For over three hundred years man dreamed of linking the Caribbean and the Pacific, but it was not until the beginning of the last century and the drive of President Theodore Roosevelt that the ‘Big Ditch’ was actually built. Today it stands as one of man’s greatest engineering feats and a marvel to behold.

Now we can transit the Canal as well as Gatun Lake nearby in one day, in the gracious comfort of Holland America’s ms Zuiderdam, a ship designed, and refurbished in 2010, to please even the most discriminating traveller.

In addition to the highlight of our trip, the Panama Canal, we will explore exciting ports of call in Bahamas, Aruba, Antilles, Panama and Costa Rica.

In 2006 Shelley Walton joined Craig Travel running the front desk, and became the first voice many travellers hear when they call. Prior to turning her passion for travel into her every day, Shelley spent 20 years managing her own business and working for the school board. Well-travelled, Shelley has lived in Europe as well as across Canada. She first discovered her love of cruising on Holland America Line while escorting Craig Travellers to Canada and New England. She is very excited to share this Caribbean cruise with you.

water 85 feet above sea level, the water runs downhill to fill the locks. No pumps, no power other than the force of gravity! Fact: It will take about 52 million gallons of water to float your Holland America ship through the locks.

Colón, Panama: Colón lies on the stunning Caribbean coast of Panama, where unparalleled beaches and lush tropical scenery are de rigueur. In nearby Portobello, you might want to discover the ruins of Spanish forts, watch the colourful yachts sailing in the bay or hunt for treasures in the local markets. Travelling to the Gatun Locks allows having a bird's eye view of the immense ships passing through the Panama Canal.

Puerto Limón, Costa Rica: If you desire searching iridescent blue morpho butterflies, sloths, turtle nesting grounds and wise old shamans, well this is the place! But if you are more into local food, then you might want to explore the capital city of San Jose, where museums beckon and markets burst with luscious local tastes such as mangoes, bananas, pineapples or papayas.
