The Fifith Sunday after Epiphany

1030am 10 February 2019 AD

The Tares. John Everett Millais, 1864

The kingdom of heaven is like a man which sowed good seed in his field.

But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat.

ST. MATTHEW 13:24-25

The Fifth Sunday after the EpiphanyOpening Hymn: 515 Lord, thy word abideth Worship continues on page 1 of the liturgy booklets.

The Collect: O LORD, we beseech you to keep your Church and household continually in your true religion; that they who do lean only upon the hope of your heavenly grace may evermore be defended by your mighty power; through Jesus Christ our Lord.Amen.

First Reading: Hosea 6:4-6This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Psalm 118:14-21

14 The Lord is my ‘ strength and my ‘ song : and is be’come ‘ my sal’vation.15 The voice of joy and health is in the dwelllings ‘ of the ‘ righteous : the right hand of the Lord bringeth ‘ mighty ‘ things to pass.16 The right hand of the Lord ‘ hath the pre ‘ eminence : the right hand of the Lord bringeth mighty things to pass.17 I shall not ‘ die but ‘ live : and de’clare the ‘ works of the ‘ Lord.18 The Lord hath chastened and cor’rected ‘ me : but he hath not given me ‘ over ‘ unto ‘ death.

-2-19 Open me the ‘ gates of ‘ righteousness : that I may go into them and give ‘ thanks ‘ unto the ‘ Lord.20 This is the ‘ gate of the ‘ Lord : the ‘ righteous shall ‘ enter ‘ into it.21 I will thank thee for ‘ thou hast ‘ heard me : and art be’come ‘ my sal’vationGlory be to the Father ’ and to • the ’ Son : and ’ to the ’ Holy ’ Ghost; As it was in the beginning is ’ now and • ever ’ shall be : world without ’ end. A ’ — ’ men.

New Testament Reading: Colossians 3:12-17Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Gradual Hymn:175 (vs 1,2) Come down, O Love divine

Gospel Acclamation:Alleluia  (3x) Christ was revealed in flesh

proclaimed a- ‘ mong . the ‘ nations and believed in through- ‘ out . the ‘ world. Alleluia  (3x)

- 3 -The Gospel: St Matthew 13:24-30Before the Gospel we sing: Glory to you, O LordThe kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field, but while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat and went away. So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared also. And the servants of the master of the house came and said to him, ‘Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have weeds?’ He said to them, ‘An enemy has done this.’ So the servants said to him, ‘Then do you want us to go and gather them?’ But he said, ‘No, lest in gathering the weeds you root up the wheat along with them. Let both grow together until the harvest, and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, Gather the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.’”

After the Gospel we sing: Praise to you, O Christ
