What is Rhetoric

Rhetoric is persuasion. It is the opposite of a fight.

In Rhetoric, you argue. Argument is the means by which you persuade people to side with you on any given issue.

List two examples where this skill might be valuable in real life.

There are three kinds of rhetoric according to Aristotle: logos, ethos, and pathos.

Logos

Argument by logic In other words, using logic to persuade

others is logical rhetoric.

Ethos

Argument by character. Using ones character to persuade others.

This is definitely one aspect of political campaigns. Photo ops and stories of the candidates all serve the purpose of rhetoric by ethos.

This form of rhetoric is also used in court by the selection of witnesses with good character.

Pathos

Persuasion by emotion. This is almost always used in Politics to

incite persuasion. Politicians appeal on the emotion of the audience. Hitler was an expert at this one.

Lawyers use this one in court to persuade the jury. If they feel sympathy for your client, they will most likely take your client’s side. Therefore, you win the case.
