Singer-songwriter Dan Hicks dies at 74 (Indian

Express)

American singer-songwriter Dan Hicks passed away after a two-year long battle with throat and liver cancer. He was 74.

Known for his traditional mix of folk, jazz and country music, Hicks took his last breath on February 6 in Mill Valley, California.

News of his demise was confirmed on his official website.

Hicks was known as the frontman of the acoustic band Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks.

He will be remembered for such songs as “I Scare Myself,” “Canned Music” and “How Can I Miss You When You Won’t Go Away?”

The young domestic cricketer, largely relegated to the shadows, unlike those who play for the nation and premier State sides, found validation in the Indian Premier League (IPL) player auction.

The stars, too, found riches coming their way with Shane Watson being the day’s most expensive buy at Rs. 9.5 crore (Royal Challengers Bangalore).

94 players were auctioned, including 23 overseas cricketers.

A whopping Rs. 136 crore was spent on player purchases,and the two new teams - Rising Pune Supergiants and Gujarat Lions build their teams.

The day’s highlight was the Rs. 8.5 crore that Delhi left-arm spinner Pawan Negi secured from Delhi Daredevils.

Negi even emerged as the most expensive Indian player, pipping Yuvraj Singh, who got Rs. 7 crore from Sunrisers Hyderabad.

International Fleet Review 2016 (The Hindu)

IFR, in its second edition, was be held from February 4, 2016 to February 8, 2016 at Visakhapatnam.

The International Fleet Review is being held after a gap of almost one-and-a-half decade.

The first IFR was held in 2001 at Mumbai.

The website ifr16.indiannavy.gov.in and the mobile app IFR-16 Indian Navy which will serve as the single window interface for interaction with the public and the participants have been launched.

The theme of the event is 'United through Oceans' and the mascot is Dolphin.

President Pranab Mukherjee, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, reviewed the fleet on the Presidential Yacht INS Sumitra, accompanied by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Robin K. Dhowan. Governor E. S. L. Narasimhan and Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu were also present.

India’s aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya and INS Viraat,the world’s oldest aircraft carrier on its last voyage, stood majestically even as the baby of the Indian Navy,ASW INS Kadmatt, formed part of the Indian fleet.

Well-known cartoonist Sudhir Tailang, who was suffering from a brain tumour, passed away.

He was awarded Padma Shri in 2004 for his contribution to the art of cartooning.

Rajasthan government gives boost to start-ups

The Rajasthan Government organised a one-day start-up fest at Udaipur, promoting entrepreneurship and giving a boost to start-ups in the state.

The event was a sequel to the state’s first start-up fest, held in Jaipur in October last year, where the government unveiled its maiden start-up policy.

The event, organised by Rajasthan State Industrial Development and Investment Corporation (RIICO) along with its incubation centre Start-up Oasis, saw participation from 100 start-ups, 30 start-up mentors and 15 venture capital investors.

Start-up Oasis, since its establishment in 2013, has catered to start-ups across the State.

8th Feb Joint Indo-Nepal army exercise begins in

The 14-day Indo-Nepal military exercise 'Surya Kiran' focusing on jungle warfare and counter terrorism has begun at Pithoragarh in Uttarakhand.

RBI cancels registration of four NBFCs (Business

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has cancelled the certificate of registration of four non-banking financial companies (NBFCs).

Goyal Commercial Pvt Ltd and First Debt Management Co. of India Ltd are the NBFCs belonging to Kolkata, while Nostalgia Finvest Private Limited and Narad Realtors Private Limited belong to Mumbai.

Indian-American boy Neel Sethi has left a positive impact as Mowgli in the first trailer of Disney's 3D live-animation adventure fantasy film "The Jungle Book".

Directed by Jon Favreau, the movie is based on Rudyard Kipling's stories and inspired by Disney's classic animated film of the same name.

"The Jungle Book" will hit the theatres in 3D on April 22.

Acclaimed poet-lyricist Nida Fazli no more

Nepal's former Prime Minister Sushil Koirala, who was credited with promulgating the country's new Constitution in September last year to complete a stalled peace process, died after a bout of pneumonia.79-year-old Koirala died at his residence in Maharajgunj in the outskirt of capital Kathmandu at 12.50 am (local time).

TRAI backs Net Neutrality, rules against

differential rates (The Hindu)

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) barred telecom service providers from charging differential rates for data services, effectively prohibiting Facebook’s Free Basics and Airtel Zero platform in their current form.

TRAI said a fine of Rs. 50,000 would be levied per day, subject to a maximum of Rs. 50 lakh, for any violation of these regulations.

An exemption, however, has been made for offering emergency services.

RBI to cut repo rate by 25 bps in April: Nomura

(Economic Times)

The Reserve Bank is likely to cut the repo rate by 25 basis points (bps) after the Budget, in its policy meeting in April, beyond which the central bank is expected to stay on hold.

According to the Japanese brokerage firm, gross value added (GVA) growth has marginally undershot the RBI's 7.4% projection in the financial year 2015-16, supporting the case for a rate cut.

J&K set to host 10th edition of SaMaPa music

Spread over 35 locations across the scenic state and 75 concert performances, music cutting across genres is set to resonate Jammu and Kashmir as the 10th edition of the 'SaMaPa Aalap Festival' goes underway on February 16.

Mobile phones sold in India may have local fonts

Indian fonts may be mandatory for mobile phones sold in the country according to new standards for handsets being finalised by the government.

The Bureau of Indian Standards is expected to notify the standards that will require handsets to be able to render Indian font messages as well as allow users to type.

11th Feb Centre plans workshop for 23 cities to improve

In order to enable every state to be included in the Centre's Smartcity project, the Urban Development Ministry has communicated the 'deficiencies' in the plan submitted by 23 cities across the country that failed to make the cut.

The Ministry will soon organise a workshop to guide these 23 cities in improving their Smart City plans so they can submit improved proposals by April 15 this year.

The move comes against the backdrop of concerns being raised in some political quarters.
