Scanning for Today’s Surveyors

Who are we?

• Survey, GIS, and Construction dealer• Founded in 1988• Employee Owned• Headquartered in Bismarck, ND• States covered: ND, SD, MN, MT, WY,

CO, UT, ID, WA, OR, AK, HI

Who am I?

• Andrew Munson• Applied Geospatial Engineer• Surveyed in North Dakota for 2 years• Currently studying to take the FS• Lived in Colorado for a little over 2

years• Certified Trainer for Trimble products

What is Scanning?

• Scanning uses a technology called LIDAR– Light Imaging, Detection, and Ranging

• Non-contact, non-intrusive method for collecting data

• Easy way to collect large amounts of data

• Developed in the early 60s– Originally used to detect submarines by

plane

How does scanning work?

• Laser is sent out from the scanner• On-board sensor measures the amount

of time it takes to get back• Amount of time = distance travelled

How does scanning work?

• A spinning mirror reflects the beam out of the scanner

• Internal sensors record orientation when the beam is sent out

• A receiver records the return of the beam

• XYZ coordinates are determined by orientation and distance

How does scanning work?

• After data is captured, office software puts the point clouds together– Most of the time

• Each beam return is now a point with xyz coordinates in the program

• Combination of all the points makes a complete scan

Scanning Overview• Rapid & Precise 3D data acquisition• Easily create CAD data, models, calculate

volumes, make precise measurements, change detection, DEMs, classifications

• Automated algorithms• Mobile Mapping

Recent drops in cost and technological advancements have opened laser scanning to new markets and increased demand.

Advantages of Scanning

• Very high precision data• Quickly collect a lot of

information• Safe way to survey in

dangerous areas• Less labor intensive• Large amounts of data• Build more accurate

models• Collect more realistic

as-built data

Disadvantages of Scanning

• Can’t penetrate vegetation– Results in less accurate ground data

• Large datasets• More office time• More processing power needed• Registration difficulties• Costs

Deliverables

• Point Clouds– Representation of all the data

Deliverables

• Surface Model– Representation of all data as one object

Deliverables

• Contour Model– Traditional elevation model built from

surfaces

Deliverables

• As-built Drawing– Very accurate data

Deliverables

• Volume Calculations– Easily prepare stockpile volumes

Deliverables

• 3D Model– Uses the shape of the point cloud to build a

theoretical model

Deliverables

• Tank Calibrations– Able to check tanks for flex, bends, plumb

Deliverables

• Corridor Mapping

Deliverables

• Asset Collection– Quickly and easily compile things like street signs and clearances

Steps to Perform a Scan

• Evaluate the site and your needs– This will determine the type of scanner you

would use

• Determine scan locations– May not be required

• Establish control for the scan– Also may not be required

• Setup scanner and begin scans– Take notes!

• Take pictures from scanner location

Steps to Perform a Scan

• Move the scanner to the next location• Take notes, scan, and take photos• Download the data• Register the data in the office• Create deliverables
