How are students assessed?Exams are just one o the ways in which students
are assessed. Continuous assessment is a
mixture o independent and group project work
that allows students to work steadily rather
than a single, intense exam period. Te ratio o
exams to continuous assessment depends on the
subject studied and selection o modules.

are determined by grades achieved in the
second and third year o study, whereas
postgraduate awards are based on marks inall components.
Undergraduate dissertations are usually
between 10,00012,000 words long
Masters dissertations vary in length, and

Te PhD comprises a written thesis

Engineering, Mathematics andPhysical SciencesTe Universitys expertise covers Engineering,
Mathematics and Computer Science, Medical
Imaging, and Physics and Astronomy at the
Streatham campus in Exeter. At the Cornwall
campus the Renewable Energy group hasexpertise in energy policy, marine renewables,
bio-uels, electrical power and networks,
wind, photo-voltaic and thermal technologies.
Te University also oers the only Mining
Engineering course in the UK, alongside degrees
in Geology and Minerals Engineering.
Exeter academics are committed to undertaking

I was interested in Engineering and
had studied Materials Engineering
or one year at home, beore going in
to the Airorce in South Korea. While
I was in the Airorce, I started to
think about what I could do with my
career ater my time there. I decided I
wanted to change my lie and go and
study in a dierent country. Thats
when I decided to come to Exeter.
The teaching is quite dierent here.
In my country it is one way teaching,
where the teacher just speaks to the
students. Here its better because
you can speak to your classmates
and have your own opinion. You can
also communicate with the teachers
easily too, as they are very open to
questions.

Biomedical, Lie andEnvironmental SciencesTe University oers a broad range o
programmes in the areas o Biosciences,
Geography, Psychology and Sport and Health
Sciences, with the opportunity to specialise in
a single discipline or explore interesting areas
o interdisciplinary study. eaching is led by
our research and many o our programmes oer
eldwork opportunities both in the UK and
overseas, with the option o a years industrial
experience or study abroad available on several
o our degrees.
In addition to one o the broadest Biological
Science degrees in the UK, students can also
specialise in biochemistry, conservation biology
and ecology, evolutionary biology, human
biosciences, molecular biology, and zoology.
Students enrolled on the International
Foundation in Biomedical, Lie and
Environmental Science at the INO Centre
can also progress to the Bachelor o Clinical
Science degree, which is taught jointly by the
Medical School and Biosciences. Tis unique
degree has been developed in consultation with
industry and the National Health Service (NHS)to train uture research scientists to improve
patient health. Te programme provides a
rm oundation in the core biomedical and
biomolecular sciences, alongside an insight into
medical practice and the biotechnologies used to
diagnose disorders and treat patients. Graduates
will have the necessary scientic knowledge,
research and communication skills to prepare
them or a successul translational research
career helping to progress scientic discovery
into clinical practice.
In Geography our degree programmes
consider critical global issues such as climate
change, energy policy, sustainability, satellite
mapping, biosecurity, heritage, landscape and
health geographies. Te Streatham campus
boasts many experimental and analytical
laboratories or physical geography including the
3.7 million Sediment Research Facility, which
includes the rainall simulator experimental
acility. Te Cornwall campus also oers
outstanding laboratories or environmentalchange and process studies, and a dedicated
GIS suite or geospatial modelling activities and
remote sensing.
Our Psychology researchers are active in social,
cognitive and clinical psychology conducting
studies to improve health and well-being such
as depression, addiction and the health benets
o social groups. We also work closely with
local zoos and wildlie acilities to nd ways
o improving the lives o animals in captivity.
Students have access to specialist research
laboratories, extensive computer laboratories
and state-o-the-art audiovisual acilities.Sports Science is based on the St Lukes campus
where students have access to purpose-bui lt
teaching and research laboratories or sport
and exercise physiology, biomechanics,
health and perormance psychology and
qualitative research. Academics work with
industrial partners such as Kelloggs, Unilever,
GlaxoSmithKline, as well as individual
athletes, sports teams and individuals in the
local community.

The teachers at INTO Exeter are
really riendly. They are more
approachable than my teachers at
High School and the classes are also
a lot smaller here, as at home there
would have been 3040 students in
a class. I think it makes or a better
experience to have smaller classes.
The way we learn in Japan is also very
dierent. I used to just copy o the
board or rom books and listen to the
teachers. Here we talk in class and it s
much more interactive. I didnt know
about plagiarism in Japan, but Im not
worried about it as we have been
taught how to summarise and how to
paraphrase to avoid this.

year options are usually specialist seminar-
centered modules that reect our academics
research specialisms.
Te Universitys activity in this area is
spread across its three campuses. English,
Film Studies and Modern Languages are
located in the Queens Building at the heart
o the Streatham campus, which has recently
undergone a multimillion pound renovation
to enhance acilities. Drama has dedicated
acilities a short walk rom the Streathamcampus and urther rehearsal space in the
Roborough Studios. Anthropology, Classics,
History, Law, Politics, Philosophy, Sociology
and Teology are based in the Amory building,
which boasts modern teaching and studying
acilities while Archaeology enjoys reurbished

Building. Also on the Streatham campus is the
purpose built Institute o Arab and Islamic

in one place. The University also has

Sports Park, which is where I play
hockey. Its a big passion o mine and
I play or the University team. I knew
when I was looking or a university
that I wanted a campus liestyle and
thats exactly what Exeter delivers.Living in the INTO accommodation on
campus has also helped me to meet
lots o new people.

Tis module provides an overview o the key
developments in British history and politics,
19001950. opics will include: liberal reorms
o the early 20th century; the Suragette
Movement; economic depression and the
General Strike; the rise o the Labour Party; the
beginning o the Welare State; Britain and the
European Union; Tatcherism; women in Britain
since 1945; and the media.
Foundation Mathematics
Tis module aims to provide a oundation in
mathematics or students who intend to ollow
a degree programme in the area o Business,
Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics
or other related disciplines. opics will include:
geometry, logarithm and exponential unctions;
dierentiation and integration; statistics; and
using Microsot Excel.
Introduction to Accounting and Finance
Te aim o this optional module is to give you an
understanding o accounting and nance.
opics will include: basic accounting concepts;
procedures used in the preparation o nancial
statements; analysis o published inormation;
and using accounting inormation to assist with
business planning and decision making. Te
study o nance ocuses on the centra l issues o
how nance is raised and invested in pursuit o
core business objectives.
By the end o this module, you will be able to
demonstrate an understanding o the nature
and context o accounting and will have the
capacity to undertake appropriate numerical
procedures and techniques in preparing and
analysing nancial statements and internal
management reports.
Introduction to Biological Science
Tis module will provide an overview o key
concepts and subjects in biology in preparation
or proceeding with a degree programme in the
Biological Sciences. Te module will develop
your understanding o biological structures
and processes rom the cellular to organism
to system level. opics will include: cellular
structure; DNA replication and cell division;
genetics; cellular energy generation and
evolution; diversity; and ecology.

Introduction to Chemical Science
Tis module will provide an overview o key
concepts and subjects in chemistry.Te module will develop your understanding
o chemical principles and processes that are
relevant to everyday laboratory work. Te

opics will include: basic organic and inorganic
chemistry; classication o organic compounds
and their reactions; energy; enthalpy, and
dynamic equilibrium; reaction kinetics; and
spectroscopy and its interpretation.

Introduction to Economics
Tis module introduces, and applies to real
world situations, major theoretical models
and key terminology o macro and micro-
economic theory. opics will include: the
economic environment; the market mechanism
and market ailure; market structure and
competition; growth; ination; unemployment;
international trade; and macroeconomic policy.
Introduction to Filmand Literary Studies
Tis module provides an introduction to the
study o literature and lm rom a range o
perspectives. Tis includes textual analysis o
the orm and style o selected poetic, literary and
lmic texts, the development o an awareness
o the contexts o production and reception,
and an understanding o critical concepts such
as narrative, genre and adaptation in literature
and lm. By the end o this module, you will be
able to discuss and analyse relevant theoretical
issues through seminars and essay writing.
Introduction to Lawand the English Legal System 1
Tis module will cover the basic structure
o English law and its legal system, and the
oundations o the substantive law o contract
and criminal law.
opics will include: the English court system;
the doctrine o precedent; the basic oundationso criminal law; and the basic oundations o
contract law.
Introduction to Lawand the English Legal System 2
Tis module ollows on rom the topics covered
in Introduction to Law and the English Legal
System 1. It will cover how the English legal
system has been aected by developments in
human rights law, as well as t he basic elements
o two urther core subjects tort law and
land law.
opics will include: the impact o the
incorporation o the European Conventiono Human Rights into English law; the
basic oundations o tort law; and the basic
oundations o land law.
All students will study English language skills or academic study. Tis 40-credit module
provides the core skills in English needed or university-level study and runs the length
o the course. Each International Foundation pathway also has compulsory academic
modules. Tese are considered to be the basis or study o each discipline area.

Introduction to Management
Te aim o this module is to give you an
introduction to the characteristics o dierent
organisations, an appreciation o how businesses
are managed and an understanding o business
terminology. By the end o the module you
will be able to demonstrate amiliarity with
business aims, objectives, strategy and planning
as well as an appreciation o the characterist ics
o organisations and dierent approaches to
organisational structure.
You will be introduced to the principles o
modern management through a considerationo management theories and the process o
management through an investigation o
culture, leadership and motivation. Te range
o themes extends to: production; quality;
communication; social responsibility; business
growth and organisational change.
Introduction to Physical Science
Tis module will provide an introduction to
the undamental concepts o physical science,
providing a oundation or urther study o
materials, structures, mechanics and electronics
at a level necessary to commence an Engineering
degree. It will also consolidate a commonknowledge base and begin the development
o a learning methodology appropriate to an
Engineering degree programme.
You will develop an understanding o the
undamentals o physics and the inter-
relationship between atomic structure and the
properties o matter and how to apply these
concepts to the analysis o mechanical, electrical
and thermal problems.
Tere will be additional laboratory-
based sessions designed to support the
taught material.
Introduction to Psychology
Tis module will provide a oundation in
psychological science or students who wish to
ollow a degree programme in psychology or
other disciplines at a UK university.
Te module will cover a range o undamental
issues and concepts drawn rom general
psychology with a particular emphasis on their
relevance to issues that arise in everyday lie.
An indicative list o topics would include the
ollowing: the nature o psychology as the study
o behaviour and mental processes, both normal
and abnormal; theories and research methodsocusing on the main perspectives cognitive,
behaviourist, Freudian and biological; the role
o culture; perception, memory and intelligence;
ethical issues.
Introduction to World Politicsand International Relations
Tis module aims to introduce students to
the study o world politics and international
relations by looking at global events since the
end o World War 2.
opics will include: the ormation o the
United Nations, the increasing importance o
International Law and the changing relationship
between states and other international
bodies. You will also discuss and analyse the
relationship between national politics and
a nations oreign policy, and the eects ointernational bodies and ideology.

Tis module builds on the Foundation
Mathematics module to provide stronger
background in areas o mathematics required
or higher study o a science-based discipline.

Mathematics 2
Tis module aims to introduce some o the topics
in areas o mathematics that you wil l meet when

I provide INTO Exeter students with in-depth support, guidance and advice on
all aspects o progression to the University o Exeter. This includes step-by-step
direction with applications, progression requirements, and programme inormation. I
work closely with the University Colleges to make sure that INTO students have lots
o opportunities to get a taste o what it s really like to be a student at the University:
meeting with academic sta, attending sample lectures, learning about employability
opportunities, visiting acilities, and hearing rom alumni. I also work with Student
Helpers a group o students who have already progressed rom the Centre to studyat the University o Exeter. They are able to share their experience o progressing to
degree level study with current students, and have lots o great tips and advice.
