WELCOME!!Welcome to Building Partnerships to Reduce Crime (BPRC) inaugural Newsletter.

BPRC is Saskatchewan’s commitment to address the causal factors of crime and victimization. BPRC is an evidence-based approach which involves human service sectors, police and local communities working collaboratively on crime prevention, intervention and suppression to increase community safety and wellness

The Hub represents the strongest model under the BPRC approach, through a reallocation of existing government and community resources and premised on the fact no one agency has the resources or expertise to independently respond effectively to the continually expanding and complex social issues facing many Saskatchewan communities

The Hub model is a proactive, pre-emptive tool to mitigate individual situations of elevated level of risk (probability of harm to self or others, crossing multiple service sectors); this will have a positive impact on improved wellness for the individuals, families and the community as a whole, as well as decrease crime and victimization.

More information on the BPRC approach and Hub Model is available at:

HUB TRAINING VIDEOCOMING SOON…..

BPRC continues to develop resources to assist communities in replication efforts. Hubs have expressed during the development process, that nothing surpasses the opportunity to observe a live Hub meeting in action.   In observing Privacy and Information Sharing requirements, the Hub visit experience has been replaced by a soon to be released,  Hub Training Video! This interactive tool offers narrative and discussion segments  profiling the Four Filter Process in a clear and dynamic way!  It features mock scenarios and our Saskatchewan Hub practitioners in leading roles!

How did this happen?

Partnership amongst BPRC and CMPA and the Ontario Peel Region resulted in Saskatchewan being sponsored to deliver onsite Hub training, which presented a unique opportunity to produce a professional video production.  Facilitated by Norm Taylor, this 2-day training event served to shape rich Hub meeting discussions and valuable footage resulting in a professional Hub Training Video to support Hubs here at home, and beyond our Saskatchewan borders.

I PS REMINDER

what’s NEW! what’s NEXT ! Can we include Community Based

Organizations (CBOs) as Hub table members?

We met with the co-chairs of the Interministerial Information Sharing Issues Working Group (ISIWG), and they are in agreement that if the organization is subject to privacy legislation, such as, Legal Authority Freedom of Information and Privacy Act (LAFOIP), they could participate at a Hub table.

However, why we are sharing information is just as important as with whom. Does the CBO have a clear and purposeful function to be at Hub, or would their valuable time and expertise be more meaningfully applied as a resource to the table through a connection to services?

Please discuss your specific community needs with a BPRC Consultant.

You are at a Hub table and a situation introduced is about an individual you know personally, or is a family member. This is bound to happen, particularly in a small community. Please remember ‘Conflict of Interest’ protocol. The best response is to advise the table the person is personally known to you and excuse yourself from the table for the discussion period. If your agency is required, please engage your Hub designate or a colleague.

Stay tuned!Community of Practice

“I really can't recall a program that so universally creates enthusiasm with all who come in contact with it.

The clear consensus from everyone at our meetings with you was; this is innovative, it will work, and the US

needs to participate.”

ESTEVAN/WEYBURN HUB MEDIA EVENT

Working within the Building Partnerships to Reduce Crime approach, Estevan and Weyburn launched the South East Regional Community Mobilization Hub on November 22, 2013.

The Hub meetings alternate between Estevan and Weyburn, covering the corridor between and surrounding communities, with future plans to expand into the rural communities, including First Nations, and this partnership brings together Estevan and Weyburn Police Services, RCMP, Sun Country Health Region, Ministries of Social Services and Corrections and Policing, South East Cornerstone Public School Division and Holy Family Roman Catholic Separate School Division.

Another great Saskatchewan team of folks working together to improve wellness for individuals, families and the community as a whole, which ultimately reduces crime and victimization.

Congrats South East Regional Community Mobilization Steering Committee and Regional Hub on your collaborative efforts!!

BPRC Data System

Provincial Data Analysts have worked diligently at developing a BPRC Data System that now allows for consistent data collection across the province. Recognizing unique community dynamics, the system has been improved to include the use of ‘Study Flags’. These flags allow your Hub to create unique information/subject markers for your Hub reporting needs. You do not have to use this functionality if you don’t need it.  It is an extra tool you can use to track your data.

Please contact John Miller, Data Analyst, Ministry of Justice, for assistance and data system inquiries. (306)[email protected]
