HEADLINE NOTICES Phased & Staggered Re-opening of Kingsdale for
a Rolling Proportion of Year 10 & 12 Students
Please be informed that from Monday 15th June 2020, we shall begin welcoming allocated students from Years 10 & 12 to school for a one week period, on a rolling basis, as part of government proposals to support the wider reopening of secondary schools nationally. Parents of students in these year groups, have been written to separately (letter available on website), with specific details regarding this provision, as well as the individual 5 day timetable for their child. Parents of students in other year groups are advised that the government currently has declared no plans to re-open schools before September 2020 to their children and that remote online learning will therefore continue for an indefinite period for these students.
Studying Languages at Oxford University Webinar
Last week, our Year 12 students had the fantastic opportunity of taking part in a webinar about studying Languages at Oxford University. Offered through Southwark School's Learning Partnership (SSLP), the session was delivered by Daniel Cabeza- Campillo, a lecturer in Spanish at the university and Editorial Assistant for the Journal of Spanish Language Teaching. The students were given an interesting and engaging insight into the structure and application process for languages courses and what studying at Oxford would be like. This was an opportunity like no other for talented linguists, who all really enjoyed it. For further information regarding our Year 12 preparation for university programmes, please contact Mr Anderson via [email protected]
Year 11 A-Level Introductory Programmes
Year 11 parents are reminded that their children should now have been allocated to pre A-Level introductory courses and provision via MS Teams. Please contact the Year 11 Heads of Learning via [email protected] with any queries.

Perhaps it Is the robin’s routine I long for; A life in the air, on the move Perhaps? I look at the Robin, try to share my thoughts; Like people share their screens on zoom But he is distracted. And then he Cocks his head to one side; Surveys me with a glint in his eye, I think Does he understand? But he Can’t, he has Never been enclosed, has he? But wait Of course Perhaps he does understand; For he too was trapped inside the egg, waiting To break free. Ayla Styles, Year 7 I Come From I come from a foster home a place, I like to call my own, a place where it feels nice to have some time alone, time to think about the unthinkable and the unknown. I come from a family of black and white, we love each other, no matter how much we fuss and fight, families are not all perfect, and the family I have is clearly worth it. I come from a world of insecurities, where everyone is scared to show who they truly want to be, one where we all lack a certain quality, that define who we are and how we want to be seen. I come from a foster home, a family of black and white, a world of insecurities and a planet of people who just want to be set free. Chloe Ellison, Year 9
In Lockdown I look up, and There he is; The fledgling robin that visits Every day. Through the glass I look; Through the borders of my Small world. He flies About, the fledgling robin; At peace with his own World. His world Is trees; And insects, food and flight That’s all. My world Is school on teams; Rationed air and confinement and Much more. Both worlds are Different, both new; His is all he has known, but me, I have memories. Memories of A better time; Where we thought school was a bore, yet now We long for it. School was Routine, even if; We were naïve enough to Dread it. Now, what Is my routine? Eat sleep repeat like those Annoying t-shirts? But my Routine is more; It has school time, the short minutes I get in the Fresh air. And yet it feels Different to before; This routine feels enclosed, trapped, as if I’m slowly suffocating.

Student Recommendation
Angelie Nadarajah in Year 10 would like to recommend: Uglies (series) by Scott Westerfield. At the age of 16 all people have to be changed from ‘Uglies’ into conformist ‘pretties’. We follow Tally as she ventures
into a new world of the unchanged after her friend Shay runs away to become an ugly forever. As Tally goes further into this world, she discovers not all was as it seemed. Angelie says: “I really enjoyed this series as it is a dystopian novel and it shows potential technology we may have in the future. The book also makes you think about our actions in the world”. Recommended for Key Stage 4 students and above.

Teacher Recommendation Mr Harding from the Languages department would like to recommend: El Amor en los Tiempos del Cólera (Love in the Time of Cholera) by Gabriel García Marquez.
This is a tale of unrequited love set against the background of a global pandemic. Mr Harding says he recommends this book because it is “extravagantly written in florid poetic prose. An epic love tale which is both touching and funny”. Mr Harding would recommend this book for Key Stage 4 and 5 students.
The English department is launching our very first flash fiction competition and we need student stories! Flash fiction is a short story up to 1,000 words and it can be based on any topic students wish. Some examples include stories on the theme of freedom, equality, friendship, experience, relationships or anything else that inspires them.
Stories should be sent to Miss Halpin at [email protected]
The deadline is the 5th July. The best stories will be published in an online anthology soon after.

The lecture I participated in was not only very
informative but was also well structured. There
were no delays and it was very to the point. As far
as information goes, there was an abundance and
it helped me to understand what checkpoint
Charlie was, for example, and how people in
Berlin suffered at the time.
Stories were also told to us to put us
in the shoes of someone living back
then, especially living in East Berlin
and attempting to make it into the
West side of the city for better
chances in life. It was fascinating to
learn that people managed to sneak
through houses that were on the line
of the border, or smuggled in the cars
of diplomats.
Rufus, Year 11
There are lots of other history opportunities to explore. Year-group specific information has been posted on Show My Homework but this week, why not have a look at the fascinating proceedings of the Old Bailey between 1674 and 1913, at https://www.oldbaileyonline.org/, or listen to a podcast from Homeschool History https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000hmmf/episodes/downloads
HISTORY Dept. update Thinking About Series
On Tuesday 2nd June, Year 11 & 12 students were invited to attend a webinar as part of the SSLP ‘Thinking About’ series. It was led by Iain MacGregor, who has recently written a book called ‘Checkpoint Charlie: The Cold War, the Berlin Wall and the Most Dangerous Place on Earth.’ Here, a couple of students tells us what they learnt during the webinar.
Iain MacGregor's talk was really
captivating; we were able to look at
the Berlin Wall in human terms
which is rarely the way it's studied.
We explored some amazing escape
stories, such as a woman who was
able to climb through a building and
drop down out of a window on the
other side! We also looked at the
lives of those who guarded Check-
point Charlie, and how the checkpoint
became such a unique location where just outside
of the wall, West Germans would sit and
eat in cafes.
Overall, it was a fascinating insight into life in
Berlin at the time.
Ava, Year 12
In Design and Technology our Year 7 and 8 students have continued to produce outcomes of astonishing creativity and quality. Over the last few weeks students have been exploring CAD (Computer added Design) at home. The use of CAD has definitely pushed some of the students into creating outcomes of a professional standard.
