After a deadly fourth wave of coronavirus,

Pakistan reported a positivity ratio below 4%

for the second consecutive day on Monday.

According to the National Command and

Operation Centre's (NCOC) data, about 1,757

new infections emerged during the last 24 hours

after 48,732 tests were taken, taking the total

caseload to 1,240,425 across the country.

New research published on Monday shows the

majority of Canadian children and teens were

spared the most severe health outcomes of

COVID-19 in the first phase of the pandemic. But

health experts worry the increased transmissibility

of the Delta variant could expose high numbers of

vulnerable young people to the virus and lead to

more serious cases.

COVID-19 UPDATES

PHF WEEKLY BULLETIN

The National Command and Operation Centre

(NCOC) has decided to lift additional restrictions

in five districts of Punjab and one of Khyber

Pakhtunkhwa after September 23. The decision

was made at the NCOC meeting headed by the

Federal Minister for Planning, Development, and

Special Initiatives Asad Umar, over the observance

of a decline in the transmission of the disease in

districts where the prevalence of disease was high.

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) on Friday

extended the coronavirus restrictions imposed

on inbound flights till October 31, which were

earlier stretched till September 30. In a

notification, the CAA said all Pakistanis, whose

return to Pakistan from Category C Countries is

scheduled till October 31, may travel to the

country without grant of a special exemption.

The local authorities on Friday have arrested two

people in Karachi’s Sohrab Goth for not

administering coronavirus vaccination. Earlier,

Sindh government had announced to arrest non-

vaccinated people after the National Command

and Operation Centre (NCOC) issued fresh

directives for expediting COVID vaccination in the

country.

Nine more died of Covid-19 and 187 new

patients were reported in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

as positivity level for the virus dropped below

five per cent in all high-risk districts, except

Peshawar where the infectivity rate was

recorded 5.1 per cent. The province has 5,175

active coronavirus patients, mostly in Peshawar,

Mardan, Swat, Kohat, Nowshera, Swabi, Chitral

Lower, Mansehra and Bannu.

As Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences

became the epicenter of the treatment of

coronavirus illness (COVID-19) during pandemic

after February 2020, the healthcare workers

and their families began to experience

potentially harmful levels of stress. PIMS played

a key role in efforts to provide the

psychological support, care and resources

needed.

Maternal health project saves mothers and infants in underprivileged areas of Pakistan

By International Medical Corps (IMC)

30-year-old Fahmida lives in Urmar Payan an

underprivileged rural village in District Peshawar

with few opportunities for advancement. For 26

years, maternal health services were not

available in this community, and women had to

travel almost 20 kilometers for childbirth,

antenatal and postnatal care. Although there is a

health center in the village Basic Health Unit

Urmar Payan its labor room was closed because

no local women doctors were available to

provide services there.

“When I found out I was pregnant again,

I was upset,” Fahmida said. “I already

had a child, and I was worried that this

time, I would not survive the delivery.”

Her last delivery was conducted at home by an

unskilled birth attendant, as a result of which

Fahmida suffered heavy bleeding and was so

critical that she almost died. She did not want to

want to go through the same traumatic

experience in her second pregnancy, but due to

financial constraints could not afford to go to a

hospital. Fahmida and her family are among the

disadvantaged in her community; her husband

being uneducated and unskilled.

Fahmida went to visit her friend in the

neighborhood to discuss her situation. When she

arrived, her friend was getting ready to go to an

awareness session on maternal health and asked

Fahmida to join her. To raise awareness about

mother and child related health issues, different

sessions are being organized in the community

with the help of International Medical Corps’ field

staff. Fahmida and her friend attended the

session and received information focusing on

reproductive health, including the importance of

antenatal care visits during pregnancy, delivering

in a health center and family planning services.

They also learned that International Medical

Corps was supporting the health center with a

woman doctor on-board and providing free of

cost services. This information greatly helped

Fahmida and the next day she visited the health

center with her friend. The female doctor not only

examined Fahmida but performed an ultrasound

as well. She also ordered a few laboratory tests

to ensure that Fahmida was not suffering from

any disease or infection.

After her appointment, Fahmida received her

antenatal registration card and scheduled a

checkup. Finally, when she went into labor she

went to the health center and gave birth to a

healthy baby boy. The labor room was functional

after 26 years, which was a sigh of relief for the

community.

problems or spending a single penny”

VACCINE HESITANCY IN PAKISTAN

Climate-Fragility Risk Brief

For the past 41 years, Afghanistan, with its rich

history, beautiful landscapes and ethnically

diverse population, has endured nearly constant

armed conflict, whether in the form of

revolution, occupation, extremism or insurgency.

This has taken a tremendous toll in human

terms, but it has also exerted a powerful brake on

the country’s development. Today, Afghanistan

lags far behind its South Asian neighbours, while

China’s per capita GDP is more than 18 times

greater than Afghanistan’s. please click here.
