People in Shildon are being invited to check out new and improved fitness facilities next month.The fitness suite at Shildon-Sunnydale Leisure Centre has undergone a £250,000 transformation, with new facilities including vibration plates, weights and a studio area.The gym is owned and operated by Durham County Council in partnership with private company Com-petition Line, which has provided the investment.An open weekend is being held between September 10th and 12th to encourage local people to go along and find out what is on offer.Members will benefit from unlimited use of the fitness club and classes at Shildon-Sunnydale Leisure Centre as well as free swimming at Spennymoor and Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centres.Durham County Leisure also offer free individual fitness

programmes, reviews and one-to-one appointments with fitness instructors.Councillor Maria Plews, Cabinet member for leisure, libraries and lifelong learning at Durham County Council, said, “These new facilities offer people in Shildon and the surrounding area a great opportunity to improve their health and fitness.“Fully trained staff can help people to develop a fitness routine that suits them as well as offering encourage-ment and support.“We look forward to welcoming people to the new fitness suite during the open weekend.”The investment in Shildon Sunnydale Leisure Centre follows a previous investment by Competi-tion Line earlier this year in Spennymoor Leisure Centre, which is also run by Durham County Council in partnership with the company.

Jubilee Fields celebrates 10th year

Some people said that the Jubilee Fields Community Centre would be lucky to last six months, but the great support and huge community spirit of our local community has proved the doubters wrong, as the centre celebrated it’s tenth anniversary last Sunday. A family fun day was held in celebration of the achieve-ment, which featured a

ventriloquist act and a cake sale.Local residents spent six years raising the £600,000 needed to build the community centre which has become a venue for many activity groups for people of all ages. Before the centre was built, more than 150 children were meeting at an old hut next to the current site for their

play scheme, while discos were held in the nearby workingmen’s club.Barbara Fuller, one of the original campaigners for the centre said, “This centre has taken 16 years of my life, but it has all been worth it. The hut we were using just wasn’t fit for purpose and the disco at the club was not the most appropriate for children.“It was a long hard slog to get the funding together and the residents gave as much as they could. The rest was from lottery grants. Some said the centre wouldn’t last six months, but I feel smug to say we are still going strong.”The past ten years haven’t been plain sailing by any means – at one time the centre faced imminent closure and was saved only by a last minute grant.Barbara continued saying, “Times have been tough and there was a point a few years ago where we thought that could be it…but, thankfully the last grant we were hoping for came through. “Today I would say we are doing well, although our play workers are funded by Children in Need only until April, so we still have a lot of work to do.”

The Centre has provided services to the public for the past decade.

Last week the mayor of Shildon, Ann Hammond, was pleased to present a lovely bouquet of flowers to well-known Shildon couple John & Doreen Lonsdale to celebrate their 60th an-niversary.John, 84, was born in Horden and Doreen, 80, in Darlington. They met when they both worked at Alexandra’s Gents’ Clothing Factory in Darlington as cutters. John left school at 14 and started at Shaw Knight’s Earthenware factory in Fylands. He joined the Army when he was 18, spending one year in Egypt and three years in Austria.He began working in Alex-andra’s in 1948, and then moved onto Morris’ Fur Factory in Shildon.Doreen’s first job was in the gowns department in Binns, Darlington, where she stayed for 3 years before joining Alexandra’s.

Two years before the couple married, they got engaged at St John’s Church on New Years Eve. They were married on 25th August 1951 at St. Mary’s Church in Darlington.In 1950 the lovely couple opened their first shop on the Jubilee Estate selling groceries, staying there for 21 years. In the early 70s they opened a Ladies Clothing Fashion Factory Outlet on South Church Industrial Estate. After they married they acquired a key workers home in Elm Drive, later moving to Auckland Terrace, then Middridge. They then spent 18 years in Woodham Village before residing in their current address in Regent Street for the last seven years.The sprightly couple have three children, Ian, Kevin and Debra as well as six grand-children.In their earlier days, John was a keen sprinter and

quite a solid golfer with a good handicap. Doreen was also quite athletic, playing tennis, table tennis and going cycling. She also went walking with the Youth Clubs.They both love their holidays, which bring back happy memories. Years ago, Doreen drove all the way to Italy in their cramped car, full of children and luggage. The family have also motored to Spain. One of their favourite holiday resorts is Lanzarote, where they have been going for 17 years, sometimes staying for long spells.The couple say their marriage has been so successful because they have done everything together, not only at home but also at work.They celebrated their wonderful occasion with a large gathering of family and friends at a marquee organised at their son’s home.

Close was broken into sometime overnight on Tuesday 30th August. Items stolen from the garage include an orange coloured Flymo lawn mower, Flymo hedge trimmer, a Flymo garden hoover, 24 V Dewalt drill and a Karcher pressure washer.

• A front wheel was stolen from a Ford Fiesta parked on Adelaide Bank sometime overnight on Friday 26th August.

• A set of aluminium table and chairs were stolen from the rear yard of an address on Church Street on the afternoon of Saturday 27th August between 1pm and 3pm.

• A storage unit was broken into at the Redworth House care home on Byerley Road overnight

Police appealson Sunday 21st August. Items stolen from within included a red Argos Lawn mower, a green power washer and five gallons of truck wash.

A vehicle was broken into around 11.30am on Friday 26th August whilst parked in the church yard of St John’s church in Church Street. Witnesses saw three males commit the crime and take property from the vehicle including a lap top and a Sat Nav unit. Local officers were able to respond quickly and made three arrests at a nearby address and recovered all of the stolen property. This is a very good example of the police working closely with the public to solve crime and get the criminals off the streets. “If you witness anything that you think is suspicious please let us know as quickly as you can,” said a police spokesperson.Anyone with information on the above incidents is urged to call police on 0345 60 60 365.

Shildon Carer found guilty of assaultLocal care home worker Phoebe Lorraine Smith was found guilty of assault at Newton Aycliffe Magis-trates Court last week. Smith, 54, of Dale Road in Shildon was the key worker for 23 year-old Deborah Thomas at Redworth House Care Home in Shildon, when the assault took place on April 11th. Miss Thomas has severe learning difficulties, epilepsy and has the mental age of a seven or eight year-old.The court heard how Smith and two other care home workers - Julie Ross and Janice Gallant - had taken Miss Thomas for a walk when she started to misbehave. She was biting and nipping and had been sitting on the ground and refusing to get up. On their return to Redworth House, Miss Thomas kicked off her shoe approaching the lift

as Smith and Miss Ross tried to get her to her feet. As they entered the lift, Smith slapped Miss Thomas across the face, bringing her to tears.Smith claimed she stumbled and hit Miss Thomas by accident. Miss Ross gave evidence in court saying, “I saw her (Smith) make contact with Debrah’s face. I went home and was quite shocked – I was awake all night thinking about it because it shouldn’t have happened.”Miss Ross and Mrs Gallant reported the incident to their manager, Marie Gibson who then suspended Phoebe Lorraine Smith following the incident.Smith claimed that there was insufficient staff to cope with Miss Thomas whilst they were out of the home, and that she was not properly trained in how to care for her in

difficult situations. Joanne Elliot, an area manager for Southern Cross Healthcare said, “All staff at Redworth House receive training and support in line with Southern Cross policy. There are strict internal procedures in place to protect our residents and staff.”In mitigation Craig Hunn told the court, “Care workers and their like must be the only job in the country where you can be expected to be bitten, scratched, nipped and punched and just take it. This doesn’t justify what happened, but might give an explanation as to why she had a momentary lapse of control.”Magistrates found Smith guilty of assault and rec-ommended a community order. The case has been adjourned pending pre-sentence reports.

Fundraiser for ChelseaThe Fox and Hounds pub in Shildon Market Place is hosting a fundraiser in aid of local girl Chelsea Rowley, who is seriously ill with an extremely rare form of vasculitis. Fourteen year-old Chelsea lives in Jubilee Road in Shildon and goes to Sunnydale School. Up until March 19th this year, Chelsea was just a normal, healthy, active teenager – when she woke up with a splitting headache and was violently sick. Within a few hours she was delirious and unable to walk. She was rushed to Darlington Hospital, then transferred to Newcastle RVI, where she slipped into a coma-like state. After many test and a brain biopsy, doctors diagnosed her with central nervous system vasculitis, which is the swelling of the small blood vessels in the brain. This is extremely rare and Chelsea is the only child in the UK with this illness. Since treatment has started she has now opened her eyes, but Chelsea is still unable to move and talk and is fed through a tube. She is currently facing a four month stay in the RVI Hospital in Newcastle as

she finishes her latest bout of c h e m o t h e r a p y and whilst her home is adapted for her return in a wheelchair. The fundraiser hopes to raise some cash to help contribute towards making Chelsea’s life more comfortable when she returns home, as well as raising the awareness of this very rare disease and helping her family with the staggering costs of travelling to Newcastle every day.There will be fun for all the family starting at 1.30pm on Saturday 10th September.

Activities include face painting, cake stalls, hot food, raffles and an auction. There will also be a junior darts and pool competition at 5pm and an adult darts and dominoes knockout at 7pm.Chelsea’s friends and family wish to thank everyone for their kind support and hope to see you there.

Police are appealing for information after thieves attempted to break into a car overnight between Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th August.The blue Peugeot 206 was parked outside the owner’s home in Station

Street, Shildon when an attempt was made on the passenger door frame with an unknown implement.No entry was gained to the vehicle and nothing was taken. Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0345 60 60 365.

Poetry CornerB.E.R.C.S. Ride Again

(June 18th/19th 2011)

We said goodbye to Eric,As we rode from Morecambe Bay,

With thoughts of “Bring Me Sunshine”,We hoped would come our way!

This was a brand new cycle route,And our hearts were beating faster,As we rode on down the cycle track,

And in and out Lancaster!

Although the sky was full of grey,We were feeling in fine fettle,

As we rode on up through hill and dale,And finally down to Settle!

The climb then out of Settle,Was the toughest of the day,With lots of sweat and gusto,

Three souls made it all the way!

Now down up down to Burnsall,We had now clocked fifty miles!

The sun burst through and showed itself,And gave us warming smiles!

We rode up to the highest point,A place called Greenhow Hill,

Then sped on down to Pateley Bridge,Our bottles there to fill!

Now finally into Boroughbridge,The last stop we’d have that day,

We showered, changed and had a swim,And put our bikes away!

Now Gaz our happy van man,He wasn’t finished yet,

He grabbed himself a bucket,More donations for to get!

Next morning after breakfast,We set away at nine,

With forty miles of flatness,And the weather dry and fine!

Through York and onto Pocklington,Our confidence had grown,

Till one daft sod had gotten lost,He’d gone off on his own!

We phoned and phoned with no reply,And with concern and worry growing,

We stopped for over an hour there,Before his position knowing!

Two riders had gone searching,And luckily tracked him down,We decided then to meet them,At the station – Driffield Town!

We rode on then to Driffield Town,And waited at the station,

The other group we did not meet,So onto our destination!

Our group was now disbanded,And with tempers wearing thin!We headed off to Bridlington,

All with an angry grin!

From Driffield until Bridlington,We never met again,

Until there at the finish postIn the rides first pouring rain!

With apologies accepted,We shook hands and made a toast,To the route “Way of the Roses”,A new ride from coast to coast!

Boys of Elm Road cycle coast to coast

The Boys of Elm Road Cycling Society (BERCS) recently completed a coast to coast bike ride to raise money for MacMillan Nurses and Cancer Research. This year they dedicated the challenge to the memory of an old friend – Gary Scott – who sadly passed away on Thursday 25th August. His grandson Harley is pictured above with the riders. Eight men completed the gruelling 170 mile

ride - which started in Morecambe and ended at Bridlington. Local taxi firm DA Taxis kindly donated transport to the start and from the finish point for the riders. The poem to the right by rider Neil Franklin goes a long well to tell of the toils encountered on the ride, but ultimately encapsu-lates the great spirit of the riders and the huge effort involved in completing

the challenge - and all the while collecting for charity along the way.Everyone involved collected a grand total of £4,560 which was donated in a 50/50 split to MacMillan Nurses and Cancer Research, the BERCS giving a huge cheque of £2,280 to each charity. The eight riders were B. Burn, G. Coley, I. McMahon, I. Wickens, K. Wild, N. Franklin, P.Wild and S. Hall.

Shildon Railway Under 13s entertained Willington in their last fixture of the season. Shildon were missing a number of key players and posted a paltry 25-5 wickets from their allotted 20 overs, M. Claydon top scoring with 9 not out. In reply Willington

The Town Ladies Bowling team have been catching up on a backlog of fixtures by playing three games in a week.They travelled to North Park and lost 3-1, followed by two home wins; 3-1 against East Park and 4-0 against BedaleThis leaves the team top of the league by 3 points, but they have played one more game than second placed Hundens, who they meet away in their final game.

The only game played in the Readers Durham County League last Saturday was at Brandon and Shildon Railway were the visitors.The weather had again played havoc with the fixture list but Brandon, who are in contention for the league championship title, had ground staff working on the pitch from 7am. Their efforts finally paid off when, having taken an early tea, the umpires declared the match fit to start at 3.30pm.Shildon lost the toss and were soon in trouble as S. Defeat ends season

The season started well for Shildon Grey Horse when, back in early August Dougie Grant scored four goals against Hartlepool Woodcutter. Another win followed in the next match, this time with a solitary goal from new signing Adrian Gough, but it came at a cost as Grant hobbled off and could be out for a number of weeks.A rearranged home fixture followed and a below par performance saw neighbours Darlington Grey Horse cruise to a 4-1 victory against the Shildon side.The most recent game, an away fixture at Washington Cross Keys, saw the team hoping to get the season back on track.The game couldn’t have

Shildon Supports’ Club gathered at the Dean Street ground for a sponsored walk on Bank Holiday Monday. They made their way to Spennymoor Town football ground, where Shildon were set to play. Keeping to the bridal paths they called at Eldon, Gurney Valley, Coundon, Leeholme, Middletone Village and Kirk Merrington, then finally into Spennymoor. They also found time to pop into three watering houses on the way!The amount raised on the day is not yet finalised.The group joined the large crowd at the Brewery Field for the derby game. The first half was an evenly matched affair, with both teams not creating many scoring opportunities.On 10 minutes a Warren Byrne header was saved by keeper Craig Turns, and on 24 minutes a Sam Garvie shot for Moors produced

a flying save from Keith Finch.Near half time, Moors No 10 Gavin Cogdon blasted high over the bar.After the break, Shildon were the better side, with Shildon’s defence winning most of the battles.The Railwaymen were passing the ball around effectively, but not really troubling Moors’ goal enough.On 70 minutes, after good team movement, Shildon’s Warren Byrne missed a decent chance.Moors opened the scoring on 78 minutes. The ball was heading for goal, but Craig Price, standing near the goal-line, stuck his hand up to save the ball entering the net. He was immediately red carded, with No 12 for Moors, John Alexander converting the spot kick.Four minutes later Chris Hunter brought down Moors’ Jamie Poole just inside the area for their

2nd penalty. This time John Alexander’s shot hit the post on the way into the net for 2 - 0.With only two minutes remaining, number 7 for Moors, Craig Ruddy, scored a good goal from outside the box, giving keeper Keith Finch no chance.Final Score: Spennymoor Town 3 Shildon 0.Shildon AFC travel to Guis-borough Town on Saturday 3rd September for the Preliminary Round of the F.A. Cup. On Wednesday 7th September they are at home to local rivals West Auckland Town in the league. Then on Saturday 10th September they visit another local rival Newton Aycliffe, this time in the 1st Round Qualifying in the F.A. Supporters’ Club walk to Spennymoor match

Shildon were shot out for 69.With the weather again beginning to threaten, Brandon eased to victory at 70 for 3, Stephen Ball leading the way with 44.This was the final game of the season, although all other clubs played their final games on Bank Holiday Monday. The 2nd XI’s home game was cancelled due to the ground being unfit. The club hopes that all players, members and supporters will do their best to attend the Senior Presentation Night on Saturday 10th September at 7.30pm in the clubhouse. Donations of bottles for the raffle will be gratefully received.

Grey Horse lose two minutes from time

started any worse, as five minutes in, captain Neil Bannister was dismissed for remonstrating with the referee at the award of a goal which was quite clearly 3 to 4 yards offside.The remaining players got the bit between their teeth and a brilliant response saw goals from Mark Greenwood Kevin Hallimond and Adrian Gough give them a 3-1 lead.All the effort took its toll though as Washington pulled a goal back with 20 minutes to go.With five minutes left on the clock, the equaliser came. A point would of given the Shildon side at least a crumb of comfort but it wasn’t to be as a goal 2 minutes from time left them with a 4-3 defeat and no points.

The Men's team, already relegated, played their final game away at Spennymoor A where they lost 5-0. In the SW Durham league both teams lost 2-8, the A away against Spennymoor Jubilee while the B team were at home to Langley Park. All club members are requested to attend the AGM on Saturday 10th September in the clubhouse at 10.15am.

Top of the league

Under 13s take on Willingtonsome success at under 13 and under 15 level.However the club is in dire need of new talent to enable the junior section to move forward. Interest is welcomed from young cricketers of all ages for next year.
