Appropriation. What does that mean? To take exclusive possession of. To set apart for, or

assign to a particular person or use. Appropriation is the act of taking for oneself or for a

particular person or use. So, what are we appropriating, and from whence does it come? The

purpose for this Bible Study has been to become aware of all that Jesus accomplished for us on

the cross. He did it all. He is the Supply Source of all that we need for salvation and abundant

life abundantly. He is the “Storehouse”, for every blessing, for every good and perfect gift, sent

by the Father of Light (James 1:17) James 1:17 (KJV) 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is

from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither

shadow of turning. Well, if Jesus is the Storehouse, how do we get supplies from the

Storehouse for our own use?

We know legally what is ours that has been the purpose for this study. What Jesus HAS

DONE! The RESON He did it. And the BENEFITS FOR US from what He has done. How do we

get it from there, to here (my heart)?

God gave us a pattern in the shape of Joshua. Moses the Lawgiver was dead. It was time to

go into the Promised Land—the one flowing with milk and honey. GOD said: wherever the sole

of your feet shall tread, the land will be yours—for GOD Himself had given them the land. It

took faith to take God at His Word and cross that river, onto the shore. God did the work for

them at Jericho and AI, but thereafter they would have to battle to take ground. God was

faithful to His Word, they did defeat the enemy and take the land. BUT, we are told in scripture

that they “wound down”, “became content”, or weary; and failed to take ALL the territory that

they could have had they persisted. Of course, they could have never crossed the river in the

first place, according to The Word of God, they owned the land legally, but still had not

experimentally, so I guess the little they did gain on the other side is better than nothing. They

still had a piece when they could have had the whole. And oh boy, had they known what

trouble those unconquered people groups would be to their generations, you would think they

would have pressed on—but no. That would require effort that they felt unwilling to meet. Let

somebody else deal with it!

Of course, we know that that is the attitude we sometimes cop. I’m doing a little better than

yesterday and that is good enough for me. Pressing on requires work, and I just don’t feel like it.

“Let somebody else do it”.

Why do we settle for a fraction, when we are promised the whole? It is a personal decision.

When God’s people coexisted with the alien peoples, there was confusion and danger. In fact,

one definition of “curse” is “the lessening of the blessing”. In other words, less than God’s best

is a type of a curse. Who wants to live under a curse when they could enjoy the blessing? Then,

who can comprehend the muddled thinking of ignorance? Perhaps we never knew blessings

were there for us to appropriate!

God wants us restored to our inheritance. That is why He sent Jesus! We are promised

deliverance, holiness and possessions! Now, don’t quip thinking that “possessions” is merely

materialism. Isn’t it a goal to “possess” the Mind of Christ for example? Wouldn’t it be nice to

“possess” good health, a happy marriage, strong godly children, etc.? Will it include material

blessings? Well, He said it. Wasn’t Abraham blessed materially? Aren’t we promised all the

blessings of Deuteronomy 28:1-14? What does it take? Obedience!

The Bible tells us we are to fight the good fight. (1 Timothy 6:12) 1 Timothy 6:12 (KJV) 12

Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast

professed a good profession before many witnesses. Do we? Only you know the answer to that

question. He or she over there may, but we may hold back. Then if he or she prospers do we

congratulate them or condemn them?

The Bible teaches us that we will not claim our inheritance without holiness. So, we see the

link between our actions and our inheritance. Now before we cry: works, works, WORKS.

Remember what James said: “faith without works is dead!”. (James 2:20) James 2:20 (KJV) 20

But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? It is faith that activates the

works, and in this case, works of holiness, which is grace if we by definition describe grace as

God’s Divine action upon the human heart. The process we call sanctification. Sanctification

leading to holiness. So, we see that appropriation is by faith as God works on our hearts to free

us to receive. It is not a mystery. Hebrews 11:6 tells us that God is a Rewarder of those who

seek Him diligently. If we want our reward, we need to seek Him, and seek Him diligently

[constant in effort, attentive and persistent]. This requires adjusted priorities! And what will He

reward us with—what it is that we need!!! Faith comes as we hear the Word of God and the

Word becomes real to us. God will speak to us and meet us at our need.

As we submit to God’s instructions and take God seriously, and do what He tells us we will

receive. As we receive we are experiencing or appropriating what God has done for us. And let

us be grateful. 1 Thessalonians 5:18, says: “in everything give thanks”. Note that does not say

for everything, but in everything. Do not take things for granted! But as we make a habit of

thanking Him in everything, it will transform us. (Note it does not say it will transform the

circumstances), but we will be transformed to meet and/or overcome the circumstances!

Finally, the Word tells us we are to “Seek first the kingdom of God and His Righteousness and all

these things will be added unto us”. (Mt. 6:33)
