Dear Parish Family, Last week I wrote about forming Parish Commissions to help our community, but I did not have the room to give you any details or examples. If we take the Parish and Family Life Commission as an example, this commission would oversee and organize
groups and ministries that promote and support the life of our parish and the families within our parish. This commission would make sure different activities and events are available and that these activities and events are done well. One such event is our annual Feast Day celebration each June. Many of us just assume that the Feast Day will just happen and we just need to show up. I discovered this past year that the organization and planning of the Feast Day depends on 3 and ¼ people. A parish staff member, the parish custodian, a parishioner in food preparation. I count myself as the quarter person, since I was mostly an observer. The team of three does an excellent job of organizing and planning, and we assume that all those volunteer spots will be filled as they have been in the past. There are no guarantees they will be filled and it was a little close last year. If we have a Parish and Family Life Commission, it would make sure that we have a Feast Day Committee that would strengthen and solidify the future of our Feast Day celebration. If Feast Day is a parish celebration and it is valuable to our parish, it is the people that make up that parish that need to make sure it happens. The pastor and the parish staff need to be a part of helping with Feast Day, but we can’t assume that everyone will always be there to “pull it off”. It is healthy for the community if the knowledge and experience are connected to many members and not limited to a few. Now is the time to acknowledge and be prepared, because we cannot assume that things are always going to be the same. It will require that more than a few make sure that things of value remain.
Your brother in Christ, Fr. Tom
Faith Formation of Children
PAINTING ICONS Students in the Intermediate atrium (grades 4-6) have been painting icons as part of their study of the Saints of the church. Each child chose a saint to research. Students then engaged in a painting process on wooden plaques. They drew the saint, including appropriate symbols, and then painted the image. These icons will be sealed and varnished, then blessed by Fr. Tom.
BAPTISMS Baptisms are currently being scheduled after Easter. Parents and godparents are asked to attend a class prior to baptism to prepare themselves for their role as Christian parents and witnesses of the faith. These classes are scheduled as needed. To register for baptismal dates and/or a class, please contact Anne Marie in the church office. DIOCESAN YOUTH CHOIR FEST All students in grades 3-12 are invited to participate in the Diocesan Youth Choir Fest on April 30th. The festival will begin at noon and conclude with Mass at 4:30 at St. Columba Cathedral. Participants will spend the day learning about choral music and participating in a variety of activities related to vocal skills and musical performance at liturgy. There is no cost for the event. For more information or if you are interested, please contact Anne Marie in the church office. SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION Our next family sacramental preparation session is this coming Thursday, March 17th from 6-8pm. We will meet in the Heritage Hall. Letters were sent this past week with menu assignments and details. RECONCILIATION The following children made their First Reconciliation along with their families this past week. We congratulate them on their celebration of sacramental life and thank their parents and families for their support and prayers.
SEEKING MEMBERS FOR A FEAST DAY COMMITTEE! We are seeking members to be on a Feast Day Committee who would help plan and organize the day’s events. Contact the office at 330-452-9539 to place your name on the list. Thank you!!

FAMILY PERSPECTIVE: Stoning is not just an ancient act of violence. Each day in our homes we throw stones of ridicule, criticism, name-calling and put-downs. All of it is deadly. Hear Jesus in today’s gospel: “Whoever is without sin can throw the first stone.” Rid your home of violence. Stop verbal stoning!
Lent 2016
HUNGERING TO GROW A NEW TOMORROW This week’s CRS Rice Bowl country is the island nation of Madagascar, where we’re reminded of the important role farmers play in caring for God’s creation. As we prepare our meals throughout the week, let us reflect on where our food comes from—and what role we can play in caring for our environment. Visit crsricebowl.org for more.
