Two barges at the Port of Houston’s Bulk Materials Handling Plant on the Houston Ship Channelwere loaded with 2400 tons of crushed limestone in near record time last month for shipment toMarietta, Ohio, where the material will be used for applying to exterior walls of new constructions.The 35 bottom dumper rall cars were routed to the Port of Houston from Austin by the shi.pper,Texas Crushed Stone. Stevedoring for the crushed limestone shipment, the first such through thePort’s Bulk Plant, was by Shippers Stevedoring Co. The Plant’s all-time record of 151,742 tons inFebruary was followed closely in June with 145,518 tons.

One of the largest single shipments of con-tainers ever to enter the Port of Houston came inrecently aboard the M/V DAPHNE of theCartainer Line, shown above at City Dock17 shortly after her arrival. There were morethan 600 containers aboard the vessel, 307 ofwhich were discharged at the Port of Houston.The containers were both 10 foot and 20 footboxes, some of which contained automobileswhile others carried general cargo. Houston’s Container Cargoes Jump 25% First Half of 1971With ever increasing numhers of con-

tainers moving in and out of its facili-ties, the Port of Houston has registereda striking 25 per cent increase in con-tainers moving in foreign trade duringthe first half of 1971 as compared tothe same period a year ago.

Some 10,741 of the 20-foot units werehandled in the Port’s first two quarterscompared to 8,554 equivalent unitsmoved during the first half of 1970.

In addition, on September 1 the Portof Houston’s second giant PACECO

container crane will go into operationto help handle what Port officials seeas a continuing future increase in thecontainer trade in the Gulf. The Portof Houston is the only ,port in the entireGulf with these special container cranes,and has been ever since the first onewent into operation early in 1966.

The $1.2 million new PACECO cranehas a 40 ton capacity and can he modi-fied to handle up to 50 tons. It will op-erate on rails over nine wharves, threeof them open and the remainder with

The first PACECO crane is underlease to Sea-Land Services, Inc., whichalso operate a marshalling yard on a12 acre tract behind open wharves 16and 17, over which the crane moves.

The new crane will serve wharves 23through 31 and the Port of Houston’snew million dollar container marshal-ling yard located hehind open wharf29, as well as two privately ownedmarshalling yards also located behindthe afore-mentioned docks.

In both foreign and domestic con-tainers moved during the first half ofthe year, the Port recorded a total of23,208 loaded 20-foot or equivalentcontainers. These figures do not includeempty containers handled, eight andten-foot units or the household van-typecontainers.

The foreign trade statistics for tirefirst half of 1971 showed that containerexports exceeded container imports bya margin of 6,526 units to 4,215, signi-ficant in light of the United States’ cur-rent balance of payments prohlems.

The Port of Houston is also forgingahead with its $100 million project atBarbour’s Cut, a 20-wharf containerand sea/barge terminal facility at thejunction of the Houston Ship Channeland Galveston Bay. Although plannedas a 15-20 year project, Barbour’s Cutis expected to he operational in its firststages early next year to serve the largerand deeper draft sea/barge vessels nowbeginning to come off the ways.

All told, the Port of Houston Au-thority has now availahle some 13wbarves for loading and unloadinocontainers, five of them open wharvesand the remainder with wide concreteaprons.

Also used in container operations arethe Port’s two gantry cranes, one wilha 35 ton capacity and the other with a50 ton capacity. A 1,/0-ton mobile cranewith an elevated cab is also working tire20 and 40 foot containers.

The Port-huilt container marshallingyard, lighted, fenced and .paved, is op-erated by a consortium of Houstonsteamship agents under the name ofTerminal Services of Houston, Inc. Inaddition to storage of containers, theyard also rents out hogies for containerJand movement and does repair work onthe big boxes.
