, be required to be part of a priest support group that
deals honestly with feelings and becomes a source of insight and growth for the priest. I’ve been a part of such a group for
over 25 years and I cherish it.
I’ve also been a part of an organization that governs itself by a body composed of laity and clergy, men and women,
straight and gay, etc. It works to promote the ongoing implementation of the renewal of the liturgy directed by the Council
and subsequent documents. The body represents some 26 dioceses throughout the Southwest and its board is some 50 mem-
bers. We respect each other, pray, celebrate, and learn, and have been doing so for over 50 years. Leadership and tasks are
shared. It has been a beautiful paradigm of how a non “top down only” experience of Church is truly possible. More infor-
mation about this group, the Southwest Liturgical Conference, or SWLC, can be found on the web.
I need to also point out that many leaders in the Church and the psychological community reject the conflation of homo-
sexuality and pedophilia. They are not the same. To equate them is a dangerous route to bigotry against gays. Sexual crimes
are committed by people with a sickness, an immature unintegrated sexuality, a maladjustment, no matter the sexual orien-
tation. I am certain you are aware of this.
I think the Church is doing so much to see to the safety of our children now. I think the shock is the further revelation of
how little it did in the past, and its cover-up. I pray and encourage you to prayer—and action—to work for all that is further
needed for healing and the advancement of real emotional growth in the Church. May God’s Holy Spirit work on earth to
advance the Kingdom. May we all be a part of that work and be open and willing to letting go of whatever is in the way.

Spiritual Direction
Have you heard of the ancient Catholic practice of Spiritual Direction? Very early in our history and through the centuries individuals have sought out companions and guides for their spiritual growth. If you would like more information but cannot attend that even-ing, email Diane Saunders or Cathy Olds [email protected]. Come and see what spiritual direction is all about.

ST. VINCENT DEPAUL
Spiritual
The gospel today hits home closer than we
may think. What traditions do we blindly cling
to? Perhaps it is enough for us just to go to Mass on
Sunday? Do we keep the letter of the law and miss
entirely the spirit of the law? Interior righteous-
ness means a heart tuned to God. Purity of heart is
expressed in righteous living; self-giving for the sake
of others.
Pantry Needs
At this time our pantry is in need of rice, canned
tuna, jelly and coffee and diapers in SIZE 4. Pan-try items can be dropped in the SVdP grocery carts
located outside of church during weekend
Mass. Thank you for your help!
Come Join us... All are Welcome!
If you are looking for a way to give back to your com-
munity, experience great fellowship AND grow spirit-
ually, we hope you'll consider joining our St. Bridget,
St Vincent de Paul ministry. Help is needed in sev-
eral areas. Please call us at 480-807-1493 for
more information. Let us show you how we bring the
light of Christ to our brothers and sisters in need.
