I. Coaching Philosophy & GoalsYour child will give the wrestling program hundreds of hours this season and I am very aware that this time is invaluable. We will do our best to make the most of every practice, every meet and every tournament. Our #1 goal this year is help each wrestler grow in wisdom, in ability, and in stature. The physical discipline that your child will experience this year will be an excellent springboard for him/her to learn about the discipline it takes to succeed in life. We will strive to show good sportsmanship in our actions both on and off the mat. Some of the wrestling specific goals for our high school team this year are:

Team FirstAs a wrestling program, we believe in taking pride in ourselves as well as our school. One of the ways this will play out this year is through cleaning up at tournaments. Bulldog wrestlers will be expected to clean up the area we set in as though we were never there. We will also clean areas around where we sat so that we might help the home team clean up their facility. As the season progresses we will look for other opportunities to exhibit prideful acts.

III. Community ServiceAs a member of the community and a future leader/voter in the community, we as a wrestling program will participate in a minimum of one community service activity, which will be determined at a later date.

IV. Athletic Participation PolicyCedartown High School’s athletic participation policy states that if an athlete begins a sport and elects to quit the sport before the season is over then that athlete will not be eligible to begin participating in another athletic activity until the completion of the previous sport’s regular season. Wrestlers will be held to this policy. For high school wrestlers, our regular season begins October 27, 2014 and is over February 3, 2015 (individual area tournament). If a wrestler places in the top four at the area tournament, he/she will proceed to the next weekend (sectionals). If a wrestler places in the top eight at the sectional tournament, he/she will proceed to the next weekend (state tournament). For individuals that qualify for the state tournament, their season will end after the individual state championship competition February 17, 2015. All high school wrestlers will be required to complete the entire season unless released by the head coach.

V. Participation FeeAll sports at Cedartown High School are self-funded. This means that each sport is responsible for generating its own funds for every avenue of the sport (entry fees, travel fees, cleaning supplies, etc…). In stating this, every wrestler will be responsible for participating in fund raising activities (Boston Butts, Banners, Tee Shirt Sales, Car Washes, Washing Powder, etc…) to raise the required funds to operate our program for the 2014-2015 season.

VI. What is the Participation Fee for?The funds will cover the costs for weekend tournament entry fees. The typical tournament entry fee averages from $175-$225. This year will we be traveling to several tournaments (see schedule). The funds will also help cover cleaning supplies for the mats, mat tape, washing powder, and any other miscellaneous items needed throughout the season. The money collected will be spent on the program.

VII. Estimated Program Expenses for 2014-2015 Tournament Entry Fee Estimates: $1875

4

Team FirstTravel Cost Estimates (Hotels): $3000Mat Tape Estimates: $200Cleaning Supply Estimates: $100Banquet & Awards: $800Miscellaneous Expenses: $500

Total: $6475

With the traveling expenses, our yearly expenses will be elevated!

Please help with all the fundraisers that will be offered.

We will be hosting at least two home tournaments this year. I hope to offset some of these expenses with the profits made at these two events from concessions, gate, shirt sales, etc….

Team FirstVIII. Commitment of Wrestlers:

I know that in order for each of you to reach your highest potential and for this team to reach its highest potential there must be great commitment. While this commitment will apply to many different actions over this season, there are some fundamental precepts and conditions that must be accepted initially. These precepts and conditions are included in the following statements:

I want to grow in wisdom, in ability, and in stature. Therefore, I willingly accept the teachings of the school and the coaching staff. I will do my best in my academic endeavors, realizing that I can be successful in the classroom through hard work. I will also seek to build positive relationships with all other students and athletes.

I want to do those things, which are beneficial to my body. Therefore, I will refrain from the use of alcohol and other drugs, including tobacco. I also pledge to treat everyone with respect especially my parents/guardians.

I trust that the Bulldog coaching staff is professional and knowledgeable in regards to wrestling moves, techniques, and conditioning. While there are many different ways to approach the sport, I understand that unity of effort is critical to success. I agree to wrestle with a positive attitude, and I agree to support my teammates fully.

I understand that in order for our team to be successful, we must train diligently during our season. I commit to training hard during our season. I will work hard in sports performance training class (weight lifting) and accept the leadership of the coach assigned to strength, speed, and conditioning development. If my schedule does not allow me to participate in one of these classes, I will weight train on my own and attend any extra practices offered to the team.

I understand that practice is important and paramount to our success in our meets and tournaments this season. I commit to be on time at every practice and not miss any practices unless my academic responsibilities prohibit me to do so in which case I will speak with the coaching staff first. I commit to listen attentively at each practice and try my best to learn new techniques and perfect old ones.

I understand that there are many opportunities for growth this school year and I commit to making the most of each of those opportunities so that I will become the best wrestler I can be.

I understand that this is a team sport first and others rely on me being at practices, meets, and tournaments. I WILL NOT QUIT on my teammates, and I WILL BE ACCOUNTABLE for my actions.

Team FirstIX. Expectations of Parents

Sometimes coaches are not blessed with a great group of parents to work with, but we as a wrestling community anticipate our parents to be the exception. I would like for each and every one of you to contribute to the needs of the program. There will be several opportunities for you to help the teams this year and I want to thank you ahead of time for the time you will devote to help your child and our program. Some of the things I expect from our parents are:

Good Sportsmanship: If you have never experienced a high school/junior high wrestling match then get ready for some excitement! Please feel free to scream as loud as you can for our wrestlers as you encourage them on to victory, but please refrain from voicing any objections to the referee’s decisions. It is my job to make sure that the match is run fairly and the GHSA has a clearly defined way for me to do this. There will be times when you and I will not agree with a call made by the official but we must refrain from negative outbursts. If you as a fan can make sure that all of your actions are positive then you will aid me in molding these young men to exhibit good sportsmanship in all they do.

Trust the Bulldog coaching staff to handle matters in a professional manner. Help the Bulldog coaching staff develop these wrestlers into responsible adults by making sure

they attend every practice and by making sure they understand the consequences for their actions; ACCOUNTABILITY

If you have a concern with a coach, address the concern in a private manner. Be an active member in your child’s education, check grades frequently on power school. Not required, but I would like for every parent to be an active member of the Cedartown Matdawgs

Booster Club. Participate in wrestling fundraisers. Support the Wrestling program (HS, MS, USA) Pick your child up on time from meets, tournaments, and practices. Volunteer in the concession stand for at least one home meet. We will also need several parents to volunteer at the tables (scoring and time keeping) at our home

meets– you will get all the training you will need from the coaching staff. MOST IMPORTANTLY: Support your athlete(s) by being present at meets and

tournaments to cheer for him/her and his/her teammates. You may not realize it, but your child values your support and praise far more than mine or that of his/her teammates.

Team FirstX. Online Sportsmanship

I want to strongly discourage our wrestlers from participating in athletic chat rooms (as well as posting negatively on Facebook, Twitter, etc.). These sites frequently become spaces where negative comments about specific schools, coaches, and/or wrestlers are regularly posted. Unfortunately, the anonymity that such a chat room allows or encourages people to publish things, however hurtful, that they would otherwise not say. It will not accomplish anything positive and may hurt someone beyond a level we can imagine.

XI. Academic RequirementsStudents who fail to meet academic eligibility requirements at the end of the second semester are not eligible to tryout for, or practice with, school teams and may not compete in interscholastic contests prior to the start of the next school year unless they have obtained eligibility during summer school. In order for all students to practice or try out they must be academically eligible. Passing in all GHSA member schools is a grade of seventy (70).

Students must be “on track” for graduation according to the following criteria:(a) First year students (entering 9th grade) are eligible academically. At the start of the second semester the students must have passed courses carrying at least 2.5 Carnegie units in the previous semester in order to participate.(b) Second year students must have accumulated five (5) total Carnegie units in the first year and passed courses carrying at least 2.5 Carnegie units in the previous semester.(c) Third year students must have accumulated eleven (11) total Carnegie units in the first and second years, and passed at least courses carrying at least 2.5 Carnegie units in the previous semester.(d) Fourth year students must have accumulated seventeen (17) Carnegie units in the first three years, and passed courses carrying at least 2.5 Carnegie units in the previous semester.

Loss of EligibilityStudents assigned to an alternative school or on out-of-school suspension for disciplinary reasons, or adjudicated to YDC, lose their eligibility. Suspension is considered to have ended when the student is physically readmitted to the classroom.

XII. PracticesALL PRACTICES ARE REQUIRED. The purpose of wrestling practice is to increase skill, improve endurance and strength, and build team unity. All wrestlers should dress out in the boys’ locker room if male or the girls’ locker room if female and give their valuables to a member of the coaching staff. The locker room will be locked, but we have several teams that use this space so please lock up your items or give them to a coach for safekeeping. Wrestlers should be in the practice room no later than 10 minutes before practice begins. Wrestlers will be asked to help sanitize (mop) the mats from time to time to prevent the spread of any disease. Wrestlers late to practice will be on mopping duty and they will also be required to participate in extra conditioning activities . Missing practice is like missing class; that time has to be made up.

High School: Monday – Friday (unless we have a meet) SHOWER Before You Leave Practice! 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM = Practice (Drill, Technique, & Live)

Middle School: Monday – Friday (unless we have a meet)4:00 – 6:00 = Practice (Drill, Technique, Live, & Conditioning/Weights) – Pick up around 6:20-6:30. After practice all wrestlers will shower. Please bring clean clothes, towels, shampoo, soap etc…

XIII. Holiday PracticesIt is important that we have adequate practice time even over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. I try to communicate this to you before the season begins by putting the practices and holiday practice times in this handbook. I believe the time we spend at practice is very important and we need to keep our momentum throughout the season, which involves having practice during holiday times. Fall and Spring sports conflict with other holidays but the Winter sports must contend with the two big ones for traveling, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Holiday practices are mandatory for varsity wrestlers and all other wrestlers should attend as many as possible. Please understand this before you agree to be part of the Bulldog’s Wrestling Program. If you will be out of town for some reason your parent MUST call a member of the coaching staff.

CHS & CMS Holiday Practice Schedule

Please see the attached schedule.

XIV. Practice & Travel Apparel RequirementsAll wrestlers are expected to have their own apparel “Bulldog Wrestling” T-shirts or sweatshirts, sweatpants or shorts, and wear that apparel at every practice along with their own headgear and own wrestling shoes. Kneepads are optional. Wrestlers should bring their gear every day along with a pair of tennis shoes for conditioning. Showering after every practice is mandatory and will be done before the

9

Team Firstwrestler is dismissed from practice. When we travel to a meet, every wrestler will be required to wear “Bulldog Wrestling” apparel. No hats will be allowed once we exit the bus to enter the facility where the competition will be held. XV. Team Cleanliness/Health

With the wrestling season upon us, here is an important reminder to everyone about basic hygiene tips that can protect our team and keep them healthy throughout the season. The incidence of skin conditions is becoming more common in all sports. In wrestling, athletes are not allowed to compete when they have a skin condition whereas in many other sports they still can. Since wrestling is a "skin-to-skin" contact sport, cleanliness & hygiene are essential to maintain team health & wellness. Parents -- please read & discuss the information in this book with your wrestler and follow these suggestions closely. Hygiene & Showering Keep your hands & body clean by scrubbing "vigorously" after each practice with

"Dial" antibacterial soap. Check your skin daily while showering & tell your parents if there are sores anywhere on your skin. Keep any cuts and scrapes clean and covered with a bandage until healed. Watch the healing process to ensure there is not increased redness, warmth, enlargement/swelling

or discharge from the sore. When in doubt- see your doctor immediately! Avoid contact with other people’s wounds or bandages. Clothing & Personal Items Ensure that all practice clothing is washed after each practice - no exceptions! Wash your tights, singlet & warm-up clothes after every meet. This is not optional!! Avoid sharing personal items such as TOWELS, headgear, or clothing. Wipe down your headgear & shoes regularly with a Clorox/Water solution (1tsp Clorox diluted in

1cup of fresh tap water).

Skin InfectionsCommon wrestler skin problems include: Fungal infections (ringworm), Viral infections (molluscom) & Bacterial infections (Staph), or Contact Dermatitis. Staphylococcus aureus (Staf-lo-coc-cus aw-ree-us (staph) is a germ that often lives in the noses and on the skin and spreads from person to person on contaminated hands, skin, and objects. Most infections caused by staph are skin infections, but staph can also cause more serious infections such as blood and joint infections and pneumonia. Some staph called MRSA (Methicillin-Resistant Staph aureus) cannot be killed by certain antibiotics – called beta lactams – which are commonly used to treat staph. If you think you have contracted a skin infection, please let the coaches know and see your physician immediately.

What does a Staph or MRSA Infection Look Like?Staph bacteria, including MRSA, can cause skin infections that may look like a pimple or boil and may be red, swollen, painful, or have pus or other drainage

10

Team First

What to do if you have a Skin Infection? Cover your wound. Keep wounds that are draining or have pus covered with clean, dry bandages. Follow your healthcare provider’s instructions on proper care of the wound. Pus from infected wounds can contain staph. So keeping the infection covered will help prevent the spread to others. Bandages or tape can be thrown away with the regular trash. Wash your hands. You, your family, and others in close contact should wash their hands often with soap and warm water. You can use an alcohol hand gel when soap and water are not available. This is especially important to do after changing the bandage or touching the infected wound. Do not share personal items. Avoid sharing personal items such as towels, washcloths, razors, clothing, or uniforms that may have had contact with the infected wound or bandage. Wash soiled sheets, towels, and clothes with water and laundry detergent. Dry clothes in a hot dryer, rather than air-drying. This also helps kill bacteria in clothes. Please send in 1 towel to be used during the season. Coaches will wash these daily to have clean ones for the next day. At wrestling meets, your coaches will be providing disposable wipes for wrestlers to wipe down exposed skin after every match they wrestle. Please send in 2 cans of disposable wipes so that we can deter anything we might pick up on opponents mats. Your coaches are constantly disinfecting the mats for your protection between & after practices & matches.

Hair and Nails: Wrestlers are required to have nails trimmed before practice and competition. Wrestlers are also required to have the appropriate hair cut before competition. The hair must be above the eyebrows and above the earlobes.

XVI. Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Middle School LevelsIf your child is in the 6th- 8th grade then he/she will be wrestling on the Middle School team this year. If your child is in 8th grade, he/she will be wrestling in JV competitions; therefore, he/she must participate in the hydration assessment. If your child is in grades 9-12 then he/she will wrestle either on the JV squad or Varsity squad. In wrestling there are 14 high school and 20 middle school weight classes, and we are allowed to enter one wrestler in each weight class. In practice we determine the best wrestler in each weight class and those wrestlers make up the varsity squad for that particular match. In order to determine the best wrestler in each weight class we may hold wrestle-offs a day or two before each match. The JV team provides needed depth for our varsity, and we consider them as much of the team as any varsity member. You will notice several JV tournaments on the schedule this season to give our JV wrestlers more mat time. Both squads practice together and each wrestler is a valuable member of the team. We as coaches reserve the right to change the line-up at anytime for the benefit of the team.

XVII. Weigh-Ins

11

Team FirstBefore each match or tournament we are required by the GHSA to hold weigh-ins for our wrestlers. On the day of the match the varsity and junior varsity will weigh-in at 7:00 AM in a designated location (Coach Hartline will tell you where to be. If you are late or do not show up to weigh in, you will not wrestle). If there is a change in weigh-ins the coach will get word through the captains of that change. For tournaments we must weigh in at the tournament site a few hours before the tournament begins for some and others we will weigh in at school that morning.

XVIII.Weight ClassesThe following are the 14 weight classes in high school wrestling: 106, 113, 120, 126, 132, 138, 145, 152, 160, 170, 182, 195, 220, 285

In the Middle School there are 20 weight classes:70, 75, 80, 85, 90, 95, 103, 112, 118, 125, 132, 139, 145, 152, 160, 170, 185, 200, 220, 285

In order for a wrestler to compete at a particular weight class he/she must be at or below that weight but not more than one weight class below. For example, if a wrestler weighs in at 136 lbs. he/she has the option of wrestling at 140 or 145 lbs. In high school, a wrestler must certify at a weight by January 31st. High school wrestlers also are allowed +2 lbs on December 25 th and +1 lb on February 1 st (growth allowance) but cannot use these extra pounds to certify at a lower weight class.

XIX. Weight Certification – High School and 8th GradersWeight certification is to establish the lowest allowable wrestling weight based on 7% body fat. Our team will be assessed at Georgia Northwestern Technical College on October ??, 2014. The technician will assess hydration levels, height, weight, and body fat. When our team is assessed, we will be able to enter our wrestler’s weights on the National Wrestling Coaches Association web site which will track each of you throughout the season. A wrestler may not lose more than 1.5% of their body weight each week and may not fall below 7% body fat. If you are already below 7% body fat, a physician’s clearance sheet must be completed by your physician and sent in to the GHSA for approval before you may compete. We will have a printout for each meet and tournament to share with our opponents showing that you in fact were assessed and that you are at the correct weight class. If you miss this certification you will have to make it up at a later date.

This year the team will travel for the hydration and weight certification tests on 11/11/14. Please make sure that you are on the bus at the appropriate time. With tournaments coming up the following weekend, it is mandated by the state that the hydration test be passed and entered into the states weight management system for a wrestler to be eligible to wrestle.

XXI. Competitions Dual Meets

i. During our season we will wrestle in dual meets (Team A v. Team B). Dual meets will last anywhere from 45 to 90 minutes; the more equally we match up the longer the match lasts. For our away meets we will be taking a bus from school and returning on the bus after the meet. You can your pick son/daughter up at the school when we return. We leave as a team and return as a team. I require that all of the wrestlers stay for the whole meet. I would appreciate it if you would honor this request. Those that would leave our team need to think seriously about being on a team in the first place. On the attached schedule you will see the dates, locations, and times for our matches.

ii. A dual team match is made up of 14 (or 18-19) individual matches. The first match is determined by a random drawing by the referee. Once the first match is determined the rest of the matches will follow in order of weight by ascending order. Individual scoring is kept for each match and at the end of each match team points are awarded.

Tournamentsi. Both the middle school and high school teams are entered in several tournaments this year.

Each tournament has a little different set-up but for the most part they are double

13

Team Firstelimination individual tournaments. This means your son/daughter will be guaranteed two matches and will continue to wrestle through the tournament until he/she either places in the top 4 or loses his second match. We are also entered in several dual meet tournaments, which are very similar to a dual meet but we will wrestle as a team four or five times during the tournament. Even if he/she is out of the tournament early in the competition, every wrestler must stay to cheer on his/her teammates until the completion of wrestling and the awarding of medals and trophies. Team points are kept and trophies are handed out at the end of the tournament. It is our goal to place first in each tournament and they will want to be there to accept the trophy as a team.

Home Meetsi. For home meets all wrestlers will be expected to be in the locker room at 4:00 to prepare

for the match. For away meets we will be leaving at different times, and we will communicate those times to you as we approach each meet. After each home meet, it will be the responsibility of the whole team to take down and clean up the gym. No wrestler will be permitted to leave until the job is completed. If we all work together, we can usually finish the task in about 30 minutes.

XXII.Lettering

One of the goals that the high school wrestlers will be working toward this year is a varsity letter. The minimum requirement to earn a varsity letter is 10 varsity wins. Varsity forfeits count as ½ of a win toward that goal. Along with the 10 wins a wrestler must be present for every practice, every meet, and every tournament regardless if he/she is injured. A junior varsity wrestler who has spent two seasons on the JV can also letter after the summer wrestling camp of his/her second full year.

Mat managers will have the opportunity to letter as well. They are required to attend 90% of the practices and 100% of the meets. Failure to do so will result in not lettering.

XXIII. Individual ScoringTakedown: 2 pts – when a wrestler gets control and on top of his opponent from the neutral position or standing position.Escape: 1 pt – getting out from underneath to a standing, neutral position facing the opponent.

Reversal: 2 pts – getting out from under an opponent and gaining control by getting on top.

Near Fall: 2 pts – holding an opponent’s shoulders within about 4” or at an angle of 45 degrees or less for 2 sec. 3 pts – same as above but holding your opponent for 5 or more seconds.
