Introduction

The indigenous people of Iraq are marginalized by almost all

organizations especially when it comes to their language which represents their only identity wherever they go and live. There is no specific organization or organizations that support the free lance writers of this Modern Assyrian language and its dialects in Iraq; for the excuses are many but the specific one is in its title Assyrian.

In fact, I limit myself to publish digital products in the form of pdfs so as to easily circulate what I think is necessary to educate students and help learners learn this language which everybody highlights as : “the language which Christ preaches with the “Good News” all over the Mediterranean Sea shores, in Jerusalem, Syria , and the region known then Judea.

My thanks go to Ankawa.com site for publishing almost everything I sent to; as the only site that exists for Assyrian nation of all Christian denominations: Chaldo-Syrio-Atouraye in Iraq and in Diaspora. I hope that all other sites will follow the steps of the Ankawa media in impartially publishing whatever are sent to immediately from free lance writers as materials, articles, books, or dictionaries. I also thank Ishtar tv.com for publishing a few of my books and for keeping a couple in their library.

My thanks go to also the ANCI (Assyrian national Conference Illinois and the AUAF (American Universal Alliance Federation) for the appreciation of NABU award given to myself for the humongous contributions I made in the field of the Modern Assyrian Language.

Chapter 1

Classical Aramaic and Modern Assyrian Language are in

continuum

Assyrian Language used to be written by the Assyrian Kings as their Royal Language in Cuneiform script whereas Assyrian written alphabetically was used in Aramaic inscriptions by the king’s entourage or commanders as a second language 350 B. C. Christ spoke it and He taught “our Father….” In Assyrian language . Mathew wrote his “Bible” in Aramaic Characters which were then the type of the alphabets common for the Phoenicians in the West part of Assyria . Then the Bible Language spread through the apostles work to be the language of Christian followers to worship Him in all Mesopotamian written works of the CHURCH (s) in the Aramaic script.

The original people of the region converted to Christianity as they believed in the incarnation of God, a faith already existed in their mythology and it was not a new for them. In fact, Jonah had already prophesied about the living God of Judea in Nineveh. All people under the Assyrian’s Lands adopted Christianity of Judaism ,and Assyrian citizens of Mesopotamia used the Aramaic script to serve a new religion and church , integrating a new script and vocabulary with what they already have of the dialects: Chaldo-Syrio-Assyrian which were originally inherited from the Cuneiform, a process that is still going on since then to the present day.

The Jewish people ( Jews) usually call, then, those who locally speak it as Samaritans and they give the language a name as Aramaic. This concept is generalized by the Jews to include all other people (who do not speak or write Hebrew) outside Jerusalem Jordan, and Syria.

This small manual handles both Classical Aramaic language of the Bible and liturgy and the Modern Assyrian together as to be one in continuum, showing that classical Aramaic is fixed for prayers, psalms, hymns, and liturgy in general.

The Aramaic is the language of the theology and the mysteries of the first prime Christianity in Mesopotamia. Whereas, Modern Assyrian Language : Dialects: Chaldo –Syrio-Assyrian language is the language of the people in which all Mesopotamians speak at home as natives i.e., members of the family automatically switch their country language into their specific language of the Mesopotamians known as “Sorith” : The Modern Assyrian Language thus comprise: Chaldo-Syrio-Assyrian Dialects. . In my simple comparison as sound system, grammar, and lexicon , I come to the conclusion that these 2 types of Languages are living in continuum, though the Modern Assyrian language (Sorith) is becoming more and more the language of secular Literature i.e., songs, poetry, folklores, conferences etc. Modern Assyrian language is not fixed and is changeable and it differs from church denominational synagogues and parishioners to the others as a sound system ; nevertheless, it is comprehensible and is considered one to be the language of our Assyrian nation all in all walks of life. When comparing the classical Aramaic with the Modern Assyrian language, it is clear that

plural in the Modern Assyrian Language has become one for both masculine and feminine .

Some dialects have taken the /o/ or /e:/ vowel within the morphs as suffixes ( inflections) -

okhon, or -e:ke:n regardless of the gender . No syamme : two dots of the plural imarker are

not needed in the modern Assyrian language. No zlame rakeekhi (e:) are needed. Ptakha is

reduced to where the consonant is doubled when it is used; otherwise, zqapa is enough. The

diacritics are less in the Modern Assyrian language .

Certain Modern Assyrian dialects add even extra khon or khe:n

1. ?akhnan + e:khin : We اسعصضصع = اسعع

2. ?akhton + akhtokhon: you plural for bothgenders اسىرضرع = اسىرع

Due to the geographical separation plus church denomination as boycotting talking to each

other over long period of times, every dialect has reduced the suffix from a long inflection into

a shorter one differently ; nevertheless, all agree upon the fact that plural has become one .

Compare

Kthawane:hi = their books ( ع) ضىبعصذه

Kthawae:hi = their book ( ع)ضىبصذه

Mathwathe:hi = their cities ( ع) ظىرىصذه

Maathe:hi = their city (ع)ظىصذه

“Their” refers to both gender masculine and feminine

We see that contractions in the Modern Assyrian language go in different ways, but whatever

is left is a part of the full-morpheme in the classical Aramaic used as a new smallest

meaningful unit added as suffixes to convey the same meaning .

In the Classical Aramaic :

Plural/past

Katbe:n= ktolay e: in the classical Aramaic refers to gender as feminine Katbon = ktolon o: in the classical Aramaic language refers to gender as masculine . In the Modern Assyrian: Plural/past Lon / lay refers to plural as number but not gender. They are for both Zilon/ zilay/ zilna = they left / travelled

they left ازطرع ، ازطص ، ازطعا

Introduction

When I was in the intermediate school, I was eager to get any source to increase my

knowledge and learn vocabulary but I could not get any then, a disappointment that

I want to solve now for the coming generations.

It is necessary that any person who knows something about this language under any

name should publish whatever it is to help others have an access to for learning,

especially when it is dealing with the Christianity and church terminology since it is

the key language for almost all churches ( including Coptic ) in the Middle East .

I hope that this pamphlet will help at least people who are interested in learning the

church language and its terminology easily by only going to the English alphabet

and find the equivalents in Arabic and Modern Assyrian language.

I myself am indebted to Mr. Hurmiz Khamis Matti, an Arabic Assyrian teacher in the High

school of Sumail in Duhok, who sent me the Assyrian fonts that I have used in typing almost

all of my books . I wish him and his family the best.

At the end, I appreciate all good words that many friends wrote about my dedicated work for

the Assyrian Language to the Chaldo-Soryo-Assyrian nation and communities all over the

world.

Lord’s Prayer

Our father, who art

in heaven, hallowed

be thy name , thy

kingdom come; thy

will be done on

earth as it is in

heaven. Give us this

day our daily bread;

and forgive us our

trespasses as we

forgive those who

trespass against us ;

and lead us not

into temptation , but

deliver us from evil.
