6.1 EXPONENT LAWS Many things in life can be modeled by
exponential relations
Relationship is not linear, but does follow a pattern (e.g. doubling every time, tripling every time)
4.1 EXPONENT LAWS CONT’D Something that keeps doubling would
look like: 2X
Something that keeps tripling would look like: 3X
What about something that keeps halving? e.g. a radioactive material that keeps losing
half its matter every half life:
RECALL EXPONENT LAWS – PT.1 Multiplying Powers of the same base:
22 x 23
BASE
EXPONENT When it’s the SAME BASE, add
exponents, keep base the same
EXPONENT LAWS CONT’D 22 x 23 = 22+3
= 25
= 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2= 32
EXPONENT LAWS CONT’D – PT. 2
Dividing Powers of the same base:
26 23
When it’s the SAME BASE, subtract exponents, keep base the same
EXPONENT LAWS CONT’D 36 33 = 36-3
= 33
= 3 x 3 x 3 = 27
A quotient of powers can also be written like this:
EXPONENT LAWS CONT’D – PT. 3 Evaluating a Power of a Power
(23)2
When you raise one power to another power, multiply the exponents, keep base the same
EXPONENT LAWS CONT’D - PT. 3 (23)2
= 23x2
= 26
= 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 64
PRACTICE EXPONENT LAWS 1. 32 x 33
2. 24 x 2-2
3. 3-3 3-6
