A security system can’t halt or record criminal activity if its components fail at the crucial moment.

Obvious? Sure. But unreliability in physical surveillance systems has long plagued the industry.

IP-based systems represent a dramatic improvement over analog closed-circuit TV technology. But customers looking for IP solutions may find their options dominated by risky and expensive commodity servers and storage systems, untested components and clunky video management tools.

In some industries, those risks are simply unacceptable.

“For end users like airports, banking and governments, the performance of physical security systems needs to be as close to 100 percent as possible,” says Alex Doorduyn, Director of Product Management at Intransa Inc. “As a provider of simplified, bundled high-performance appliance solutions, Intransa needs a virtualization component we can rely on 100 percent.”

VMware technology, which has been tested and certified for use with Intransa’s award-winning Video and Data Management & Retention™ (VDMR™) solutions, provides that reliability. The recent addition of the VMware High Availability feature has allowed Intransa to offer an unprecedented level of availability, promising its integrators and end users the most reliable IP-based surveillance appliance systems on the market today.

“The VMware vSphere® virtualized solution leads the industry with proven and robust management capability,” Doorduyn says. Compared to other virtualized solutions, the Intransa-VMware bundle delivers video appliances that are quicker and easier to deploy and less expensive to operate. They seamlessly support video surveillance, life safety, multiple stream recording, access control, video analytics and physical security information management (PSIM) applications.

An Evolving Market

Physical security and video surveillance systems have come a long way since the days of analog closed-circuit TV systems.

“The physical security market is evolving to address the growing demand for high-performance IP and physical security technology,” Doorduyn says.“At the same time, the platforms are growing more complex and challenging for the average integrator to install and support.”

End users seeking IP-based solutions—governments, public safety facilities, utilities and resource companies, gaming and hospitality operations, health-care facilities, manufacturers, and retailers—often face a poor selection of options and an arduous, expensive deployment process.

Typically, they must select from commodity hardware not built for nonstop recording and playback but rather for email or word processing. They must install and configure that hardware. They then must convert it to support applications such as streaming video, video management, video analytics and access control. Finally, they must run tests to ensure that the sum is more than a number of expensive parts.

Such systems tend to take up excessive physical space and demand high energy, HVAC, tuning and maintenance expenditures. Administration requirements can be daunting for security departments familiar with analog DVR setup.

Yet despite all that effort and expense, these systems often fail when they’re most needed.

Enter the Intransa-VMware bundled appliance solution, which includes an easy-to-use interface called Video System Administrator (VSA) Console for security users. The patented Intransa VDMR technology also smooths video recording for long-term retention and efficient playback (a feature called Video Stream Optimization) and seamless coordination of IP camera, IP storage, management and viewing networks (known as Video Stream Director).

By incorporating vSphere to create a dependable, risk-free deployment, Intransa’s VDMR technology eliminates complexity and server sprawl, improves reliability, and reduces customers’ HVAC requirements and energy consumption by up to 50 percent.

The marriage—Intransa is a member of the VMware Technology Application Partner (TAP) program—allows Intransa to advance a crucial business objective: delivering more technology options to physical security customers worldwide.

Why VMware?

When Intransa researched a virtualization provider that could ensure the highest reliability and availability, choosing VMware was an easy decision. Intransa had been repackaging VMware Player and VMware ESX® storage and failover solutions for several years, and had confidence in VMware’s superior technology and support.

In addition to storage solutions, “we also saw a need at the server level,” says Dr. Manqing Liu, Senior Director, Interoperability and Performance Science at Intransa. The OEM had considered Citrix’s XenServer freeware, but ruled it out because it was not a commercial-grade solution.

“We wanted to offer true HA failover in our product portfolio, and we saw vSphere as the best option,” he adds. “Adding another level of VMware technology has given us the advantage of providing end users with platforms boasting higher availability than anything on the market, while our appliance model simplifies the installation and operation of the complete solution.”

The vSphere HA feature provides uniform, cost-effective failover protection against hardware and operating system failures. It monitors virtual machines to detect failures, restarts virtual machines on other physical servers without manual intervention, and protects applications by automatically restarting virtual machines.

On the virtualization side, the Intransa-VMware ESXi™ solution enables two to five preconfigured virtual machines on a single physical server appliance. Those machines run Intransa’s VSA Console software as the interface with certified physical security applications such as video management software from Intransa SELECT ELITE partners such as AMAG, Genetec, Lenel, Milestone Systems, On-Net Surveillance Systems Inc. (OnSSI) and Pelco.

To ease deployment by an integrator or end user, Intransa preinstalls ESXi, one Windows OS per virtual machine, and provides a self-loading USB media kit with the customer’s choice of preloaded security application.

“VMware is a best-in-class provider. They provide robust, reliable virtualization and energy efficiency.”

Benefits to End Users

Customers who deploy Intransa-VMware bundled solutions enjoy the following benefits:

Simplified installation and operation – With the Intransa appliance model, VMware ESXi is preconfigured and optimized for the specific, demanding needs of physical security applications such as video surveillance, access control, PSIM and video analytics. The complexity facing the integrator, from equipment selection to installation and tuning, is completely eliminated. And the VSA Console provides an easy-to-use interface for security users to keep the system running at its peak, without requiring extensive IT skills.

Energy savings – Reductions in ongoing energy consumption have been estimated at 40 to 50 percent, Doorduyn and Liu say, thanks to compact appliance footprints and extensive design effort. And for even more results, Intransa’s VDMR technology includes VSA Energy Manager, with disk spin-down support, for use in long-term video archiving with near-instant playback. VSA Energy Manager reduces energy consumption by up to 70 percent while eliminating the time, expense and risk of human error involved in offline storage on CDs, DVDs or tape.

“In today’s security environment, where users are more aware than ever of energy costs, end users are becoming more driven by energy efficiency,” Doorduyn says. “They’re starting to pay significantly more attention to the system’s total cost of ownership (TCO), just as IT has been doing for decades. With the combined VMware-Intransa solution, those who compare systems are finding our appliances are significantly less costly to run.”

He also notes that architecture and engineering consultants are finding that Intransa solutions mesh well with Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) accreditation requirements from the U.S. Green Building Council (Intransa is a member), easing concerns of the building and construction industry.

Choice of application – Intransa Technology Labs have certified hundreds of applications and products for use on appliance platforms for risk-free deployments. The most popular applications are available on self-loading USB media kits, ready for activation and use, with each appliance based upon the customer’s requirements.

Painless deployments – An Intransa appliance sets itself up automatically, and is selected by preconfigured model according to specific project requirements. Multiple appliances can be managed as a single device, each offering known performance and capabilities.

Reliability and support – Customers receive an appliance platform with known configuration parameters and performance envelope. That simplifies both local and remote support, and customers are backed up by a comprehensive hardware warranty on the appliance hardware.

Server consolidation – By consolidating servers 3:1 with compact, energy-efficient appliances, end users further reduce floor space and HVAC requirements and dramatically slash energy consumption and maintenance expenditures proportionately. Of course, hardware cost also plummets as a result of this consolidation effort.

“Adding another level of VMware technology has given us the advantage of providing end users with platforms boasting higher availability than anything on the market.”
