'Supreme' Grown by: Gloria & Allan Cushway

This is not a new plant and was registered in1966 as

"Rhyncholaeliocattleya Sylvia Fry" by Dos Pueblos Orchid Co. Inc., P O Box 158, Goleta, California, CA 93116, U.S.A. Notice the change from a Blc. to a Rlc. It has eight species in its back ground .This plant has won many prizes over years. Different varieties have won awards, 21 in total. One here was in1967 by J. Greer with Sylvia Fry ‘Francesca. There are 97 first generation crosses registered and a total of 382 progeny. It has been through our auction in the past, one to keep your eye out for.

Specimen Plant of the Month : Dendrochilum [Ddc.] tenellum (Nees & Meyen) Ames, Philipp. J. Sci., C 2: 318 (1907). Grown by: Angie Sulfaro

This is a different plant to last month, there were also a few in the display at the Grand. Notes

same as last month. When comparing the last month you could see a difference in the flower spikes in the photo. This Dendrochilum is an interesting orchid, looks like grass when not in flower, and then get the spikes from near the top of the leaves. This orchid comes from the Philippines. A common and widely distributed orchid, it grows in mountainous areas at 3300-4900 ft. (1000-1500 m). Plants are reported from the following islands Babuyan, Camiguin, Leyte, Luzon, and Mindanao, Mindoro. On Luzon, they are found in the provinces of Bataan, Benguet, Mountain Province (near Bontoc), Cagayan, Camarines Sur, Ifugao, Kalinga-Apayao, Laguna, Nueva Vizcaya, Rizal, Sorsogon, and Zambales. On Mindanao they are found in Davao Province From Orchidwiz.as above they have a wide distribution and a cool grower at that height. As they fill a pot, pot on to a slightly larger pot and it will eventually grow like this one in size.

Specie Plant of the Month : Gongora

[Gga.] rufescens

Jenny, Orchidee

(Hamburg) 36:

116 (1985).

Grown by:

Paul

McDonough This is a very interesting species and going by the naming date only a fairly new species coming from Colombia. The type specimen was collected in the

Department of Narino in southwestern Colombia just north of the border with Ecuador. No specific habitat location, type, or elevation were reported, so the following climate data and cultural suggestions should be used with a great deal of caution. from Orchidwiz There are other types of species available and I have one but it is a hot grower and grows in the phal house where it flowers well. They have nice long spikes to display as this one has.

Novice Plant of the Month: Dendrobium SSBF Rock Star

Grown by: Roslyn Mathews This is a nice native Dendrobium grown by Ros, not bad in shape and looks good.

When I saw the name I thought what does it mean ? Ros bought it in to put in the display at the Grand so I was able to sort out

and was not impressed there was 2 labels in the pot from when Ros bought the plant. This is not ok when a nursery sells plants labelled like this especially to new growers or to anyone. This is what I saw

1. Label one had a picture showing a photo which was not like this and had printed on the label SSBF Rockstar

2. The second label also had the nursery name on the back On the top where the plant name goes has CYMBIDIUM in ink Below this it had this written STARSHEEN BOTANK FIREWORKS RUTHERFORD STAR BURST ROCKSTAR wt1003 how can you work this out this is what it should be This is Den Starsheen “ Botank Fireworks” X Den. Rutherford

Starburst “Rockstar” I

[Den.] Rutherford Sunburst. To make it more interesting there are two registered plants both by the same person both with native parents, also both parents had speciosum in their back ground hence could be why Ros’s plant looks like this I would like to thank all our members that once more brought plants in to the show at The Grand. The display came up very well and congratulations to all our prize winners Ian Nelson Show Marshal/Patron
