Subject Pronouns• The subject of a sentence tells who is

being described or doing something.

• You often use people’s names as the subject:

• Il Presidente Obama è americano.

• La signora Butcher non è inglese.

Subject Pronouns• You also use subject pronouns (I, you,

he, she, we, they) to tell who is being described or who is doing an action.

• The subject pronouns replace people’s names.

• Here are all the Italian subject pronouns.

Subject Pronouns:Who are YOU?

• When talking to ONE person, Italian has two ways of saying YOU:

• tu (“familiar you”) is used with family, friends, people your age or younger, and anyone you call by his or her first name.

• Lei (“formal you”) is used with anyone else.

• When talking to TWO OR MORE PEOPLE, Italian uses:

• voi (you plural, “you all”).

• You are already familiar with some forms of ESSERE (to be).

The Present Tense of ESSERE

• In Italian, a verb has different forms to tell you who the subject is.

• Changing a verb form so that it matches its subject is called conjugating.
