AMBASCIATORE FABRIZIO MARCELLI AMBASSADOR OF ITALY

It is my great pleasure to present another edition of The Cinema Italiano Festival, organised by Renee Mark and Paolo Rotondo. This fourth year programme is richer, more diverse and will reach audiences in 16 cities throughout New Zealand across 10 months, with a great selection of comedies, dramas, documentaries and cherished classics.

The Festival provides yet another great opportunity to strengthen the cultural relationship between Italy and New Zealand, while

fostering, through films, a deeper understanding of the cultural, linguistic and socio-political context we live in, engaging audiences with the Italian society, lifestyle and traditions. This is why I am glad the Embassy of Italy in Wellington could support it, in keeping with our role of advocate for Italian Culture on this side of the world.

I hope all lovers of Italian films will take advantage of this unique chance, buona visione!

Ambassador Fabrizio Marcelli

MESSAGGIO FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

I believe cinema can be a transformative artform, it certainly has been for me. Cinema has been a part of most of our lives for as long as we can remember.

Our perception of the past, the present and the future has so often been shaped by the films we have seen. Living so far from Italy, my connection to my culture has been nurtured and maintained through the images, ideas and themes I have seen on the silver screen. I hope to curate this Festival in such a way as to accurately, or at least thoughtfully, represent Italian culture, to keep me connected. In order to represent the complexity of Italian culture through Cinema, I strive to create a Festival that is rich, varied, interesting, appealing, accessible and also challenging. Now that we screen the Festival in 16 different centres, we hope to truly become an important part of New Zealand’s cultural landscape.

Paolo Rotondo – Artistic Director

La Famiglia è il Centro di Noi / Family is at the Heart of Us

Chi si volta, è chi si gira, sempre a casa va finire

No matter where you go, or which way you turn, you will always end up at home

For millennia, ‘family’ has been the most important social construct in Italian society. Even across such diverse cultural regional

differences, or up through the stratified social orders, family has been central to Italian culture. This year, the selection is profoundly infused with the myriad manifestations of how family shapes everything in Italy. Without exception, every film in the Festival this year, has in some aspect, family at the centre of it. It is perhaps my own perspective, or age and stage, that has

allowed me to harvest this theme from so many films. I believe that the attitudes and values around family remain one of the great cultural assets of Italian society. The curation this year, is a wonderful exploration of ‘famiglia’ in so many different ways.

I cannot imagine a more prestigious ensemble cast in contemporary Italian cinema, all depicting one colourful family. The occasion is the 50th wedding anniversary celebration of the grandparents of a large Southern Italian family. Parents, children, cousins, brothers, aunties, uncles and in-laws gather on the gorgeous island of Ischia in the Bay of Naples. Great laughs, family sing-alongs, wonderful meals and burgeoning romances soon begin to reveal hidden complex layers. As bad weather traps them on the island, the fun begins to give way to ancient, unresolved tensions and new dramatic undercurrents. The Italian title loosely translated as ‘Everything is fine at home’, perfectly encapsulates the irony, drama and humour in this beautifully crafted film. Director, Gabriele Muccino (Perfect Strangers CIF17), is certainly one of the most exciting Directors in Italian cinema right now. Muccino’s balance of this impressive ensemble is delicate, effortless and deftly handled. Entertaining, intelligent and gorgeous, I really loved this film because it rings true to the joy and pain that families bring us. It resonated with me even more because I used to holiday on the Island of Ischia when I was a child.Paolo Rotondo, Artistic DirectorFrom the writer of 2016 Cinema Italiano Festival NZ highlight Perfect Strangers. An enviable assemblage of Italy’s finest talent including Pierfrancesco Favino (The Confessions CIF17, Wife & Husband CIF18), Stefano Accorsi (Italian Race CIF17) and screen icon Stefania Sandrelli (The Conformist CIF16).

Beloved by audiences and critics at Cannes (where it was awarded Best Screenplay), Alice Rohrwacher’s beautiful, much-anticipated new film is a beguiling allegory of love, loss and compassion exploring the troubled soul of Italy. It is summer at Inviolata, an isolated rural estate, where an extended family of tobacco farmers toil under the rule of a domineering Marchesa, and where the handsome and hard-working Lazzaro (captivating newcomer Adriano Tardiolo), a young man imbued with a saint-like innocence, is alternately adored and taken advantage of. When the Marchesa’s self-absorbed son, Tancredi (Luca Chikovani) first visits the fields, he senses an opportunity, and embroils Lazzaro in an audacious plan to swindle his mother.Channelling the spirit of Pasolini, Rohrwacher’s fascinating tale casts an ethereal, wondrous spell, and confirms her status as one of the most inventive and compelling voices in contemporary Italian cinema.Professor Alfio Leotta, Senior Lecturer in Film, Theatre and Media Studies, Victoria University

The Last Prosecco is a sparkling comedic mystery adapted from Fulvio Ervas’ eponymous novel, set amidst the competitive Prosecco business in the Veneto region. There, an awkward detective (Giuseppe Battiston, Perfect Strangers CIF17), investigates the mysterious death of a gallant Count. On the rolling hills where Prosecco grapes are grown, the dashing, opinionated Count Ancillotto – as liberal in his criticism of a nearby factory as he is proud of his family’s heritage of making the finest Prosecco – dies. But the motives are puzzling, and the mystery deepens when a couple of the Count’s enemies are killed. The trail leads the detective to a fight for the protection of the area involving gravediggers, innkeepers and a secretive Prosecco club. With a strong environmental message, this bubbly mystery captures the conflict between profit and quality.Renee Mark, Festival Director

The award-winning crime thriller from internationally-heralded writer/director Matteo Garrone (Gomorrah), Dogman is a hugely compelling, based-on-fact tale of a gentle dog lover driven to take a stand against a local bully. In a dilapidated Neapolitan suburb, the pint-sized, mild-mannered Marcello (Marcello Fonte) runs the dog-grooming business of the film’s title, caring for the neighbourhood pooches, and raising his young daughter, Sofia, for whom he would do anything. But he is in thrall to one of his customers, Simone (Edoardo Pesce, Fortunata CIF18) a petty criminal and former boxer who throws his substantial bulk around this tight-knit community at every opportunity. Marcello soon becomes swept up in a criminal plan he wants nothing to do with.Meticulously directed and filmed, and entirely sympathetic to its four-legged cast-members (none of whom are harmed), Garrone’s bravura noir is also impeccably performed, with Marcello Fonte’s extraordinary performance awarded Best Actor at Cannes. The entrancing art, music, and architecture of the city of Naples form a sumptuous backdrop for this mystery-shrouded thriller from Ferzan Ozpetek.Giovanna Mezzogiorno stars as Adriana, an esteemed medical examiner who meets a handsome younger man, Andrea (Alessandro Borghi, I was a Dreamer CIF18) during a Neapolitan ceremony involving femminielli at her eccentric aunt’s garish apartment. They hit it off immediately, though their romance is curtailed when Andrea later stands her up and then disappears. So begins a gripping metaphysical murder mystery, in which Naples becomes a shadowy, mysterious labyrinth of desire and memory. Everything that is Naples is delivered to us – superstition and truth, ancient and modern, insanity and sanity, veiled and unveiled. Everything is covered and everything is absolutely naked. We are told early-on in this film that “no one likes too much truth” and that seems to be the scaffolding upon which the film is constructed. Naples is the character as much as Adriana. She is a sexy and dangerous siren that pulls you in. This film made me love my city more than I already do and made me look at beauty once again with a different eye. Anything that refreshes your ‘factory settings’ on beauty and passion is sure to be worth the watch. Carla Rotondo, Ondazzurra Radio Presenter

This sweet road trip film revolves around Adele, a 25-year-old girl with Asperger’s syndrome, who has never known her father and has always lived under the protective wing of her mother Margherita. The sudden death of Adele’s mother brings Adele and her biological father, Aldo together. On the way to drop off Adele to relatives, who don’t actually want her, Aldo’s glacial self-centred heart warms. Adele is sweet, different and so very unique, that it is impossible not to want to look after her.“You are afraid of living not dying” … sums up her insight into Aldo’s character. A wonderfully light-hearted “on the road journey” that reminds you of how fragile, unbearable and different we all are. Normality is a concept challenged by this film, humanity and kindness is reassessed. With more than 1.3 million admissions at the Italian Box Office, Blessed Madness is the latest hit comedy from Carlo Verdone, the much loved Roman actor and director who is considered a modern day Alberto Sordi. The sacred, profane, ancient and modern, meld together in Verdone’s uproarious comedy. Nearly forty years after his debut, Verdone continues to make Italians giggle at their own virtues and laugh at their vices with his peculiar ‘Roman’ vision of Italy. He is perhaps the most well-known proponent of a particularly farcical, yet cynical Roman-style of comedy. Verdone plays Guiglielmo, a middle-aged man in charge of a business that sees him working between secret Vatican opulence and downtown Rome. On the surface, Guiglielmo leads a successful if monotonous life. His comfortable world is suddenly turned upside-down when glamorous, young Luna appears on the scene like a dark angel. It’s as if he has a mid-life crisis unwillingly thrust upon him. Like so many men his age, he will have to reckon with technology and transgression and the challenges of a fast-changing world. Once again, Verdone offers his audiences often unseen corners of the Eternal City, without ever forgetting that the dark and holy sides of Rome live together in a fragile harmony.Carlo Tondelli

In this film, the celebration of spectacular, rural landscapes and the respect of the authentic Tuscan culinary traditions become a powerful metaphor of the need to follow the heart rather than fashionable trends.Dr. Alfio Leotta, Senior Lecturer, Film Programme at Victoria University of Wellington

Italian star Edoardo Leo (Perfect Strangers CIF17) co-writes and Venice Film Festival award-winner Alessandro Aronadio directs this standout comedy about the power of believing – in yourself!Just Believe follows Massimo Alberti (Leo), the owner of the “Miracolo Italiano” a bed and breakfast now reduced to a dilapidated building. Too few customers and too many taxes. One day, Massimo has an epiphany: in order to survive, he has to transform the B&B into a place of worship – where he will host tourists in exchange for a donation. After trying and failing to get into the more or less restricted circles of Catholicism, Judaism and Islam in a series of hilarious meetings, Massimo decides to create his own religion.Assisted by his accountant sister Adriana (Margherita Buy, Mia Madre CIF17) and his ex-wife’s quasi-guru boyfriend Marco (Giuseppe Battiston, The Last Prosecco CIF19, Perfect Strangers CIF17) “Selfism / Ionismo” is born. The first religion that puts the “I” at the centre of the universe, and of course absolves all taxes. Just Believe pushes the boundaries and risks offending the religious sensibility of some. Yet it also offers a politically incorrect parody of the messianic rhetoric of certain movements that nowadays, are mostly expressed through new social channels. Will you “have no God but yourself” by the end of the story as well?Matteo Telara, Italian Language Teacher, Dante Alighieri Auckland

Is it acceptable to swindle the state when the state swindles you? This is the doubt that grips Claudia (Miriam Leone, At War for Love CIF18) a young art restorer who manages to make ends meet thanks to her Nonna/Grandma’s pension. When her Nonna suddenly passes away, bankruptcy seems to be looming, so Claudia, with the complicity of her staff, “freezes” her grandma so she can continue to collect her pension. Just when the solution to Claudia’s problems seems finally close, Simone Recchia (Fabio De Luigi It’s All About Karma CIF18), the most incorruptible and clumsiest officer in the Tax Police turns up. Amidst ingenious deceptions, disguises and misunderstandings, the young art restorer’s scam will begin to melt like a frozen grandmother in the sun.

Director: Michela AndreozziCast: Claudia Gerini, Chiara Mastalli, Stefano Fresi, Michela AndreozziCountry: Italy, 2017Genre: Comedy Rating: M Duration: 90mins Language: Italian with English SubtitlesBrought to you by: Edit

The dynamic Michaela Andreozzi is both Director and actor in this highly entertaining and cleverly thoughtful comedy. Michaela plays Tina, a woman at an age when she feels her body-clock ticking, but alas she can’t seem to get pregnant. Her sister Livia, on the other hand, has chosen not to have children and instead dedicates herself to her career as a concert violinist. When Tina’s gynaecologist suggests her sister Livia become a surrogate and carry her child, a chain of highly comical events are unleashed. Although entertainment is at the centre of this film’s creed, it brilliantly raises many salient questions around family, womanhood, careers and maternity. Andreozzi brilliantly balances hilarious situational comedy with poignant thematic topics. The result is a fresh and contemporary comedy about rather delicate topics. Italy has traditionally been quite conservative (at least on the surface) in its views to family. This film gently nudges the discourse with an accomplished charm.Paolo Rotondo, Artistic Director

Inspired by the Golden Age of Italian comedy, Ricchi di Fantasia / Dreamfools is the story of unlucky ‘losers’ dreaming of a lucky life, even if it seems impossible.Co-written with Fabio Bonifacci and with Sergio Castellitto and Sabrina Ferilli in the lead roles – it tells the story of a ‘prankster’ who himself becomes victim to a prank and turns his life upside-down in the erroneous belief that he has won the Lottery. He quits his job and starts a hilarious journey from the outskirts of Rome to Puglia (together with his lover Sabrina, and some of their family) following the dream of an improbable new beginning.Simple people, forced to deal with everyday problems, Sergio and Sabrina bring to life a couple of rib-tickling characters in a tale that is well-anchored in the difficulties Italians have experienced in recent years.Matteo Telara, Italian Language Teacher, Dante Alighieri Auckland

Director: Federico FelliniCast: Marcello Mastroianni, Claudia Cardinale, Anouk Aimee, Sandra Milo, Rossella Falk, Barbara Steele Country: Italy, 1963Genre: Classic, Drama, ComedyRating: PGDuration: 138minsLanguage: Italian with English Subtitles Brought to you by: Peroni

I first saw this film nearly thirty years ago and it changed forever how I viewed cinema. It is no exaggeration for me to say “I love this film”. This is my favourite Fellini film. The greatest asset of this film is not merely its soaring imagination, with possibly the most renowned opening sequence in film history. But its true power is its astonishing and beguiling honesty. On the surface, Marcello Mastroianni plays a charming, charismatic, if narcissistic Film Director with writers block who is wildly entertaining and of course impossibly cool. But, underneath the ‘spectacle’ we actually become truly close to the psyche of Mastroianni’s Guido. The autobiographical nature of this film is impossible to ignore. Fellini is fearless, sharing his foibles, pre-occupations and sins without ever moralising. The aesthetics of this film are impeccable and timeless in stunning high-contrast black and white, while Nino Rota’s score is among the most memorable in film history. Fellini’s capacity for naughtiness, charm and beauty reach their greatest peak here. The title 8 ½ refers to the fact that Federico Fellini had made 8 feature films and 1 short film until this point. Trust me, this is, without question a true timeless classic.Paolo Rotondo, Artistic DirectorWinner Best Foreign Language Film, Best Costume, Academy Awards 1963 Winner Best Foreign Language Film, New York Film Critics Circle 1963 Winner Best Director, Best Producer, Best Original Screenplay, Best Music, Best Cinematography, Best Supporting Actress, Italian National Syndicate of Film Journalists 1963 Winner The Grand Prize, Saint Vincent Film Festival 1964 Winner The Grand Prize, 3rd Moscow International Film Festival 1963

Director: Federico FelliniCast: Anna Magnani, Marcello Mastroianni, Alberto Sordi, Gore Vidal, Federico Fellini, Peter Gonzales, Fiona Florence, Pia De Doses, Renato Giovannoli Country: Italy, 1972Genre: Comedy / Drama Rating: 18Duration: 120minsLanguage: Italian with English SubtitlesBrought to you by: Next Technology

Federico Fellini’s wildly imaginative homage to the ‘Eternal City’ is outrageous, picaresque and preposterous while at the same time it is somehow truly authentic. In Italy’s post-war economic boom, Rome rebuilt, grew and modernised but Fellini celebrates how the people remained the same; ancient, full of passion, marked by contradictions and brimming with humanity. Fellini’s personal vision of Rome is sacred and base; he is full of love, indignation, awe and puzzlement at the great city. Indescribably well-crafted scenes capture the beauty, chaos and true character of the city in a way that I doubt we will see again on screen. The narrative and the autobiographical references seem incidental. The true protagonist of this story is Rome itself, and time is the unrelenting antagonist. The scenes of the destruction of frescoes are profoundly original and moving, while the satire of the Vatican’s conceitedness is perfectly pitched and could only be Roman. It is hard to imagine a film more original and imaginative, dedicated to one place. Second only to being in Rome itself is the experience of watching this film. This is a cinematic event, visceral, immersive, crazy and truly unique.Paolo Rotondo, Artistic Director

Daniele De Michele, aka Don Pasta (a nickname he earned while working in Paris as a D.J and after the shows he would cook pasta for the staff), chef and ‘food activist’, is the Director of this documentary, which premiered at the 2018 Venice Film Festival. I Villani follows the lives of four individuals as they discuss agriculture, fishing, farming, cheese-making and family relationships, exploring their connection to the land, the history of the place where they were born and their slowly disappearing way of life.Their daily lives, respectful of the products of the land and the sea, of the natural cycles of the environment, prove that the key to reviving Italian cuisine and to ensuring old traditions survive in modern society, is to share information between generations.A genuine, fascinating snapshot that reminds us how traditions like these – working-class and peasant culinary traditions, our grandparents’ legacies – cannot be left to fade away and be forgotten because they are fundamental in maintaining, promoting and passing-down the worldwide renowned ‘Italian way of cooking’ as a living heritage. Very thought-provoking.Martina Depentor, Commercial & Cultural Promotion, Embassy of Italy

A galaxy of cinema luminaries – from Ken Loach to Wim Wenders and Bernardo Bertolucci – pay tribute to the great Italian cinematograher Carlo Di Palma, in this loving documentary that chronicles Di Palma’s extraordinary work for such directors as Michelangelo Antonioni and Woody Allen.Over the history of cinema there have been some extraordinary cinematographers, but pre-eminent amongst their number is Carlo Di Palma. As this finely crafted tribute to Di Palma shows, his life and career ran even deeper than the contributions he made to cinema. A child of the Second World War, Di Palma emerged from Rome’s rubble as a 20-year-old in 1945, and found himself in the magical moment of Italian neorealist cinema. His father was a camera operator; his mother sold flowers on the Spanish Steps, which, in his estimation, gave him a natural sense of colour. It was his innovations in colour with Antonioni’s Red Desert and Blow-Up, in the mid-1960s, that set him apart as a genius of the medium. Director Fariborz Kamkari threads together stunning excerpts from the films with interviews. The result is a glorious celebration of a humanist and an engaged artist of uncommon talent. The end of the documentary reveals the meaning of the title of the film, which captures both a specific moment in Di Palma’s life and his aesthetic approach to cinema.Dr. Alfio Leotta, Senior Lecturer, Film Programme at Victoria University of Wellington
