As in other colonial regions, colonists in the south began pushing West from the shoreline to the edge of the Appalachian Mountains, onto Native American lands

Conflicts and skirmishes over land rights in Virginia arose between Colonists and Natives.

After several bloody clashes, colonists called on the Governor of Virginia to take action against the Natives.

The governor refused, and a colonist named Nathanial Bacon organized an angry group of hundreds of men who raided Indian villages, and then marched to Jamestown and burned the capital.

The uprising soon fell apart when Bacon died of dysentery shortly after.

Land/Climate Economy Hot climate Longer growing season Fertile soil.

Large plantations grew tobacco, rice, indigo, etc.

Southern colonies first enslaved Native Americans, but once Natives start dying off, they relied heavily on slaves imported from Africa.

On large plantations 20 to 100 slaves did most of the work.

Farther inland, closer to the Appalachian Mountains, the “backcountry” region had smaller farms and were likely to rely on their own supply.

Georgia was a colony started by James Oglethorpe,

and it would be a place for debtors. In England, debtors were often put in jail until they

paid off the debt. Oglethorpe saw Georgia as a land of opportunity for

people to get out of debt. Georgia also served as a buffer zone between the other English colonies, and Spanish Florida.
