convergent sept artères dont Eastham Street, adresse choisie par Brooks England pour installer son magasin-matricule, B1866, premier du genre. Pavé humide, réverbère à la Dickens, façade en briques brunes, devanture bleu nuit à volets plein : on est bien à Londres.

The ciTyLondon. The West End and its theaters, and even more precisely, Covent Garden, a multiethnic and socially diverse district. It is here, between Saint-Martin’s Lane to the south and Holborn to the north, that you find Seven Dials, a junction/neighborhood named after the seven main arteries which converge here, including Eastham Street, the location selected by Brooks England to establish its registered shop, B1866, first of its kind. Damp pavement, Dickensian street lamps, brown brick façade, dark blue shop front with old-fashioned shutters: this is definitely London.

Squelette ou plein cuir coloré, multi-exposée, la fameuse selle B17, best-seller mondial et souverain, est traitée ici comme un trophée, entre bibliothèque cyclo-thématique, display muséal et atelier de commandes des bespoke-bicycles. Foyer d’aficionados venus ici partager leur passion, diffusant l’intégralité des gammes de produits Brooks – près de 150 références en magasin – B1866 organise un feu roulant de signatures de livres, expositions, évènements liés à la culture et à la mémoire du vélo, présentation de cycles customisés...

A spAce: A low, old house that has seen the likes of a myriad of businesses, this brick building has been home, since November 2013, to the first flagship store of one of the most famous and venerable cycling accessories houses in the world: Brooks England. Envisioned, decorated and designed by an ultra-active cell at the heart of this company, including artistic directors, graphic designers, designers, photographers and writers, this space, divided into two rooms with brick walls, holds antique workshop furniture, workbenches, lockers, tanned-leather Chesterfield sofas, and industrial lighting, decorative and atmospheric indicators of a display of authentic products organized by color range. Whether basic or covered in colorful leather, exhibited in a multitude of ways, the famous B17 bicycle saddle, a worldwide leading product and bestseller, is treated here as a trophy, in the midst of a cyclo-themed library, a museum-style display and a workshop for bespoke bicycle orders. A hotspot for aficionados who have come here to share their passion, selling the entire range of Brooks products –nearly 150 items in stock in the store– B1866 hosts a non-stop circuit of book signings, exhibits, events related to the culture and heritage of cycling, presentations of customized bicycles...

S elles et harnais : c’est par le cheval que John Boultbee Brooks entra dans la carrière à Birmingham en 1866. Cavalier, son cheval venant de décéder, il passa au vélo, alors doté d’une selle en bois. Inconfort et douleurs : sa première selle en

cuir, dûment patentée en 1882, fera autorité jusqu’à devenir la Rolls-Royce du genre. Référence et emblème absolus, la selle Brooks B17, désormais profilée en logo, est un bijou manufacturé sans un ïota changé, dans les ateliers du site de Smethwick dont les machines remontent aux années 1950. S’y est adjointe une vaste gamme de sac, sacoches, accessoires inscrits dans le droit fil piqué sellier d’un héritage et d’une tradition jalousement préservés, quand bien-même la firme évolue depuis 2002, dans le giron du groupe italien familial et spécialisé Selle Royal. Lequel s’évertue avec élégance à ne rien modifier de ce qui fit, fait et fera le prestige de Brooks : aucune délocalisation, aucune entorse à la production originale. Brooks est anglais et reste anglais. En attestent, entre autres, la publication de la gazette The Brooks Bugle, publiée à 150 000 exemplaires et celle du Book for Cyclist, bible annuelle que s’arrachent les clients.

A pORTRAiT: Saddles and harnesses: it was with horses that John Boultbee Brooks entered the working world in Birmingham in 1866. As a horseman who had just lost his mount, he decided to turn to the bicycle, equipped back then with a wooden seat. Discomfort and pain: his first leather saddle, duly patented in 1882, quickly became the equipment of note, the “Rolls Royce” of the category. An absolute reference and symbol, the Brooks B17 saddle, now seen as part of the B1866 logo, is a treasure that has not changed one iota, manufactured in their Smethswick workshops, where the machines date back to the 1950’s. Added to this, a wide range of bags, satchels and accessories which fit perfectly, like saddle-stitchings, into their heritage and carefully-preserved tradition, though, since 2002, the firm has been part of the specialized Italian family group Selle Royal. They strive ever so elegantly to maintain what created, creates and will continue to create the prestige of the Brooks name: no outsourcing, no changes to original production methods. Brooks is English, and will remain so. Proof of this is provided, amongst other things, by the publication of the Brooks Bugle gazette, which has a circulation of 150,000 readers, as well as that of the Book for Cyclists, the annual “bible” which is swiftly snapped up by clients.
