THE ITALIAN CLUSTERSItalian clusters are unique territorial entities characterized by the active presence
of both a community of people and a population of firms in one naturally and
historically bounded area. In the district, unlike in other environments, such as
the manufacturing towns, community and firms tend to merge.
The clusters in figures
•156 industrial districts in 17 regions
• 50% in the North, 30% in the Centre and 20% in the South
• 25% employees in Italy across all sectors of production
• 39.3% employees in Italy in the manufacturing sector.
Italian clusters are focused on fashion (textile, gold), home (furniture, tiles),
mechanics, leather and food.
Along with these clusters in traditional Made in Italy sectors many technological
districts have developed specializing in medicine, biomedical technology,
instrumental and precision engineering, robotics, micro-electronics, ICT,
aerospace, new materials and nanotechnology.
