AAP scores a goal with local youngsters
The Bishop Auckland and Shildon Area Action Part-nership (AAP) scored a goal with football loving youngsters by providing funding to enable coaching sessions to continue.Shildon Junior League provides coaches and league games for children aged between five and sixteen in Shildon and
Members of Shildon Junior League, who meet on a Saturday morning.
the surrounding area on Saturday mornings in Hackworth Park. The AAP, together with councillors David Hancock and Garry Huntington, awarded £3,500 from the small grants fund and neighbourhood budget. The funding has enabled more than 100 young people to take part in a 10
week football programme within Shildon. Elaine Jennings, from Shildon Junior Football League, said, “This funding has enabled the young people to be part of a team, gain valuable experience in sport along with the physical benefits, but most of all have a fun time with their families.“The league is extremely grateful to receive this funding, without which the activity could not be run.”Alan Boddy, chair of the task and finish group for the AAP, said, “The AAP is committed to supporting projects of this nature, which have such a positive impact on the health and wellbeing of children and young people in our community.“It is also as important that we recognise and value the incredible commitment of the volunteers involved.”For more information about the Shildon Junior League, contact Elaine Jennings on 07854 814 546.Bishop Auckland and Shildon Area Action Part-nership is one of 14 set up by Durham County Council in 2009.
The Maternity Ward at Bishop Auckland Hospital is to close its doors for two months due to a shortage of qualified midwives.Expectant mothers who have planned to give birth at the hospital next month will have little time to make new arrange-ments, as the unit will be closed from 2nd July and will not reopen until 5th September.Parents have been told that they must now choose to have their babies at either Darlington Memorial Hospital or the University Hospital of North Durham during this time.Representatives of Darlington NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the maternity ward, say that the closure is due to a combination of staff on long term-sickness or leaving the hospital to work elsewhere.Although new midwives
are currently being recruited, they won’t be available to work until early September, and bosses feel that it would be unsafe to keep the ward open while it is un-derstaffed. Durham County Council’s Adults Wellbeing and Health Overview and Scrutiny Committee is to raise concerns about the closure.Cllr Robin Todd chair of the scrutiny committee said, “Members have considered these proposals and identified a number of concerns and we need reassurance and guarantees.“The biggest concern is communities not having a service close by for a set period of time and the effect this will have on expectant mothers.”The Overview and Scrutiny Committee will write to the trust to let them know of their concerns.

Funding is music to the ears
Children at the St John’s Toddler Group, St. John’s Church Hall, Shildon with Musician Bridie Jackson from The Sage, Gateshead.
Funding is music to the ears of a group of youngsters set to benefit from The Bishop Auckland and Shildon Area Action Partnership. (AAP)A Shildon toddler group has been granted funding from Youth Music to enable them to benefit from visits from The Sage Gateshead’s early years team.Additional funding of £952 from the AAP will pay for music sacks which will encourage children to find a love of music whilst developing skills and increasing musical op-portunities available in the local area. The project will run until January next year and will benefit St John’s
Toddler group which meets in St John’s Church Hall in Shildon, as well as Leeholme Toddler Group which meets in Leeholme Community Centre.Alan Boddy, Activities for Children and Young People Task and Finish Group lead, said, “Engaging young people at such an early age with music is a fantastic idea, one which the AAP fully endorses.”Durham Sub-committee of the Pre-school Learning Alliance was successful in gaining £30,000 of funding from Youth Music to support toddler groups in the area.Janine Jackson senior development worker with
the Pre-school Learning Alliance said, “The match funding received from Bishop Auckland and Shildon AAP will enable us to buy groups some music sacks which could be loaned to the families to take home, thus spreading the project even further as it will allow for whole families to participate in music making. “The groups will be able to loan these out to even more families and can be loaned for many years to come.” For further information, contact Shelly Richardson on 07952 555 082 or email [email protected].
Magistrates at Newton Aycliffe had no option other than to adjourn matters when Jin Xiang Lin appeared before them. Mr. Lin was able to confirm his name but it was clear that charges could not be put due to the defendant’s limited understanding of
English. The 38 year-old faces charges that on 7th June he drove a Citroen Xsara on Heighington Lane without a licence and whilst using a handheld mobile phone. Matters will return to the court on 6th July.

Community cleans up with loan equipment schemeShildon Children and Young People’s Action Network (SCYPAN) have secured funding from Bishop Auckland and Shildon AAP to introduce an innovative loan scheme into the local community.Special kits will be purchased to be loaned to the community for bulb planting and litter clearing exercises. The kits, containing litter pickers, rigger gloves, high visibility vests and storage bags, will provide a hands-on learning opportunity and encourage responsibility and pride in the local community. A Public Announce-ment system will also be purchased, to be loaned out to youth clubs, outdoor
events and out of school activities across Shildon and the surrounding area.Derrick Robinson, Chair of SCYPAN, said, “Various community groups have expressed their interest in a PA system for events such as church fetes, carnivals and even bingo sessions. “The litter picking equipment is in much demand from Youth Clubs and Youth Organisations, with a keen desire from the young people to keep their town and local areas clean. “With the help from the Bishop Auckland and Shildon AAP, we can now provide these things to the local community.’The Bishop Auckland and Shildon Area Action
Partnership (AAP) got together with Councillors David Hancock and Garry Huntington, to award £1,847 from the small grants fund and neighbourhood budget. Alan Boddy, Chair of the Task and Finish group said, “We are delighted to be supporting such an innovate project, which highlights the enthusiasm that young people have for their com-munities.”The scheme follows on from the recent Litter Free Durham campaign and SCYPAN will be organising future litter picks. To get involved with SCYPAN, contact Tracey Bellas on 01388 772563 or email [email protected].

The Civic Hall in Shildon will be holding it's first ever tea party when Centre Stage puts on its production of Alice in Wonderland from Thursday 14th July to Sunday 17th July. The story follows Alice's magical journey through "Wonderland" as she becomes very curious and follows the White Rabbit.Join Alice in Wonderland as she meets some very strange creatures from the White Rabbit that is always late and the very busy Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, to the mouse who
always wants to sleep, the dancing (but very rude) flowers and the Royal Family with a very loud, evil Queen of Hearts.A spokesperson for the theatre group said, “So, will Alice really be in Wonderland or will she be very much like the Mouse and dream the adventure away? “Whilst you all decide throughout the show, there will be plenty of great music for all ages to enjoy, and, who knows we might all be dancing through this Wonderland of strange tea parties and
even stanger court cases. So if your young or old, come along for a great couple of hours enter-tainment, Thursday and Friday at 7.30pm or at the weekend with both shows starting at 2pm.”To pre-book your ticket, which can be collected on the door before the show, call 01388 774838 or 01325 313363. “We have even cheaper seats available for the Thursday show, so give us a ring today, see you at the show, and remember "Don’t be Late”, continued the spokesperson.

Dear Editor,
I bet the person who owns the cockerel on the allotments out the back of Braithwaite Street does not get woken up by it just after 4am every morning!!
Cannot even sleep with my window open on warm nights at present....not that having it closed would drown out the noise of it!!
From a Braithwaite Street resident.Name withheld on request.
Dear Editor,
Reading The Town Crier made me realise that it is 35 years since I left Shildon. Birthday notices for Elaine Anderson and Robin Hacker's dads brought that statistic to the fore.
It was way back in 1976 that I left Shildon County Junior Mixed, in which I was class mates with Elaine and Robin. How time flies, but Shildon and the class of 1976 is always close to my heart.
I even remember daft things like when our class went to Stubb House, Robin tried to convince us that the jam was caviar. I still regularly visit Shildon and every time I'm there I trace back all my happy memories and always hope I bump into old class mates such as Elaine, Robin, David Peareth, Christine Parker, Mandy Bolton, Mark Robertson, Andrew Vasey, David Brown, Andrew Smith, Kevin Snowden,I an Storey, Dawn Spence, Philip Rowley. I could on for ever. I also have to mention Mr Denham who coached me for the football team.
Sadly places like Jacques, Elliots and the Friday Market are no longer part of the town. I still remember the kipper heads (with the eyes still in) staring at me on my way home to Lime Grove/Jubilee Road.
I still come down and see Shildon play, which means getting the train down at 7am on a Saturday morning from Scotland. As a kid my greatest moment was seeing the team win the Durham Challenge cup and, in recent years, I actually saw them get to the first round proper of the FA Cup for the first time in my lifetime. Seeing Shildon's name come out of the hat on the television at Dean Street made me feel so proud of being a Shildon lad.
1975 (the year prior to moving back to Scotland) was also a big year for the town, and I remember our class writing songs which were published. ‘Shildon Shildon Happy Old Shildon’ was my ditty. ‘Shildon is a windy place’ was the winning song, however.
We had the Queen Mum visit, and to this day I still put people right by telling them that the first passenger train started at Shildon and not Darlington. I still have my Royal George/Timothy Hackworth mug which Dufay Paints gave us all.
The class of 76 will be 46/47 now. It would be great hearing how some of them are doing and to share a vodka and umbongo with some of them on my next visits. Could you maybe publish my email address in the event that any of them would like to catch up?
Thank YouGraham [email protected]
Dear Editor,
I wish to express my disappointment at the way in which the Peppa Pig visit at the Locomotion was ran.
I arrived at 1.30pm with my daughter and stood in a queue outside, which then eventually moved slowly towards the inside of the museum, which went ¾ of the way up. A member of staff came to tell us that we could stay in the queue if we wanted but probably won’t get the chance for a photo as they were going in the half hour. We waited and then suddenly without any notice Peppa and George left, leaving loads of children deeply upset that they stood for nearly 2-3 hours without seeing what they went for.
I have to say the way in which it was organised was absolutely terrible and they can’t say that they weren’t expecting that many people as it was a nice day and children love peppa.
They would have done better as a pre-booked time slots for people, like they do for the Santa visit. That way they wouldn’t have had all those disappointed children, and that way they would have been able to handle the amount of visitors as they would have known numbers before hand. I am sure I ain’t the only parent with a disappointed child!
Name and address witheld on request.
Dear Editor,
“Shildon Corps was long thought to be officially opened in June 1911, although there is a quote from "The Salvationist" of June 1879 confirming the "opening of New Shildon on Sunday, May 4th 1879", and the appointment in The War Cry, dated December 27th, 1879, of the first officers at Shildon Corps now listed as Old Shildon and New Shildon, Sarah Caswell and Ann Copeley." (A brief history of Shildon salvation Army - Ken Smith 1995). So we missed our first centenary! The corps chose to celebrate the centenary of the 1911 opening of the corps by hosting, over the weekend, a community fun day in recognition of its work in the community with approximately 250 - 300 attending. This was followed by a corps fellowship meal held in the "Locomotion" NRM - recognising the close links with the town’s railway heritage. Special guests for the weekend were Lt.Col. Bill & Gill Heeley who, some thirty years ago, were the Commanding Officers at the corps.Sunday morning worship recognised not only the "birthday" of the corps but of the church, and a "Celebration" meeting included the band, songsters, singing company and timbrels participating with former members joining in.Individual items were also presented by present and former corps members as was a specially composed Band march entitled "Celestial Railway", (incorporating choruses and tunes based on railways), by Bandmaster Kenneth Smith and his brother Deputy Songster Leader Chris Smith. We would like to thank all tose who were involved and helped out in any way to celebrate this milestone in our history. It was a God glorifying weekend - we praise Him and thank Him for His faithful-ness and look forward to what is to come. Many thanksMajor Linda Watson
Dear Editor,
On Sunday I visited the Railway Museum along with my family and three little grandsons.
After standing for one and a half hours we had to come away disappointed at not seeing Pepper Pig and George. It was a complete shambles. I am sure I am not the only one that thought so.
From a very disappointed grandparent,Joyce SnellShildon
Dear Editor,
This year Magistracy celebrates 650 years in office. To mark this historic event two local schools are par-ticipating in a mock trial dating back to the year 1361.
The script has been compiled by one of our legal clerks and the sentence/punishment for the child is throwing apples at the defendant who is placed in the stocks, (the apples are to be replaced with sponges). This would be a memorable event for the schools. Timothy Hackworth School will be participating on Wednesday July 6th from approx 10am, starting with the trial followed by the punishment at approx. 11am, which will take place in the school yard. Thornhill Primary School has yet to confirm when their mock trial will be taking place.

Locomotion: The National Railway Museum at Shildon will welcome vintage and classic tractors and stationary engines of all descriptions to the Vintage & Classic Tractor Rally on Sunday July 10th.There will be a range of vehicles on display, including a Ferguson TEA-20 from 1948. This TEA-20 is one of the earliest examples, manufactured in January 1948, just a month after the prototypes were first tested. If you own a classic or vintage tractor or stationary engine, there’s still time to get involved. The event is open to ag-ricultural and construc-tion machinery of all descriptions – from small stationary engines tradi-tionally used to drive hand
tools; to larger ploughing engines, traction engines, and traditional tractors.Sharon Thorburn, the museum’s Front of House Officer, said, “Locomotion celebrates the region’s railway heritage, and our collection includes an impressive display of loco-motives. “But some of the technology used in steam locomotives was also used by stationary engines and the earliest tractors. We hope that our Vintage Tractors Rally gives visitors the chance to learn more about these powerful machines.”If you’d like to register your vehicle for the event, contact Pam Porter, Events Officer, by telephone on 01388 771445 or by emailing [email protected].
Close encounters of the bird kind
The New Shildon All Saints Baden Powell Scout Group were enthralled by a visit from birds of prey last Friday evening at their meeting held in the Mission Hall in New Shildon. The Gosling Raptors brought along birds and told the scouts details of their lifestyles, diets, habitats and how they are cared for. The Beavers were quite alarmed to find out that
some of the larger birds would think of the smaller birds as prey – and would attack and eat them if the handlers didn’t keep them apart! All of the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts that wanted to could handle Clyde the barn owl. The leaders were also very keen to handle the birds, with the scout leader taking the opportunity to hold Storm, a common
buzzard and a formidable bird of prey. Zeus the European Owl, and Sprite, a young Eagle Owl, were also introduced to the group and many photograph opportunities were taken as souvenirs. If you are interested in joining the group the Beavers can be contacted on 07587 961 271 or if birds of prey interest you then you can contact the Gosling Raptors on 07855 371 661.

Good night had by allThe Grey Horse Over 40s held their Presentation Night on Saturday 25th June.Team secretary Dave Bulleyment opened pro-ceedings with the fantastic news that Barrier Energy from Shildon had agreed to sponsor the team for the 2011-2012 season. As well as hopefully playing well, the team will be looking good in a new set of strips. The presentation night was a great success with most of the team, officials and their partners and friends attending. “A big thanks goes out to
the young lads of the band "Audio Ignition" for keeping us all entertained,” said a spokesperson. Two trophies were up for grabs. The first was Player of the Season. This is awarded to the player with the most man-of-the-match awards over the season and was won by john Myers (Scouse). The second is Players’ Player and is voted for by team mates. This went to Kev Costello who, since moving into defence, has found his niche, always gives 100% and is not afraid to go in hard.
Etherley hosted Shildon in the Under 13’s latest match.Etherley batted first and scored 15 runs for the loss of 15 wickets, which when converted made 95 for the loss of 15 wickets. It was a magnificent performance from the youngsters, with many of them turning in career-best figures. Special mentions to C. Witton for a top-class wicket-keeping display
