It's hard to believe that Ubuntu is now three years old and has beenthrough several versions already. F irst released in October 2004 by

Canonical L imited, and originally called no-name-yet.com (which sti ll works incidentally), Ubuntu is a fork of the decade-old DebianGNU/Linux.Thename,Ubuntu,comesfromtheZuluandXhosaconceptof ubuntu which means ' I am what I am because of who we all are, 'wh ich becomes ' Li nux for Human Beings' – Ubuntu's slogan. For a desktop environment, Ubuntu used GNOME and, l ike GNOME, Ubuntupromised new vers ions every s ix months - something no other L inuxdistributionwouldpromise,eventoday.

EachreleaseoftheUbuntucorewasgivenacodename.WartyWarthogbeing the first, with each subsequent release being given a somewhathumorousanimalcodename.

Dapperbecamethefirstreleasetoslipfromthehalf-yearlytimeframe.AprilcameandwentwithnoreleaseduetoMarkShuttleworth(Ubuntufounder)giving addit ional development t ime. This was also the f irst release to addLTS – Long Term Support – to Ubuntu. The desktop re leases were giventhreeyearssupportandtheservereditionsfiveyears.Anotherfirst;theLiveCDdoubledupastheinstallerCD.WhileintheLiveCD(nowcalledDesktopCD)userscouldclickontheinstallericonandeasilyinstallUbuntu.Notonlycould

users instal l Ubuntu to their hard drives, but with Dapper they could alsoinstal l Ubuntu to a USB device. Other improvements to the core included afaster startup t ime, a graphical shutdown, a new upgrade tool and bettervideo playback. Networking had always been tr icky to set up but the newNetwork Manager made things somewhat easier. Instal led now by defaultwas OpenOffice 2.0.2. As if al l that wasn’t enough, the fami ly grew onceagain . Rather than use GNOME or KDE, Xubuntu used the Xfce desktopenvironment . L ight on resources, Xubuntu was perfect ly sui ted to o lder desktoporlaptopmachines.
