One picture, hundreds of stories. To me, that is most peculiar. I

believe photography should be about creating an image that can only

tell one story and therefore can only be interpreted in one way. That

is what I strive for in both my commissioned work and in my personal

work. Once I have thought out all the details that make up that one

singular story and captured them in a picture, how can that picture

tell a different story than the one I intended? It is unthinkable to me

that my images might be used to illustrate a different story than my

own. Yet, during my research I found that it happens. A lot.

In this day and age, people are interconnected through social media

and internet. Information flows at higher speeds than ever before and

is widely available at the mere click of a button. In this intricate

web of information, technology, and internet, consumers are becoming

producers. Creating content on the web that is for everyone to see and

comment on. And in this data flow of ever growing information, people

interpret the images they see and share their interpretations with

the rest of the world. The intended stories behind pictures disappear

into the background as new stories and meanings emerge. Often, these

new stories are so far removed from the original, that they erase it.

Curious to see what new stories can be produced for a single picture,

I spent over four months collecting, translating, analyzing, and

categorizing the stories surrounding one single picture. The picture of

Putin riding his horse topless in Siberia.

IIntroduction

This image of Putin on his horse is a modern-day version of the

paintings and statues from the pre-industrial age of world leaders on

their horses. Images that were used as propaganda and for creating an

image of heroism and strength, just like this particular photograph of

Putin. Although Putin spends many hours and funds in trying to control

the media, the internet is not so easily controlled. This book will

show you just how the story behind one carefully thought out image on

the internet evolves over time.

I started somewhere in the middle and worked my way back and forward

in time to collect everything that was ever written and published

about this picture on the internet. I found 420 stories. Searching,

analyzing, and translating these pictures and stories took me about

10 minutes and 36 seconds per item. This accumulated to a total of

76 hours, 19 minute and 12 seconds. This book is a symbol of my own

fascination with staged photography and storytelling.

The page numbers are written in the amount of time spent in locating, translating, and archieving every story on the internet about the picture of Putin. The color of the time block tells you in which category you are.
