Saturday, July 22, 2017 SESSION 1 2:45 p.m.-3:45 p.m. 101 Google Products for Educators & PTA – Google has many applications that can make the role of an educator and PTA officer much easier.

We will explore some of their applications and discuss how they can assist today's educators, teachers, related professionals and PTA. A Gmail account is helpful for the attendee, but if you don't have that's okay, we will set you up. This workshop is available for possible CTLE credit.

102 How to Promote Your PTA and Bring the Members to You! – Get the inside scoop on the top 10 things you can do today to get your membership rocking. In this workshop, you will learn how to promote membership at every level and find happy PTA members. You will get a tried and tested path to marketing your PTA, energizing your base and increasing your membership numbers.

103 Diversity, Equity and Inclusion – Have you thought about the meaning of diversity involving equity? If you think diversity means culture you only are partially right. This workshop is for understanding the role of diversity, equity and inclusion in the everyday business of teaching students, and of PTA as an organization and the effect these three concepts can have on your fellow educators, PTA board and members, and community. This workshop is available for possible CTLE credit.

104 The Role of Educators and PTA in a Rural School – Small, rural schools account for over 360,000 students in NYS. They have low PTA involvement due to many issues including a culture of undervaluing education. Education is often not seen as a necessity in rural communities with high dropout rates. However, more and more school leaders in these districts are seeing the value of PTA and our unified voice and stance on issues and they want us to be more active in their schools. The purpose of this workshop would be to identify rural schools, address the unique challenges these schools/communities face, and what services PTA can provide for students, families and educators in those schools.

105 Hoppin' and Boppin' to the Advocacy Rock – An overview of advocacy at all levels of PTA; whether working at a local or region level, members can begin to create and advocacy plan that they can build upon with their board.

106 You Are the President – Congratulations, and thank you for taking on this important role. This innovative workshop will explore your new responsibilities, providing you with the tools needed for today's PTA and to be an effective president. We will walk you through setting the calendar, developing meeting agendas, how to build your committees and to create a partnership with your principal.

201 Social Media – 140 Characters Amplifying Your Advocacy - New York Style! – Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, Pinterest and LinkedIn are common platforms to engage friends, family and colleagues about your interests and life. In this session, speakers will discuss how to effectively use communications and advocacy tools, methods and emerging technologies to influence policymakers and legislation in your community, state and at the national level.

202 Take a Spin around the Unit Portal – Get up to speed and accelerate your knowledge of navigating around the Online Unit Portal. Be the cool cat who can easily find information (Membership, Dues Payments, Credit Vouchers, Insurance and Bylaws) and complete your tasks quickly and efficiently for a smooth ride this year running your PTA.

203 The Messy Truth: When Implicit & Explicit Bias Gets in the Way of Leadership that is Diverse and Culturally Responsive in Your School Building and PTA – A conversation about the importance of your teaching workforce and PTA leadership reflecting the diversity of your community. Communities are diverse in many ways and school personnel and PTA should be as well. Inclusive leadership not only increases membership and transitional leadership but it has the ability to ensure that family-school communication is effective and relationships are fruitful. This workshop is available for possible CTLE credit.

204 Advocacy for Current Wellness Issues and How You Can Support Students – Learn how to advocate for current health and wellness issues in your schools' community as an educator or as a PTA member. Come prepared with topics you would like to discuss and brainstorm on how to advocate for change. We'll discuss how both educators and members can work with students to provide increased support for their wellness. This workshop is available for possible CTLE credit.

205 Bylaws Wizard for Units & Councils – For unit or council presidents and bylaws chairs. Learn all the information you need to review, renew or amend your unit/council bylaws efficiently using the new user friendly Bylaws Wizard.

206 Treasurer 1 – The treasurer plays a key role in the ongoing operation of each PTA unit. He/she is the custodian of the unit’s finances and must ensure that there are appropriate internal controls to prevent misuse of funds. The treasurer guides the unit in making sure there are enough funds available to provide the programs and services. Lastly the treasurer makes sure the required reports are provided to the membership and IRS.

While many of these policies are implemented by well-intentioned people, they can result in materially harmful results to children and youth. A key focus of the workshop will be to have participants identify ways that their respective school buildings and PTA bodies can work, especially through advocacy, to dismantle these policies at both local and statewide levels. This workshop is available for possible CTLE credit.

304 Stepping Up and Stepping Back: Building and Transitioning Leaders – Explore the process of developing and empowering present and future leaders prepared both to succeed in fulfilling their current PTA responsibilities and to carry out healthy, effective transitions in unit/council leadership. We will discuss techniques and resources to help you recruit new talent; follow a fair, inclusive nominations/elections process; and support and challenge developing leaders year-round.

Learn some strategies to effectively partner with your school’s teaching staff and develop a deeper relationship.

306 What Would You Like Your School Leaders to Know – This will be a conversation rather than a presentation. As a former principal and current leader of professional learning for 7000+ school leaders across NYS, a discussion about what educators (especially teachers and related professionals) and PTA members would like their school leaders to know, and what they consider to be the most important qualities and behaviors of a school leader. This workshop is available for possible CTLE credit.

401 Advocacy 101 – This session seeks to provide tips and strategies to successfully lobby in order to effect change in school districts and statewide. It will provide a breakdown of who the "main players" are in education policy and provide a background on the budget, legislative and regulatory processes. Finally, the presentation will brief attendees on the political environment and general advocacy tools.

402 The Hero’s Journey: Reigniting the Passion to Serve and Lead – The Hero’s Journey is a literacy concept introduced by Joseph Campbell that asserts that all epic stories follow a pattern in which the hero embarks on an adventure, and in a decisive crisis wins a victory, and then comes home changed or transferred. This highly interactive and fast paced workshop will ask participants to see their role within the journey of their followers. In addition, we will address leader burnout through the practice of servant leadership and, finally, how service breeds innovation. This workshop is available for possible CTLE credit.

403 Bylaws Wizard (for Region Board Members only) – This workshop is a must for every Region Bylaws Chair and provides training for RDs and RBCs in the process of how units, councils and regions should update their bylaws using the new Bylaws Wizard. This hands-on workshop goes over all the areas on Salesforce that you need to carry out your responsibilities.

404 What's New in Special Education – The purpose of this workshop is to allow educators and parents to recognize that they are not alone while navigating the special education process for their child or their students. We'll discuss how educators and parents stay up to date with the latest changes and how best they can advocate for children in and out of the classroom. This workshop is available for possible CTLE credit.

405 All Aboard-Learn the Way to Lead the Way with an Orientation for Your Board – Do you want to have the BEST PTA year ever? The sure way to a successful year is through an orientation of your PTA Executive Board. Training all volunteers about their responsibilities as board members will help to assure that all members of your team know exactly what is expected. 406 Treasurer 2 – The treasurer plays a key role in the ongoing operation of each PTA unit. He/she is the custodian of the unit’s finances and must ensure that there are appropriate internal controls to prevent misuse of funds. The treasurer is often asked how to - or even if it is acceptable to - do certain things. This workshop seeks to answer these questions.

605 Protecting Your Assets – “Why does my organization need insurance?” That’s a great question and one that every PTA should ask itself. Insurance not only protects your organization, but also protects you as an individual. There are many misconceptions about insurance when it comes to PTAs and you could be held personally liable for an accident that occurs at one of your events. Be sure you know what you are covered and not covered for.

606 Increase Your Attendance-Run an Effective Meeting – There are good meetings and there are bad meetings. Bad meetings drone on forever, you never seem to get to the point, and you leave wondering why you were even present. Effective ones leave you energized and feeling that you've really accomplished something. If you'd like to learn how to run an effective meeting, then this is the workshop for you!

607 Copyright and Fair Use - Is Your Unit In Compliance? – Does your school, your own class website or unit use images and material for your brochures, social media and website from different resources? 503 Website Creation – Are you looking for a website for your unit, council or region? Then join us as we share some possible solutions. We will share and discuss possible platforms that include wordpress.com, Google sites and school district based web pages.

504 Bylaws and Procedures – Bylaws/procedures govern how you run your unit/council. Do you truly know the difference of what is in your bylaws and what should be in your procedures? Let us help you learn the difference and how to make both bylaws/procedures work for your unit/council.

505 Money and Your School District – This session will include a discussion about how schools are funded, how their budgets are developed and the roles school board members, school district leaders and parents play in the process. Learn about the most effective ways to advocate for more funding for your schools and how those funds can make a positive impact for your schools and your children.

506 Hot Topics for Educators and PTA—Now & the Future – What are the issues that will be important to address in the next year in our schools and classrooms? How have the actions of Congress, the NYS Legislature, the Governor and the NYS Board of Regents influenced our children’s education and how might you as an educator and/or as a NYS PTA member best respond in the year ahead? This workshop is available for possible CTLE credit.
