This has secured the format for what has quickly developed into a highly enjoyable afternoon for many local people. Starting at 12 noon, the friendly Civic Hall staff serve a hot nutritious meal followed by tea, coffee and biscuits. The bar is open for drinks but there are fresh jugs of water provided on all tables. After lunch, you can enjoy a couple of hours of live tea dance music, with Graeme Scarlett playing plenty of well known songs. The Dine and Dance is held on the first Wednesday of each month. The next two events are on Wednesday 6th February and Wednesday 6th March. Sessions cost £5 per person and anyone aged over 50 from the local area is welcome to attend. Dine and Dance Knock next door – be a good neighbour People in Shildon are being encouraged to ‘knock next door’ and help out friends and neighbours during the bad weather. Durham County Council is issuing the call to action as the snow looks set to continue this week. • Be a good neighbour by calling on those living nearby to check if they need anything. • Look after the vulnerable by getting in touch with people who are ill, older or on their own and may need a helping hand. • Keep drives and footpaths clear by clearing snow for friends and neighbours if they struggle to do it themselves. Lesley Jeavons, Durham County Council’s head of adult care, said, “The cold weather can signifi- cantly increase the risks to those who are already vulnerable, so it’s particu- larly important that we look after one another. “We’re asking residents to spare a thought – and perhaps a little of their time – for friends, relatives and neighbours who may struggle in the worst of the winter. Whether it’s phoning an older person to check they are keeping warm or clearing the snow from the drive next door if your neighbour can’t manage, a small act can make a big difference to someone else.” When checking on the vulnerable, residents should ensure they are warm, especially at night, and have food and medicines so they don’t need to leave the house. Do you know someone who has recently been discharged from hospital that would benefit from some extra support at home or in the community? The Pioneering Care Part-nership (PCP) has launched a new county-wide Health Buddy service in conjunc-tion with County Durham NHS and the Health and Social Care Volunteering Fund. The Health Buddy service offers short-term care and support to individuals

who have recently been discharged from hospital. The aim is to assist recovery and build confidence in returning to their home.Margaret Curtis, Programme Manager for the Health Buddy service, says, “After leaving hospital, people can find that they struggle with day-to-day activities and they may feel isolated because they are worried about getting out and about on their own. This scheme can offer a helping hand and a friendly face to support

St. John’s Church will be holding a Coffee Morning on Saturday 26th January, from 10am to 11.30am.

Coffee morningThere will be the usual cakes and pastry stall and also a stall selling knitted items.

One way to look at the snow is to consider the misery of the morning and evening com-mute, but when these youngsters, pictured outside the offices of The Crier, were told that school was closed at the beginning of the week, they took an altogether more positive view of the thick covering across our parks. Instead of sitting at home on their Playsta-tions, they celebrated by spending the day sledging down the snow-covered slopes, as well as giving us the photo for the front of next year’s Christmas card! While below, the coal drops at Locomotion were pretty as a picture! (Picture courtesy of Lydia Jackson),Shildon Railway & Institute

LettersHave your say...

Dear Editor,

In response to the letter regarding West Road Allotments, I am very satisfied that the person responsible for lighting his fire on a daily basis has been told to stop. This fire was lit twice a day ALL year round, NOT just starting in November as stated.

This was not just detrimental to our health but it now means we can open our windows and hang our washing out. No smoke is to any complainant’s liking. I suffer from asthma and having smoke in your house from this allotment is not only upsetting, but annoying, as this person lights his fire then goes home to another part of town. Everyone else seems to grow seeds without lighting fires.

Name and address withheld on request.

Dear Editor,

As a long-time resident of Vaughan Street in Shildon I feel that someone must respond to the writer of the 'Have Your Say' letter in the 18 January issue. For many years the residents here have been subject to clouds of thick, strong-smelling smoke emitting from the solid fuel boiler which the writer states that he used to use. This hung around in the street due to the cold weather and often blew directly onto the sheltered housing flats in which elderly people live, some of whom may well have health problems.

The writer must have been aware of that but, as we are all quite sure that he does not live in this street, he obviously was not bothered about the effect it had on the people who do live there. So, to the person who complained and resolved this matter I say, well done. We are all now satisfied that we don't have to put up with this any longer.

Name and address withheld on request.

Police are reminding drivers that before you set off in this weather, you must be able to see clearly. A spokesperson advised, “Clear all snow and ice from all your windows and remove all snow that might fall off into the path of other road users. “Additionally take the extra time to clear all snow from

the top of your vehicle too, sudden braking can catapult snow forward completely covering your windscreen, putting you in danger from lack of visibility. Not only this, but road users behind can end up covered in the snow from your vehicle too as you’re driving! Please drive safely and consider-ately.”

On Thursday 17th January, Kieran Gittins, age 20 years of Lichfield Road, West Cornforth was charged with handling two stolen vehicle batteries from

the Hackworth Industrial Estate on 15th January.Gittins will appear before Newton Aycliffe Mag-istrates’ Court on 1st February.

Railway Institute: before and after

Above and below are two fascinating photographs of the Shildon Railway Institute site, both before and after the Institute was built. Above is a postcard, kindly brought in by Vince Horan, with a photograph of All Saints Church, dated 1904. The photograph ap-pears to be taken from almost the same spot as the photograph below, which shows the Railway Institute in 1913, the year it opened. If you look closely at the top photograph, it appears that there is some scaffolding on a structure at the left of the picture, behind the large tree that identifies the spot both photos have been taken. Does the scaffolding signify a building being erected? Or is it perhaps a structure that existed before the Institute was built? Do any of our readers know the story of the area prior to the building of the Institute, or perhaps even the story of exactly what can be seen in the picture? If you do, please get in touch with us here at the Crier and let us know. The Railway In-stitute is celebrating its centenary next month on 8th February with a Centenary Night.

In the new year Durham Tigers Rugby League will be renewing its ties with Super League’s Bradford Bulls. On 22nd & 23rd February, the Tigers will be hosting a two day coaching course, by Bradford Bull’s coaches, at Shildon’s Sunnydale Leisure Centre for their players. Tickets will cost £10 a day and offer players the chance to be coached by some of this country’s leading coaches. This will be the third time that the Tigers have hosted Bradford Bulls coaches at Sunnydale. Club Secretary, Phil Selby said, “Following two highly successful previous courses we are honoured that the Bulls have agreed to this because we are determined to give local

kids the best training and opportunities possible, so that if they are interested in pursuing Rugby further, then they can. “The Bulls are always looking for new players that have the potential to play professionally, and we give them the opportunity to look for talent outside of the Yorkshire area.”The Durham Tigers has been based at Sunnydale Leisure Centre in Shildon since 2010, and they aim to use rugby to provide a hobby for local people of all ages and to help the

community by giving young people a focus. They hold weekly training sessions for people of all ages and are always keen to recruit new players: On Tuesday evenings they provide training for: their open age (16+) team between 6:30 and 8pm and their Under 14’s team between 6 and 7:30pm.Also, on Saturdays, between 10 and 11.30am they provide training for their 2 junior teams: The under 9’s and 11’s and the under 13’s. “If anyone wishes to join any of these sessions the club welcome you to come along,” said a spokesperson. For more information about the team, or if you are curious about in the Bradford Bulls, you can like “We are Durham Tigers” on Facebook.

Another week, another fixtures headache: Shildon AFC’s season remains on hold as the winter weather puts paid to yet another round of matches. The FA Vase away tie against Bitton AFC of Bristol was postponed last Friday and has been rearranged for this Saturday, 26th.Meanwhile, another league tie was added to the pile when the Railwaymen’s match against Darlington 1883 on Wednesday night was also called off. There are no prizes for guessing the reason. Meanwhile, while the club’s

players continue to train in the hope of playing a game - they have played just two matches so far this year - the next round of the FA Vase has been drawn, and Shildon will face a tough test should they progress in Bristol. The club has been drawn to play the winner of Brantham Athletic v Whitley Bay, and with both Northern League clubs favourites to win their Fourth Round ties, it looks like Shildon could be up against the three-time Vase winners in a repeat of the 2010 Quarter-final, which

Shildon lost after having a player sent off while leading 1-0. Whitley Bay went on to lift the trophy in the final at Wembley. The full draw for ties involving Northern League sides is: Bodmin Town or Ashington v Gornal Athletic or Wisbech Town; Brantham Athletic or Whitley Bay v Bitton or Shildon; Larkhall Athletic or Peacehaven & Telscombe v Tunbridge Wells or Dunston UTS and Spennymoor Town or Lordswood v Bemerton Heath Harlequins or Blackfield & Langley. Ties are due to be played on Saturday 9th February.
