3rd January CPI veteran Bardhan dead
Veteran Communist Party of India leader A.B. Bardhan, 92, passed away after a long illness.
Mr. Bardhan, former general secretary of the CPI, was admitted to the G.B. Pant Hospital here on December 7, after he suffered a stroke.
Bank of Baroda debuts on social media;
introduces twitter handle
Bank of Baroda has entered the social media space by unveiling its Facebook page and Twitter handle as part of its efforts to restore its image that has been hit by the alleged Rs. 6,100-crore remittance scam.
The bank will be available on Facebook and Twitter and its presence will extend to other social marketing mediums in due course.
Govt. may dilute 25% stake in IDBI Bank
State-run lender, IDBI Bank, is planning to raise Rs. 3,771 crore by way of qualified institutional placement (QIP) which could see government stake reduce by 25 per cent.
Government has decided to infuse Rs. 2,229 crore into the bank.
At present, the government holds 76.5 per cent in the bank.
After this infusion, government stake in the bank will go over 80 per cent.
If the bank goes ahead with its proposed QIP issue, the government’s stake in the bank will come down by around 25 per cent.

Arunima Sinha, the amputee mountaineer who set a record by conquering Mount Everest, has added another feather to her cap by conquering Mount Aconcagua in Argentina.

$50-mn loan to fund education of minorities
Centre, World Bank sign credit agreement for
scheme
The Union government and the World Bank signed a $50-million credit agreement for a project aimed at helping young people from minority communities complete their education and improve their employment opportunities.
The Nai Manzil Scheme is designed as an integrated education and training programme that provides youth from minority communities skills needed for different tasks in a rapidly changing world.
Around 20 per cent of those between 17 and 35 years of age from minority groups such as Muslims, Parsees, Jains, Buddhists, Christians, and Sikhs are out of the labour force, according to the World Bank.
New Year’s gift for Adnan Sami
It will be an apt New Year’s gift for Pakistani singer Adnan Sami. Mr. Sami will become an Indian citizen on 1st January as soon as he completes the necessary paperwor
Mr. Sami, who has been staying in India since 2011, will have to fill a citizenship form at the Home Ministry’s office in Delhi and pay Rs. 13,700.
Mr. Sami will be given citizenship under Section 6 (I) of the Indian Citizenship Act, 1955 under the category “citizenship by naturalisation.”

7th-8th January No management quota in nursery admission
the Delhi government scrapped management and all other quotas except those for the Economically Weaker Sections.
By scrapping this quota, about 10,000 seats are expected to be freed up for the general public.
Govt. approves closure of HMT Watches
The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the closure of the iconic HMT Watches and offered a voluntary retirement scheme (VRS) to its employees as per the 2007 pay scales
Two other unviable units of the public sector company, HMT Chinar Watches and HMT Bearings, are also to be shut down.
The Cabinet also gave its nod to the closure formalities of five public sector units (PSUs) under the Heavy Industries Ministry.
These include units of the Tungabhadra Steel and Hindustan Cables for shutting down which the government had earlier given an in-principle approval.

Nepal Prime Minister to visit India in February
Nepal declared that Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli would visit India in early February in his first official trip abroad after taking over as the Prime Minister last October.
Nepal’s Prime Ministers conventionally visit India on their first foreign trip, but reports had hinted in recent past that Mr.Oli might choose Beijing as his first foreign destination.
Govt. to implement BS-VI norms by 2020
The government, in a move to fight pollution, will implement Bharat Standard (BS)-VI emission norms by April 1, 2020.
The Petroleum Ministry would spend Rs. 30,000 crore for upgrading refineries to implement the clean fuel technology
The BS-VI norms will be implemented for new vehicles by April 2020 and for existing vehicles by April 2021 and a notification will be issued by the Union government soon.

Chandela breaks world record; wins gold
Indian shooter Apurvi Chandela broke the world record on way to winning gold in the women’s 10 metre air rifle event at the Swedish Cup Grand Prix.
Chandela shot 211.2 in the event to surpass the feat of Chinese Olympic gold medallist Yi Siling, who held the record with 211.

ICICI Bank to partner FINO PayTech for payments

ICICI Bank will partner FINO PayTech to foray into the payments bank space.
ICICI Bank joins some of the leading lenders of the country which have partnered with payments banks that have received licence from the banking regulator.
For example, State Bank of India and Kotak Mahindra Bank have picked up stake in the payments banks that will be floated by Reliance Industries and the Bharti Group, respectively.
The ICICI Group, with about 16 per cent stake in FINO Paytech, a business correspondent, is the largest domestic shareholder.

People’s Choice Award
Bollywood actress and former Miss World, Priyanka Chopra, has won the ‘Favourite Actress in a New TV series’ award at the People’s Choice Awards 2016 in Los Angeles, for her leading role in American TV thriller series Quantico.
The 33-year-old, who plays the role of an FBI agent named Alex Parrish in the show, was competing against actresses like Emma Roberts, Jamie Lee Curtis, Lea Michele and Marcia Gay Harden in the category.
