Fourth Sunday of Lent 1 Sm 16:1b, 6-7, 10-13a; Ps 23:1-3a, 3b-4, 5, 6; Eph 5:8-14;

Jn 9:1-41 or 9:1, 6-9, 13-17, 34-38

The Liturgy of this Sunday, called “Laetare”, invites us to be glad and rejoice as

the Entrance Antiphon of the Eucharistic celebration proclaims: “Rejoice,

Jerusalem! Be glad for her, you who love her; rejoice with her, you who mourned

for her, and you will find contentment at her consoling breasts” (cf. Is 66: 10-11).

What is the profound reason for this joy? Today’s Gospel in which Jesus heals a

man blind from birth tells us. The question which the Lord Jesus asks the blind

man is the high point of the story: “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” (Jn

9:35). The man recognizes the sign worked by Jesus and he passes from the light

of his eyes to the light of faith: “Lord, I believe!” (Jn 9:38). It should be noted

that as a simple and sincere person he gradually completes the journey of faith.

In the beginning he thinks of Jesus as a “man” among others, then he considers

him a “prophet” and finally his eyes are opened and he proclaims him “Lord”. In

opposition to the faith of the healed blind man is the hardening of the hearts of

the Pharisees who do not want to accept the miracle because they refuse to

receive Jesus as the Messiah. Instead the crowd pauses to discuss the event and

continues to be distant and indifferent. Even the blind man’s parents are

overcome by the fear of what others might think.

And what attitude to Jesus should we adopt? Because of Adam’s sin we too are

born “blind” but in the baptismal font we are illumined by the grace of Christ.

Sin wounded humanity and destined it to the darkness of death, but the newness

of life shines out in Christ, as well as the destination to which we are called. In

him, reinvigorated by the Holy Spirit, we receive the strength to defeat evil and

to do good. In fact the Christian life is a continuous conformation to Christ,

image of the new man, in order to reach full communion with God. The Lord

Jesus is the “light of the world” (Jn 8:12), because in him shines “the knowledge

of the glory of God” (2 Cor 4:6) that continues in the complex plot of the story to

reveal the meaning of human existence. In the rite of Baptism, the presentation of

the candle lit from the large Paschal candle, a symbol of the Risen Christ, is a

sign that helps us to understand what happens in the Sacrament. When our lives

are enlightened by the mystery of Christ, we experience the joy of being liberated

from all that threatens the full realization. In these days which prepare us for

Easter let us rekindle within us the gift received in Baptism, that flame which

sometimes risks being extinguished. Let us nourish it with prayer and love for

others.

Let us entrust our Lenten journey to the Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church so

that all may encounter Christ, Saviour of the world.

La liturgia de este domingo, denominado «Laetare», nos invita a alegrarnos, a

regocijarnos, como proclama la antífona de entrada de la celebración eucarística:

«Festejad a Jerusalén, gozad con ella, todos los que la amáis; alegraos de su alegría,

los que por ella llevasteis luto; mamaréis a sus pechos y os saciaréis de sus

consuelos» (cf. Is 66, 10-11). ¿Cuál es la razón profunda de esta alegría? Nos lo dice

el Evangelio de hoy, en el cual Jesús cura a un hombre ciego de nacimiento. La

pregunta que el Señor Jesús dirige al que había sido ciego constituye el culmen de la

narración: «¿Crees tú en el Hijo del hombre?» (Jn 9, 35). Aquel hombre reconoce el

signo realizado por Jesús y pasa de la luz de los ojos a la luz de la fe: «Creo, Señor»

(Jn 9, 38). Conviene destacar cómo una persona sencilla y sincera, de modo gradual,

recorre un camino de fe: en un primer momento encuentra a Jesús como un

«hombre» entre los demás; luego lo considera un «profeta»; y, al final, sus ojos se

abren y lo proclama «Señor». En contraposición a la fe del ciego curado se encuentra

el endurecimiento del corazón de los fariseos que no quieren aceptar el milagro,

porque se niegan a aceptar a Jesús como el Mesías. La multitud, en cambio, se

detiene a discutir sobre lo acontecido y permanece distante e indiferente. A los

propios padres del ciego los vence el miedo del juicio de los demás.

Y nosotros, ¿qué actitud asumimos frente a Jesús? También nosotros a causa del

pecado de Adán nacimos «ciegos», pero en la fuente bautismal fuimos iluminados

por la gracia de Cristo. El pecado había herido a la humanidad destinándola a la

oscuridad de la muerte, pero en Cristo resplandece la novedad de la vida y la meta a

la que estamos llamados. En él, fortalecidos por el Espíritu Santo, recibimos la fuerza

para vencer el mal y obrar el bien. De hecho, la vida cristiana es una continua

configuración con Cristo, imagen del hombre nuevo, para alcanzar la plena

comunión con Dios. El Señor Jesús es «la luz del mundo» (Jn 8, 12), porque en él

«resplandece el conocimiento de la gloria de Dios» (2 Co 4, 6) que sigue revelando

en la compleja trama de la historia cuál es el sentido de la existencia humana. En el

rito del Bautismo, la entrega de la vela, encendida en el gran cirio pascual, símbolo

de Cristo resucitado, es un signo que ayuda a comprender lo que ocurre en el

Sacramento. Cuando nuestra vida se deja iluminar por el misterio de Cristo,

experimenta la alegría de ser liberada de todo lo que amenaza su plena realización.

En estos días que nos preparan para la Pascua revivamos en nosotros el don recibido

en el Bautismo, aquella llama que a veces corre peligro de apagarse. Alimentémosla

con la oración y la caridad hacia el prójimo.

A la Virgen María, Madre de la Iglesia, encomendamos el camino cuaresmal, para

que todos puedan encontrar a Cristo, Salvador del mundo.
