For example, the East Sussex coast, between Rye and Hastings, was much visited by the Pre- Raphaelites, including Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Ford Madox Brown. And John Everett Millais painted the masterpiece Blind Girl at Fairlight, near Pett Level. Turner painted there and Edward Burra lived in Rye. Their successor today is Michael B. White, a regular exhibitor at the National Portrait Gallery, who is selling Westcott House, his retreat overlooking the sea at Pett Level, for £550,000 through Phillips & Stubbs (01797 227338, phillipsandstubbs.co.uk). ‘Artists are attracted to this area because the light reflects so wonderfully from the sky onto the sea,’ says White, a self- confessed hedonist. ‘It’s an utterly unspoilt area and only 75 miles from London and the Chelsea Arts Club.’ White’s 1919-built Arts and Crafts house, which he shares with his wife, the writer Sarah Charles, has two bedrooms and two studios together with a writing room. It faces south- east and is surrounded by wild gardens. L ONDON has a haul of artists’ homes and several are on the market. Patrick Heron (1920-1999), one of the St Ives School in Cornwall, taught at the Central School of Arts and Crafts between 1953 and 1956 and lived in a huge house in Addison Avenue, Holland Park. Ruskin Spear (1911-1990), whose work is to be found in the Tate gallery, was best known for his portraits of figures such as Harold Wilson, Francis Bacon and Sid James. The mansion in which Spear had his studio — Willoughby House, Hammersmith, a six-bedroom property with five reception rooms — has just been sold for £3,350,000 with Marsh & Parsons (020 7368 4197, marshandparsons.co.uk). Owning a home that once belonged to a famous artist’s muse holds a similar fascination for buyers. Nicky Weymouth (now Samuel) was the hugely popular English beauty of the 1970s, known for her ‘fire engine red hair and enormous carnelian eyes’. She was also the subject of one of the most famous works by Andy Warhol. She met Warhol in New York at his notorious Factory — the hip hangout for artsy types and stars such as Mick and Bianca Jagger, Yves Saint Laurent and Tennessee Williams. She found Warhol an enigmatic figure. ‘He was fundamentally a very shy person who enjoyed watching other people interact,’ she told the Mail, speaking from her home in Wales. Warhol painted Nicky’s portrait from Polaroid snaps he took in her room at The Chelsea Hotel. In 1979, Nicky suddenly tired of the jet-set lifestyle and settled down in a Grade II-listed Tudor farmhouse, with a cottage she uses for holiday lets, near Llanfechain, Powys. It’s now for sale for £650,000 through Strutt & Parker (01743 284200, struttandparker.com). ‘The countryside on the England and Wales border is magical,’ she says. ‘There are very few tourists, so it is extremely quiet here.’ A ND it is there — a world away from Warhol’s Factory — that Nicky’s portrait looks down on her as a memory of her youth. Meanwhile in Spain, there’s an apartment on the market with con- nections to Pablo Picasso. It’s the 5th floor penthouse next to Ciuta- della Park in Barcelona Old Town. ‘Picasso lived there for eight months in 1904 at the end of his blue period, when he used prostitutes and beggars as his subjects,’ says Oscar Marrugat, the estate agent with Lucas Fox (0034 933 562 989, lucasfox.com), which is now selling the property, priced at €920,000 (£773,000). It is doubtful whether Picasso would recognise his old apartment today. When he rented it, the flat was a tangle of small rooms. Now modernised, it comprises a single, air conditioned open-plan living/ dining room and a bedroom, with terraces outside. But you can’t paper over the flat’s exotic history. Few things add more to a property’s mystique than a connection with a famous artist — or a group of artists. For example, the east Sussex

coast, between Rye and Hastings, was much visited by the Pre- Raphaelites, including Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Ford Madox Brown.
