He was in a hurry because he didn’t want to be late so he started to run up the steps. He didn’t see they were icy, so he slipped and fell.He was lucky thatone of his school mates was just behind him. He informed the headmaster immediately and two teachers took George straight to hospital. He had an X-ray and the doctors told him his right leg was broken. Now it is in plaster and George is not allowed to move it. He has been in hospital for five days now.The doctors and nurses have been very kind and a lot of friends have visited him, but he is getting bored and thinks the food there is awful so he is looking forward to going back home and to school again.

READING

K.a) Leggi l’articolo velocemente per una comprensione globale e indica l’affermazione che ne sintetizza il contenuto.1. The article is about a shepherd and his dogs.2. The article is about the relationship between humans and dogs.

A LOVE STORYOur Bond with DogsRoddy MacDiarmid, 57, lifelong shepherd, surveys the Scottish Highlands from a ridge overlooking Loch Fyne and the little valley town Cairndow. Black-faced lambs and ewes by the hundred dot the green hillsides below. His Border Collies, Mirk and Dot, trot faithfully behind.“Everywhere you see,” says MacDiarmid, “I have gathered sheep. And I can tell you this: You cannot gather sheep from these hills without dogs. Never could and never will; never, never, never!” MacDiarmid’s words are a comfort to those of us who keep dogs but sometimes wonder why. It’s good to know that sometimes dogs remain absolutely, undeniably essential to man’s work while we happily wander about with our furry friends, feeding them, walking them, scooping their droppings, showering them with affection, taking them to the vet at thefirst glimmer of trouble. We occasionally get nipped or barked at in return, but more frequently we are rewarded with a lick on the hand or a wagging tail.Dogs and people, people and dogs. It’s a love story so old no one knowshow and when the domestic relationship with dogs started. Maybe 14,000 years ago, maybe even before. Dogs are not just our proverbial best friends in the animal world but probably our oldest. They evolved from wolves long ago, found a home alongside humans before history could record it, and never left.By the fourth millennium B.C. Egyptian rock and pottery drawings show hounds hunting with men, driving game into nets. Then, as now, feral dogs roamed city streets, stealing food from people returning from market. Thousands of years later dogs can still be trouble. From 1979 to 1998 more than 300 people in the United States were killed in dog attacks. Most were children. In 1994 an estimated 4.7 million Americans were bitten, 6,000 of them hospitalized.Today there are about 68 million dogs in the United States alone, one for every four people. And while a few still work for their daily food, most of them get it

for free. “99.9% of them do nothing but lie around the house, bark, and eat,” says contemporary Stephen Budiasky. His book The Truth About Dogs suggests that dogs get a lot more from the relationship than humans get back.

b) Rileggi l’articolo più attentamente e indica se le affermazioni sono vere (T) o false (F).

THE ROAD PROTESTERSReclaim the streets! There are dancers gyrating in the slow lane, sunbathers lying on the hard shoulder, and parents encouraging children to play in the middle of the road. Thousands of people have taken over the M41 in West London and they are having a wild time. They have also brought the city’s traffic to a complete halt, and the drivers are furious. The M41 protest is the latest in a series of actions that have been arranged by the pressure group “Reclaim The Streets” against cars and traffic. It began with a blockade of Camden High Street in north London a few years ago and has since been followed by similar blockades of roads across the country. But this is the first time RTS has disrupted a major motorway. It marks a dramatic escalationin the campaign. So what comes next? A party on the runway at Heathrow Airport?“Streets, once the open forum of daily life, are now the open sewers of car culture”, says one. “The time we spend in traffic jams is out of all proportion to the benefits that cars were supposed to bring”, says another. Fiona Grey, a 30-year-old protester quotes the radical philosopher Ivan Illich who produced some startling figures based on American driving habits. Illich added up the amount of hours American drivers spend on their cars, not just the time behind the wheel but the time spent working to earn the money to pay for the car’s petrol, its tax, its maintenance, insurance, tolls and for the car itself. Based on these figures American drivers travel at the equivalent of three-and-a-half miles an hour, which is just about the same as walking pace. “We get all this pollution, noise, waste for nothing”, says Fiona. “Imagine our cities without traffic”, says one road movement leaflet. “Roundabouts could become public forums, planted with trees and gurgling with fountains. Roads would become meeting places. Streets would be filled with life.”

On the RTS home page of the Internet, you can find other reasons why the “great car economy” doesn’t make sense. “In 1969, 90 percent of children made their own way to school. Now the figure is 9 percent. It’s too dangerous to let the kids go on their own because of the traffic.” “Governments claim that cars and roads are good for the economy, but all they do is consume our wealth. Cars and roads cause unbelievable destruction.”It is hard to disagree with their logic. Cars have certainly brought many problems to the modern world. But they have also brought benefits as well, and they are so much part of modern life that it is difficult to imagine living without them. The idea of turning roundabouts into fountains might be pleasant, but it is totally unrealistic. At the street party on the motorway a few protesters had come armed with pneumatic drills. They have bored holes in the motorway and planted them with trees.Unfortunately, within an hour of the protesters going home those tender young trees had been squashed under the wheels of a lorry. All the same, one couldn’t help wondering what it would have been like if the protest had lasted longer.
