MARCH2016

Pastor’s Page: Praying Along Our Lenten Journeys

As we continue to walk these 40 days of Lent toward Christ suffering and death upon the cross, it remains a time for us to draw nearer to God and to turn away from those things that distract us from doing so, including sin, idols, indifference toward others, and the busy-ness of our schedules. In all of these cases, there are two tools I believe God has given us to make sure we do draw nearer to God. Those two things are reading God’s Word, and building a relationship with God through prayer.

In preparing this article, I have reread the Gospel of Luke (the gospel we are working through in the lectionary this year), from Jesus’ triumphal entrance in Jerusalem to Christ’s death on the cross looking for the many ways Jesus prayed, or made reference to it. Some of these ways he prayed, might be ways you are already praying, such as to bless the food before eating it (Luke 22:17,19). And then there were other times he either prays or makes mention to prayer that might make us think of other times and ways that we too should be praying. So I’ll lift these all up as opportunities for us to draw nearer to God in all circumstances as we contemplate prayer during Jesus final days on earth, pre-resurrection.

Even right as Jesus was preparing to enter Jerusalem, he spends time weeping over it (Luke 19:11), because he knows they have rejected the ways of the Lord, but as the Lord he loves them anyway. I suspect much in the same way parents wish their children made better choices, that would bring them peace, life, and happiness. Secondly, he enters the temple, cleansing it all folks trying to do business in the temple instead of praying and worshiping there, so as he drives them out, he says “My house shall be a house of prayer.” (Luke 19:46) This encourages us to use our church in the same way, and so especially from Maundy Thursday-Good Friday Service, I encourage you to come to church and take some time to pray in the house of the Lord.

Another time Jesus encourages prayer is when he tells the disciples to “pray that you may not come into the time of trial” (Luke 22:40,46), while Jesus goes and pleas with his Father saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup (of suffering) from me; yet, not my will but yours be done” (Luke 22:42). In these two references, prayer is useful for times when we feel tempted, and times when we feel burdened by suffering, or hopeless about what might be coming our way, yet praying for God’s will, not ours. These are ways in which we can pray too. Everyone could pray that they wouldn’t fall into a time of trial, or for God to take away his/her suffering. This is all good because it encourages conversation between us and our God in all circumstances, but how Jesus ends his prayer concerning suffering, is all encompassing, when he prays “but not my will, but yours be done.” This allows us to bring before God our plea, but to let God know that we trust the final outcome about how things need to be, in God’s hands, but not ours. For we are not all-knowing and sometimes when we pray for a person to live, the life they live in the Lord and with the Lord, might be way better off than the life they might continue to live with us in pain. This is not easy, but often when we pray to God over and over God does more to help us change by strengthening us, or helping us to see our ways are not always God’s ways (Isaiah 55:8-9 ) but prayer can help us to accept God’s ways or trust that if we must suffer that God will be there with us (Matt. 28:20) and working for the good of those who love him.(8:28). This trust can go as far as helping us admit that sometimes death on earth, only to begin living life everlasting with God in eternity is a blessing, but only if it is God’s will and not our choosing.

And later, despite his suffering, Jesus prays for the forgiveness of those who are persecuting him (Luke 22:34). This one is perhaps the biggest reason why people choose to leave the body of Christ, or stop being active in a church because they have gotten their feelings hurt, or been divided with other brother and sisters on an issue and failed to turn this

Page 3: Web viewC. A. R. E. L. E. T. T. E. R. MARCH. 2016. TRI POINT . LUTHERAN PARISH. St. John’s Lutheran Church. PO Box 188. Ohiowa, NE 68416. 402.295.2324. First Evangelical

hurt over to God and were unable to ask for forgiveness for the actions of another. Well when we let little divisions like this separate us, then we are not following the ways of the Lord, but our own ways. Prayer in such cases can help mend brokenness, help one another mature in being like-minded with Christ, and restore peace back to God’s house.

Now, I don’t know what examples of prayer might speak to your heart with God’s this week, but please know, any and all efforts and time we put into connecting with God through prayer will indeed draw us nearer to the Lord.

And as we pray more, may the Peace be with you on your journey to the cross with Christ,

Pastor Becky Sells <><

Tri Point Lutheran ParishFebruary 2016 Meeting Minutes

February 9, 2016, 7:00pm

Members present: Nancy Meyer (POP), Gaylord Cradduck (SJ), Kathy Barnes (FLC), Pastor Becky, Joseph ChapmanMembers absent: Tim Stacy (FLC), Ruth Drake (SJ), Clark Poppert (POP), Pastor James

Devotions were led by Pastor Becky.

JOYS AND CONCERNS ACROSS THE PARISHPastor Becky acknowledged many exciting developments throughout the parish, including the approval of a capital campaign plan for the building project at Prince of Peace from the annual meeting, the installation of new doors at First Lutheran, a new organ at St. John’s, and an additional organist to play services at First. The board also was pleased to report that the annual meetings of all three churches went well and that each church was continuing to adjust to the increased unification of the parish.

SCHEDULED BUSINESS

Election of OfficersThe members present agreed to keep the officer slate identical to 2015. It was noted that with the parish administrative secretary present at all board meetings and taking minutes, it was less necessary to have an official Secretary within the board. Only if Joseph is unable to attend will this position be necessary.

OLD BUSINESS

Parish Administrative Secretary Duties and New Office Computer/SoftwareBoard members asked parish administrative secretary Joseph Chapman about the addition of treasurer’s duties to his workload and whether more time was needed to complete these tasks. Joseph noted that he did not have any issues incorporating these obligations into his schedule but did state that these tasks would run

smoother once the parish financial records were transferred from the Prince of Peace treasurer’s files to the parish office. The board discussed the purchase of a new computer for the parish office, which had been discussed at previous board meetings; Joseph suggested a model that would fit the needs of the parish at approximately half the allotted budget of two thousand dollars. The board suggested that some of the extra funds be used to purchase necessary software for the new computer.

The new computer and software will be purchased soon.

NEW BUSINESS

Lent Services and Easter ScheduleIt was noted that Prince of Peace would hold Ash Wednesday services on February 10th with no meal preceding service. St. John’s and First Lutheran would hold Mid-Week Lenten Services on February 17th and February 24th respectively, with a sloppy joe meal at 6:00 p.m. and services following at 7:00 p.m. Continuing into March, Prince of Peace would hold Mid-Week Service on the 2nd, St. John’s on the 9th, and First Lutheran on the 16th. During Holy Week, Maundy Thursday services will be held at Prince of Peace at 7:30 p.m., Good Friday services will be held at St. John’s at 7:30 p.m., and the Easter Sunrise service will be held at First Lutheran at 7:00am. Sunrise service will be inside this year because Easter is so early and it will be cold outside.

Becky reported that the “Now the Feast and Celebration” liturgy would be used at the Ash Wednesday service, and the mid-week services would feature the Holden Evening Prayer liturgy.

VBSPastor Becky stated that planning for Vacation Bible School, which would be held at Prince of Peace from June

6th through June 8th in the mornings, was moving along. In McCool Junction, VBS is to be held at First Lutheran in conjunction with the United Methodist Church during evenings at the end of July. Finally, for St. John’s, it was noted that most of the parents do not work in Geneva but instead in communities such as Hebron and Carleton, so a consideration would be to seek out Vacation Bible Schools in those towns.

Parish Hymn SelectionGaylord noted that there was a discussion at the St. John’s annual meeting for the church to return to selecting their own hymns due to parishioners’ unfamiliarity with some of the hymns selected by other churches. The board discussed how this would create more Worship Committee meetings for the pastors to attend each month, as well as three separate inserts to be created each week. The board recommended that the churches of the parish continue to pick hymns in turn as it encourages the unity of the parish.

Other New BusinessPastor Becky reported that Confirmation services would be held at Prince of Peace on May 1st because they are

the only church to have students being confirmed this year.

It was also noted that while it was not a typical camp attendance year for youth in the parish, several children who could not attend last year would be going to camp this summer.

Finally, Pastor Becky brought up the idea of a parish-wide mission trip and considered when and where the trip should be held, and what interest there was in such a trip throughout the parish.

Next MeetingThe next meeting of the Tri Point Lutheran Parish board was scheduled for Thursday, April 21st at 7:00p.m. Proposed discussion items for the meeting include further discussion of Confirmation services and summer plans.

The board closed with the Lord’s Prayer and the meeting was adjourned at 8:00 p.m.
