B. Course Description

The course covers fundamental aspects of existing legislation and policies regarding

occupational health and safety, compensation, and distribution of responsibilities.

C. Course Objectives

Content

Upon completing this course, the student will

1. Determine the historical stages related to occupational health and safety issues.

2. Interpret the legal standards contained in the federal regulations of both

Occupational Health and Safety and Environmental Protection.

3. Justify the legal aspects related to compensation in the event of accidents at work.

4. Explain how the human factor impacts organizations on safety and health

5. Evaluate the tasks and components of organizational health and safety

management.

6. Estimate the cost of losses caused by accidents in the work environment for both

the employee and the organization.

7. Analyze how occupational health and safety can impact organizations.


Language

1. Demonstrate understanding by paying special attention to the class and

instructions offered by the facilitator and to the experiences shared by classmates.

2. Synthetize information by using professional language in oral discussions while

collaborating in group assignments and oral presentations, all while correctly

employing the correct terminology.

3. Analyze the topics assigned, comparing various resources and references to hold

the information to the highest academic level.

4. Prepare all assignments adhering to state law and regulations related to Safety

and Health in the workplace, using professional legal language and observing the

writing grammar rules of the language used.

D. Specific Course Guidelines

The student will follow these specific course guidelines:

1. Refer to the Student Guide to glance at general policies, resources, and other

essential elements. This guide can be accessed in the Supporting Documents

section in Blackboard.

2. Hand in all assignments through Blackboard. Assignments that are not submitted

in Blackboard will receive a score of zero.

3. Use professional language while preparing all assignments and oral presentations

in the language that corresponds to each workshop.

5. Always adhere to existing legislation and policies regarding occupational health

and safety in the state or jurisdiction in which you are presently taking this course.

Each activity that forms part of the evaluation includes two components with distinctive

weights:

The sum of the components, per activity, will be multiplied by the corresponding weight

Round Robin

It consists of a round of consecutive questions guided by the facilitator to assess the students’ comprehension of OSHA, Risk Management, and The Human Being in the Workplace discussed during workshops three and four. The evaluation of this activity will consist of 70% content and 30% language. 30% of language will be evaluated using the rubrics indicated in detail in the workshops, and 70% of the content will be evaluated by assessment instruments developed by the facilitator or otherwise stipulated.

The facilitator will specify in the workshops the exclusive works that will be included in the digital portfolio. C. Actividades que realizará antes del taller

1. Estudie cuidadosamente los objetivos de contenido del taller y anote sus dudas para

que el facilitador pueda aclararlas durante la clase.

2. Utilice la Biblioteca Virtual para que investigue, estudie y defina los conceptos

detallados en la sección de Vocabulario. Debe someter sus definiciones a través de la

plataforma de Blackboard utilizando el enlace correspondiente e incluir su tarea en el

3. Previo al primer taller presencial, cada estudiante entrará a Blackboard a la sección de

Foros y localizará el foro de presentación. El estudiante proveerá la siguiente

c. Su presentación deberá contener tres oraciones.

Al finalizar su lectura, redacte un ensayo de 700 palabras en el que analice

críticamente el efecto de la carga laboral y sus repercusiones en la calidad de vida


laboral y personal. Envíe su ensayo vía Blackboard; utilice el enlace que corresponda

e incluya su tarea en el Portafolio Digital.

a. Acceda el Foro de discusión escrita y reaccione al artículo de referencia. Luego,

reaccione a los comentarios de al menos dos compañeros.

b. Imprima una copia de sus reacciones y llévela al taller para que discuta dicho

material.

D. Actividades de aplicación durante el taller

1. El facilitador proveerá a los estudiantes su información de contacto, se seleccionará el

representante estudiantil y se discutirá sus responsabilidades.

2. El facilitador explicará detenidamente los objetivos de contenido y lenguaje del curso, y

los recursos disponibles en Blackboard. Además, aclarará el propósito del portafolio

digital y aprovechará la ocasión para especificar las actividades que realizará del taller


y las de aplicación (durante), así como los recordatorios semanales sobre las fechas

de entrega. Finalmente, discutirá los criterios de evaluación del curso y las rúbricas de

evaluación que se utilizarán para evaluar el dominio del contenido y desarrollo

lingüístico a lo largo del curso; las mismas se encuentran en la sección Supporting

Documents en Blackboard.

3. El facilitador realizará su presentación y plenaria con los estudiantes de los temas del

taller.

4. Discusión de la tarea del diagrama de Venn.

a. En plenaria, el facilitador proveerá espacio para que los estudiantes presenten sus

trabajos y reaccionen a los mismos.

b. Para participar en la actividad tienen que presentar copia de la tarea realizada.

5. El facilitador formará grupos de trabajo dependiendo de la cantidad de estudiantes.

6. Se desarrollará la primera actividad grupal presencial. A los estudiantes se le

asignarán temas relacionados a la búsqueda de información del primer taller. Las

actividades se distribuyen de la siguiente manera:

a. Grupo 1 - Sintetizará el desarrollo histórico de la seguridad y salud ocupacional.

b. Grupo 2 - Discutirá la aportación de la Organización Mundial de la Salud en la

definición del término salud, creación de entornos saludables y calidad de vida en

las naciones.

c. Grupo 3 - Analizará el rol de las organizaciones de trabajadores o laborales en el

desarrollo de entornos saludables y de seguridad ocupacional.

d. Grupo 4 - Valorará el rendimiento de la inversión en la salud y seguridad

ocupacional.

Al finalizar las actividades grupales en cada taller, el equipo escogerá un estudiante

que exponga el propósito e importancia de la tarea desarrollada por su grupo de

trabajo. El presentador de la tarea deberá rotarse semanalmente para dar igual de

participación a cada uno de los estudiantes en cada taller. Una vez concluya el taller,

cada subgrupo someterá un resumen de la actividad vía Blackboard, en el enlace que

corresponde a las actividades grupales del taller 1. Cuando el facilitador corrija la

tarea, cada estudiante guardará la misma, junto a su rúbrica, en el Portafolio Digital.

Esta actividad se evaluará con la Rúbrica de comunicación oral.


7. El facilitador podrá compartir documentación electrónica necesaria utilizando la

herramienta de Blackboard (botón Recursos adicionales).

8. El facilitador aclarará las dudas relacionadas con las tareas a completar antes del

próximo taller. Es importante que se verifiquen siempre las tareas y actividades

sugeridas para el próximo taller para que se hagan los arreglos necesarios.

9. El facilitador repasará los temas a discutirse del próximo taller.

10. El alumno preparará su autorreflexión sobre el tema que proponga el facilitador.

a. Si el tiempo apremia, el facilitador solicitará al estudiante que envíe su documento

vía Blackboard al facilitador, antes de que comience a realizar las actividades

previas al próximo taller (Workshop Two). Esta actividad se evaluará con la

Rúbrica de autorreflexión.

11. Toda tarea, evidencia de avalúo u otros documentos trabajados en el curso, deberán

C. Activities to be completed before the Workshop

1. Visit the Virtual Library to research, study and define the course vocabulary as

stated above. Create a table with the concepts, the definition and the academic

source (or sources) from which the definition was taken. Once completed, send

the table to the facilitator through the section assignment in Blackboard,

assignment workshop 2. Print a copy and bring it to class.

2. See the video: Why OSHA was created? When you complete the video, you will

write an essay of 500 words related to the pertinence and transcendence of

OSHA's creation.

a. Take into consideration the contribution of OSHA’s creation to future

generations in the labor market.

b. Once completed, send your task to the facilitator through the section

assignment in Blackboard.

c. Print a copy and bring it to class. The facilitator will evaluate this activity

using the Essay Rubric.

3. Create a two-column chart illustrating your findings on OSHA’s Mission and

Purpose. The first column presents the mission and the second will indicate the

strategy to reach the goal or purpose in the workplace.

a. Once you complete the exercise, upload a copy of your table in the

assignment section Mission and Purpose, Workshop Two and send it to

the facilitator.


4. Once you complete the exercise, go to the discussion forum in Blackboard, using

the Discussion Board tool. In this forum, answer and elaborate on the following

questions:

a. Who is responsible for this purpose: employers, employees, federal

government or to the states?

b. What strategies should be adopted to fulfill the purposes?

c. Make sure to include the references and scholarly sources you used to form

your contribution.

d. React to the comments of at least three other students. This activity will be

evaluated using the Written Discussion Forum Rubric.

Be prepared for a collaborative activity in class.

5. The facilitator will create an oral discussion forum using the VoiceThread tool in

Blackboard. In this forum, the students will explain and interpret the concept of the

Right to Know. You may take special attention to the content of the concept and

highlight the ideas you learn from the contributions of your colleagues.

a. React to the comments of at least three other students.

b. This activity will be evaluated using the Oral Discussion Forum Rubric.

6. Continue working your Digital Portfolio following the instructions established in the

Digital Performance Portfolio Assessment Handbook found in Blackboard.

7. Go to Rosetta Stone Advantage and continue working on the interactive exercises

designed to develop/improve your linguistic skills in English.

D. Application Activities during the Workshop

1. The facilitator will present the assessment results of Workshop One, and will also

clarify any doubts from the last workshop.

2. The facilitator presents and explains the objectives of Workshop Two.

3. At the end of the facilitator's presentation, the class will work in groups to carry out

the following activities:

a. Group 1: Throughout history, workers have been exposed to an infinite number

of risks associated with the tasks they perform. The task of group 1 is to explain

what was necessary to incorporate in the workplace to make it a safety place

when the security act (OSH Act) was created. What is the agency responsible


for making recommendations and research to improve the working

environment? Who offers OSHA support?

b. Group 2: When does the contractual relationship between workers and

employers arise? What is the responsibility and rights of the employee and

employer?

c. Group 3: The group will prepare a list of the organizations and agencies in the

national market that are complementary to OSHA. These agencies are

distinguished as they provide training, reliable information, important data

related to occupational safety and health. Students will classify organizations if

they are: certification boards, professional societies and standard and testing

organizations.

d. Group 4: The training and safety protective equipment are grouped by type of

industry and services provided. Students will select three industries from the

national market and develop an explanatory table with the following columns:

Type of industry, training and safety equipment required. At least two examples

of training and safety equipment must be included.

4. All groups will prepare a summary of the activity and submit in the assignments

section, groups activities Workshop Two, to the facilitator by Blackboard. The

facilitator will review the activity and submit his/her comments to the students.

5. The facilitator will review the topics to be discussed in the next workshop.

6. The facilitator will provide a few minutes for the students to write a self-reflection

on the topic determined by the facilitator. This activity will be evaluated using the

Self-reflection Rubric.

7. All assignments, Assessment evidence or other documents worked on in the

course must be presented in the portfolio, after having been corrected by the

facilitator.

i. Indicarán la industria en donde ocurren, las medidas adoptadas para

reducir su incidencia y los resultados observados.

donde un patrono tiene como meta que su empresa sea exitosa, y a la

misma vez aumentar la retención de sus trabajadores. La empresa ha

tenido varios incidentes relacionados a seguridad y salud entre sus

empleados, lo que ha incrementado las renuncias de trabajadores valiosos

en el último año. Como primer paso, el patrono decide realizar una

evaluación del mercado para tener el perfil de beneficios que ofrecen

industrias similares en su localidad. Luego de su evaluación, y sin tomar en

consideración otros aspectos de la empresa, el patrono decide reestructurar


la escala salarial. El grupo de trabajo deberá evaluar si los empleados solo

buscan sueldos competitivos o si existen otras áreas a explorar que no

necesariamente se encuentran relacionadas al sueldo. ¿Qué estrategias

debería explorar el patrono para realzar la imagen de la empresa entre sus

empleados, y que se apartan de los medios tradicionales a tono con las

1. Visit the Virtual Library to research, study and define the course vocabulary as

stated above. Create a table with the concepts, the definition and the academic

source (or sources) from which the definition was taken. Once completed, send

the table to the facilitator through Blackboard. Print a copy and bring it to class.

2. Obtain a copy of OSHA’s Form 301 (Injury and Illness Incident Report). The

facilitator will create a written discussion forum using the Discussion Board tool in

Blackboard. In this forum, the students will evaluate and detail each of its

components.

a. What mechanisms should we use to safeguard the information included

in the document? When should the form be used?

b. Differentiate an incident from an accident report.

c. React to the comments of at least three other students.

d. This activity will be evaluated using the Written Discussion Forum

3. Prepare a flowchart assessing accidents within your work environment. The idea is

to have a standard guide that consolidates the information related to the event in

detail.

a. It must cover who to contact in your workplace, how to notify the event,

department or section where the accident occurs, the originating source

of the accident, if there was correct use of personal protective

equipment, handling of healthy and injured workers, response time, use

of emergency codes if necessary, evidence, documentation, referral to

medical services, follow-up and closure of the emergency.

b. Emphasize the use of protective equipment and compliance with safety

measures to avoid possible future damage.

c. The flow chart must be delivered in Blackboard in the assignments

section of the task designated as Flow Chart for the handling of the

Accident.

4. Develop a guide to be used during the process of interviewing the witnesses of an

event and the documentation required.


a. The guide must contemplate certain key words or guides among them:

who, what, when, where, why and how.

b. The guide must be delivered in Blackboard in the assignments section

designated as Guide to be used when interviewing witness.

c. This activity will be evaluated using the Paragraph Construction Rubric.

5. Conduct a literature research using professional sources to detail the incidence of

accidents in the labor market.

a. Then, write an essay of 500 words indicating what have been the basic

prevention mechanisms or modifications adopted to prevent accidents

and results observed if they have been successful or not.

i. Submit the assignment through Blackboard in the assignments

section, in the area titled: Incidence and Prevalence of Accidents.

6. Continue working on your Digital Portfolio following the instructions established in

the Digital Performance Portfolio Assessment Handbook found in Blackboard.




1. The facilitator will present the assessment results of Workshop Three, and will

also explain the concepts where there were doubts.

2. At the end of the facilitator's presentation, the work groups will carry out the

following tasks in the class and present their findings:

a. Group 1: The members will present to the class the consensus they reached

regarding the importance of OSHA’s Form 301 (Injury and Illness Incident

Report). The group will evaluate and detail each of its parts. What mechanisms

should we use to safeguard the information included in the document? How

does the HIPAA Act protect the employee's medical documentation in the

event of an accident? The group will differentiate between what is an incident

and accident report.

b. Group 2: Members will reflect on why some accidents are not reported. The

group will discuss the lack of documentation in legal cases, costs related to

accidents and their impact on organizations. They must explain the matter in


detail and establish the steps that should be adopted in the investigation of

accidents. Establish the errors that should be prevented in the investigation of

accidents. Explain the importance of maintaining total control over the

incidence and prevalence of occupational accidents.

c. Group 3: The group will prepare a list of the most frequent accidents in their

general industry and basic prevention mechanism. Every member of the group

will present an example of possible areas of risk in their workplace and the

strategy adopted to prevent accidents.

d. Group 4: Members will highlight how employee discipline and accident

reporting contribute to creating a safe work environment. They should analyze

and reflect on the mistakes that should not be made in the accident

investigation.

3. After finishing the group activities, the class will be divided in two groups for a

“Round Robin” activity. Students will put away all their class materials.

a. Both groups will participate in a “Round Robin” on the topics discussed in

Workshop Three (Taller Tres) and Workshop Four. The facilitator may award a

bonus to the winning team.

Round Robin Rules:

i. Each group will have a turn to answer a question.

ii. The question will be given to one group member, who must try to answer

the question by him/herself. If the question is answered correctly by this

group member, the group will be awarded two points.

iii. If the student to whom the question is given does not know the answer,

he/she may consult the rest of the group. If the group answers correctly,

they will be awarded one point.

a. If neither the student nor the group answer the question correctly, the

facilitator will ask the question to the class to see if anyone knows the

answer. The facilitator will give the final answer. No points will be

awarded.

b. The next group will have its turn. During each turn, the question will be

given to a different student. All students should participate.


c. There should be at least five (5) questions per group or more, depending on

the class size and time for this activity.

4. This activity will be evaluated using the Oral Communication Rubric.

5. Before finalizing the workshop, the facilitator will review the topics to be

discussed in the next workshop and the student must complete and submit the

Assessment / Assessment document.

6. The facilitator will provide a few minutes for the students to write a self-

reflection on the topic determined by the facilitator. This activity will be

assessed using the Self-reflection Rubric.

7. All assignments, Assessment evidence or other documents worked on in the

course must be placed in the portfolio, after having been corrected by the

Facilitator.
