St. James’ 150th Celebration Plans are well under way for the celebration of St. James’ 150th year. The dates are June 8, 9, and 10, year 2012. Major committees have been defined and chair persons are in place. Sign-up sheets are posted on the bulletin board in the fellowship hall. St. James’ is blessed with an abun-dance of talent and leadership so we are certain to have a wonderful weekend encompassing all the aspects we think of as being so much a part of this parish. We are planning special worship, music, social events, youth involvement, history and commemorative moments as well. We will gather as many parishioners and clergy as pos-sible; those who have moved away will be contacted to help us celebrate. You may think it early to be signing up and yes, we do have a year. However, time has a way of traveling at the speed of light and we are still very much in the formative stages of planning. So, please sign up. There is something for everyone and ideas are welcome. Contact Co-chairs Libby Beardsell or Mary Lou Iles with any questions. Help us celebrate! Also, we are collecting historical photographs. If you have photographs of a significant parish event (worship ser-vice, fellowship, outreach project) that you would like to share, place them in the metal box on top of the St. James mail boxes (located across from the water fountain) or send them by post to 9 Williams Street, Clinton, NY, ATTN: photos. Please identify photos with the event, date, people pictured, and if you like, provide a caption. We suggest including these on a separate paper rather than writing on the back of the photo; avoid staples or paperclips. Include a mailing address, and if possible a stamped envelope, so we may return the items to you once we have scanned them. Digital photographs may be sent as attachments to [email protected]; include information in the e-mail message.

Celebrate Hope! Come to the Cabaret! On Friday, June 10th, Hope House is having an evening

    ••• Tapestry Concert •••Celebrating 25 Years

Sat. June 11, 7pm at St. James

Greetings from México!! May came and went so quickly. Things are going really well here. We are getting ready for summer camps with the children and youth of the diocese. I am finding it hard to believe that my internship is almost coming to an end. God has blessed me in so many ways here. I was blessed this month with a visit from my mom. We had a wonderful time. It was so great to have her meet so many of the people here that have made my time so special. We went to Santa Cruz for church on Sunday which was wonderful since that place has become a second home for me. After the service she did a wonderful dental health talk with the kids, which received rave reviews. It was nice to be able to see this city and the people here through her eyes. I am enjoying my time here and taking advantage of every opportunity. There are many projects that I am looking forward to doing over the next three months. I am so grateful for my time here; I have learned so much. I am not sure what is ahead for me in September but I know that God has a plan. I appreciate all your support and prayers; you are always in mine. Many blessings!! Paz y Amor, Joanna

Communications We have had two meetings since the committee was formed. The scope of the activities is being discussed as the committee moves forward. The thrust will be in two areas. First is outside communications efforts, such as our website, facebook and newspaper publicity. The second is inside or parish-oriented efforts. The committee is in the process of evaluating what St. James is presently doing and brainstorming ideas about what St. James might want to do in the future. The committee will be the publicity conduit for the 150th celebration committee efforts to reach out to the com-munity in this important milestone in St. James’ history in Clinton. The next meeting is scheduled for Sunday, June 26 after church.

St. James’ Day School The Day School had a fantastic year and graduation was enjoyed by all! There are still openings for the Day School in the fall; if you know anyone who wants info, please call (853-5359 x14) or email the Day School ([email protected]). We continue to collect ink cartridges for recycling—a blue bin is available for drop off on the way downstairs to the classrooms. Thank you to all St. James’

Church members and staff for your continued sup-port of the Day School. Have a safe and enjoy-able summer.

Outreach Thank you to everyone who participated in our May Mission of the Month and brought supplies in for Hope House. Our June Mission of the Month, is healthy food for kids during the summer months for The Country Pantry. As of this writing we are close to fulfilling our goal of 40 bags of groceries. They are also in need of paper products. Thank you for all of your help on this project also. We are discussing several ideas for summer projects, including having a presence on the Village Green during the farmer’s market on Thursdays. We hope we can count on many of you to volunteer a few hours to sit at our table. We are in contact with Haiti for some items to sell. More details are coming soon. We are also committed to preparing and serving a cou-ple of meals at Hope House in August this summer. More on that in the next newsletter. We approved a $300.00 donation to the Utica Red Cross for recent expenditures of emergency services and matching funds raised by the Rite 13 group to purchase a cow for the Heifer project.

I have just returned from our last Worship and Forma–tion meeting before the summer, and I know now that it’s official! Yes, the picnic at the Kirkland Town Park will indeed be happening once again, just before the summer sol-stice on June 19th. You may ask, why am I bothering to make such a fuss? Well, it’s because of the delightful pavilion service that we have before the picnic begins. I really enjoy this service because of all the choir-led music—hymns, ser-vice music and an a cappella anthem. Though it’s certainly not necessary, we seem always to have a small instrument or two for accompaniment during the service, as well—a far cry from the very large instrument which we usually employ, and which I’ve decided should definitely be left where it’s most happy. If there are any of you who wish to join in the fun with an instrument or two, please do! No rehearsals, just bring a good ear. The more, the merrier. (If your instrument is a bagpipe, please speak to me beforehand!)

What do you pray for? I think we all pray for the people whom we love, for their well-being and their health. Perhaps some of us pray for strength and grace during difficult peri-ods. Some of us even will have the fortitude to pray for those who have hurt us, to pray for our “enemies.” There’s a story from the book of Kings where God tells Solomon to “ask whatever you want and I will grant it to you.” Solomon prays for an “understanding heart,” and the wisdom to discern what is right and good. Discernment and seeking wisdom are perhaps some-thing that we do not give enough time and energy to. Often we can be swept along by the mass-mindedness of the culture we are a part of. Yet, an important mark of followers of “the way” of Christ is taking the time to pray for an understanding heart. Are we adequately making time to seek understanding hearts, in our homes, and in our parish? The topics, the issues crying out for our attention are many: • war, terrorism and questions of justice; • the loss of democracy; • the many issues under social justice; • the dignity of every human person; • bio-ethical concerns as technology, medicine, and the human person converge in unexplored ways The list could go on and on. If we tried to have conver-sations with each other as a way of cultivating understanding hearts, I imagine these conversations could involve the fol-lowing touchstones: • Regarding different issues, we should ask what the scriptures say about the topic. • We should also seek out what wisdom figures from dif-ferent traditions have said about the topic. • We ought to listen to contemporary scientific disci-plines in the medical, psychological, and sociological spheres for what these disciplines are discovering. • We need to pay attention to what the dominant culture is suggesting about an issue. • We should also attend to wisdom figures in our lives: counselors, spiritual directors, ministers, trusted friends, to take in their wisdom. A truly understanding heart generates possible under-standings of the truth, evaluates those options, and then must discern the right path. This process of growing an understanding heart is really the process of conscience and conscience formation. Someone told me once that we know we are moving toward discernment when and if we have rela-tive peace of heart about an area. If, on the other hand, we are conflicted or in chaos about an issue, it could be that we have not yet reached true wisdom. Paul, in his famous line from Romans, says, “We know all things work for good for those who love God.” Paul is

speaking out of that very positive paschal spirituality that God is working all things for our benefit, God is always call-ing forth new life from all of life’s circumstances, and he is promising us glory in the face of the ultimate challenges that each of us must face. People with understanding hearts are always striving to discern the hand of God, the activity of God, the move-ment of God, in each of our stories, and in our collective story as a community of disciples. Jesus teaches us that there is a treasure or a pearl called the Reign of God. To have this pearl, we must first sell or dispose of some things. If we can describe the Reign of God as a life of wholeness, wellness, communion with our fellow person, communion with God—if those are some of the charac-teristics of life in God’s Reign–we must ask what keeps us from experiencing these values. In some cases, it is exces-sive busyness, or addiction, or a pattern of sin, or unchecked emotional problems, or cynicism about a troubled relation-ship, or simply malaise of spirit. Any of these can keep us from the happiness of life in God’s Reign. If any of us knows that we are not experiencing God’s Reign as we should and could, the challenge is to name what we need to sell off. And the greater challenge is to take the necessary action involved in this selling as our investment in the Reign of God. This is a challenge to do something, not think or feel something—but do something—to grow in the experience of the Reign of God. I am aware of some things I need to do that I have been procrastinating on. I feel God nudging me to get to that sell-ing, to get to that action that will help me grow and be more profoundly spiritually transformed. What do you pray for? The invitation to us as follow-ers of the way is to pray regularly for an understanding heart, an understanding heart that pursues what is good —God’s movement in our lives, and the action that needs to be taken if we are to continue to grow spiritually.

    Children’s Ministry

Vestry News The Vestry approved the lay delegates to the 2011 dioc-esan convention – Patricia Jue, Matt Weber and alternates Wendy Weber and Karen Anderson. We had a lengthy discus-sion about visioning the future of St. James, including the celebration of our 150th anniversary as a parish June 8, 9 and 10, 2012. We expect you will be hearing a great deal about this in the coming months. We heard updates on our finances and from all of our ministry groups, including the work com-pleted on the drainage issues in and around the rectory. Our major topic of discussion in June will be preliminary discus-sions of how to best use the proceeds from the pending sale of the Lewis House. We want to be good stewards of all our resources. As always, your input is welcome.

Thank you for a great year in Sunday School! It has been a pleasure getting to know all of the students and vol-unteer helpers over the course of the year. Along with the children, I too have grown from the experience. 2011-2012 promises to be an exciting year! Over the summer, we will be working hard to get a special, dedicated space ready for the children. Our Children’s Chapel will have real, child-sized pews, linen cloths, candles and walls decorated to look like stained glass windows. The room next door will be redone in a child-friendly adventure ship theme with specialized areas for reading, play and projects. We will need lots of volunteers to make this a reality, so please stay posted! Next year, we will have lots of games and fun activi-ties in our units of study, which will be Creative Ways to Pray, Advent, Stories of the Old Testament (Boats in the Bible), Stories of the New Testament (The Parables), and The History of Our Church (getting ready for the 150th Anniversary of St. James!) Registration for Sunday School will begin Sept. 11th, 2011. Have a wonderful summer!

Rite 13 On May 20th eleven youth group members and five adults attended Nightwatch, an overnight program at St. John the Devine. We joined 4 other church groups for a total of 60 youth and 15 adults. We left Clinton at noon; the girls in Pinto’s Big Blue, which included Blair Jones and Father Tim and the boys in the Williams’ van with Kevin Williams and Randy Wilson. We made a “pit” stop at the last rest area on 87 south and arrived in NYC about 4:30. We parked in the church lot then walked a few blocks to a pizza place for din-ner. Upon checking in at Nightwatch, the kids immediately began playing “Around the World” or basketball with a few other Nightwatch participants and the “old coots,” Tim and Randy. You’ll be glad to know the old coots did not embar-rass themselves, were not injured nor needed resuscitation. The evening was followed by a couple of ice-breaker games, an amazing organ demonstration of the fabulous organ (Richard, you’d weep happy tears), singing, a laby-rinth whereby each person “leaves” whatever weighs on their minds and hearts at the end of the journey. And finally, a ser-vice complete with communion. Lights out, 1:30 AM. Lights on, 7 AM. Breakfast which consisted of as much preservative-filled, processed foods that

we could buy. It’s all good, folks. We then toured the amazing cathedral. Although the tour did run on the long side, thank you members, for still being respectful during the long tour. Yes, we did notice that and appreciate it. Regardless, St. John the Devine is a beauti-ful structure, grand in size and beauty. We departed NYC on a sunny day at approximately 10:30, made a lunch stop just south of Albany and arrived back in Clinton about 3:30. The girls were wonderful, polite, considerate and a pleasure to ride with; the boys...well, Kevin Williams still refuses to speak... Seriously, all-in-all it was a really nice and successful inaugural trip for Rite 13. These are all good kids...regard-less of what I might say... A huge thank you to Randy Wilson, Tim Reger, Blair Jones and Kevin Williams for chaperoning this event. Thank you to the kids for wanting to continue with Rite 13. We’re VERY happy to spend time with all of you. Thanks to Helena for the awesome brownie cupcakes...*whispering*...don’t tell the boys. And thank you to all the parents for being so supportive of this group, it’s activities and meetings. —Sue Pinto
